Tips on how to use this product - first, to see more than just a "pinpoint" of light, fold over the plastic cup around the eyepiece. This allows the viewer to get his/her eye closer to the surface of the eyepiece.

Then, start on the lowest magnification (the shortest objective), and get the slide in focus. If the light coming through is not white (instead it's red or blue), that is because the filter wheel on the stage is not in the correct position. Rotate the filter wheel until the light coming through is white.

The prepared slides are probably relatively dirty - the best thing is to prepare a slide with a very thin section of vegetable or fruit, such as the skin of a tomato. If you can not see light through the specimen when just holding it up to the light, it will not be translucent enough for the scope. A very thin slice of potato works well also. Place the piece on a slide and cover it with the circular "statical covers."

After the specimen is in focus with the lowest magnification, switch to the next highest (medium length objective) and refocus. This scope does relatively well at high magnification. The thinner the specimen, the better the "sharpness" or resolution of the object.

For the price, this product is sufficient for beginners, as long as the child has help with it. It will take them a little time to get used to looking through the eyepiece with one eye, but if you start with something simple and easy to focus on, it helps. To get better resolution (sharper images), you would have to pay hundreds of dollars more.

Unfortunately, like many of the Edu Science products I've encountered, this product amounts to little more than punishment for parents who actually care what their children play with and how they spend their time. I was wary of this product and wisely tested it myself before giving my 5-year-old scientist a chance to be disappointed. Verdict: cheap, flimsy, impossible to fully focus, insufficient light power to view even some of the provided slides - a total bummer.

Save yourself the time, money and frustration and just go ahead and buy your kids some more darn video games. The only lesson they will learn from this product: "You don't always get what you pay for - sometimes you get less."

Comments about Toys 'R' Us Edu Science Microscope 600X:

I bought this for my sons 6th birthday and he loves it. He looks at all kinds of stuff with it. My son has aspergers and loves science stuff so this holds his interest for quite awhile. It does have small parts and may not be appropriate for all kids but I think that's a judgement call for the parent. My son is really responsible with his things and so I don't worry about the small parts. It has different color lights so you can see various details in different light. It is easy to focus. I like that it holds 2 slides so you can compare things if you want. Tha case is nice to keep all the parts together nice and neat. This is great for any child who likes science.

This is a total waste of money!! Save yourself, your frustration and your kids lack of enthusiasm - buy something of value. A plastic everythign, slides included (which scratch at a hard look), a body that moves and 2 of 3 scopes that do NOT work (the only thing you can see is the spots on the lens - even when there isn't anything on the stage!). U-S-E-L-E-E-S-S. Total waste of money.

This EduScience microscope is the biggest piece of junk. Toys "R" Us should be ASHAMED to carry it. Thank goodness we got a gift receipt with this- we'll be returning it ASAP. And any of the reviews that say it's good must be written by EduScience employees who are paid to lie. Awful awful awful product. I wish I could give it ZERO stars.

Comments about Toys 'R' Us Edu Science Microscope 600X:

Save yourself the trip to return this by not buying it. It works okay at 150X, though it is unusable at higher magnifications. It is too unstable and the optics too dirty to view well anything above 150x. The manufacturers should have made it 20X, 50X, and 100X, as your can see some really neat stuff at those magnifications and the instability of the product would not have mattered very much if at all.

If you think that this is bad then you don't know how to use a microscope. I saw perfectly fine with it because I actually know how to use a microscope. Just follow the directions that It comes it. A small kid isn't going to know how to use a microscope.

Purchased this for my 8 year old grandson's birthday. Absolutely worthless. It does NOT focus. It does not magnify. The optics are so dirty and flawed you have no idea what you are really looking at through the eyepiece. You would have much better luck looking at an item through a regular magnifying glass.
This item is made of plastic...even if it worked at a minimal level it wouldn't stand up for long. I am taking it back today and ordering a new microscope from another source.

I bought it as a Christmas present for my 8 year old son. It looked great in the case, but didn't work from the moment we took it out. It's absolutely rubbish and a complete waste of money. Unfortunately I also bought the telescope - which is also rubbish. I certainly won't be buying anything by this manufacturer ever again.
