Lego train track is pretty standard. There is not much to say about it other than if you get into Lego trains, you will need more of it. Generally, it snaps together easily and stays together pretty well. My complaint with this specific set is all of the flexible pieces. These pieces come in handy to make some final connections to maximize track space or if you have a complex track setup with switches. If you put too many of these together in a row, the track is wavy (looks silly for a train fan; kids think its funny however). You don't need all the flexible pieces this set provides. Two more regular straight pieces and a reduction in flexible pieces would be great. One other note: Some people have mentioned trains slow down on these flexible tracks. We have not noticed that. What we have noticed is that the trains are louder when the roll over these tracks compared to the normal straight and curve tracks.

I was out to buy myself some new tracks for my ever expanding railway, but instead of finding the well loved straight and curve track pack, I find this new pack. Upon closer inspection of the box, I wasnt too disappointed, as it looked to be a cheaper way to obtain a few flexi tracks without having to buy a huge pile of them. But that was before I realised they had stopped selling the original straight and curve pack. WHY? First off, I would much rather have 8 curves than 4 track pieces worth of flexi track. Flexi is useful sometimes, but no-one wants mountains of it. It looks ugly as anything when used in large amounts in conjunction with normal track, and now in order to get more straights you have to buy tons of flexi track. And now the pack is more expensive? and you get less? What? But--- before I go on to criticise any longer, I'd still like to thank the lego designers or employees who at least care about the "trains" department. Thanks for trying to do something anyway. Anyway lego, the thing is, there are a lot of afols into the trains, and we would like a tad more variety. Please? How about re-introducing the parrallel crossover? Or the cross-track? Why don't you just sell the tracks individually like the 9v system did? 16 straights in one box, 16 curves in another box, and 48 pieces of flexi in another box? Or at least sell this new pack in conjunction with the old straight and curve mixed pack? The problem here is that basic track (straights), of which many are needed, are being sold COMBINED with more specialised tracks (flexi). Flexi is useful sometimes, but in comparison we need more basic track, and every time we buy this expansion pack, we pay more, get less, and wind up with more flexi track than we need! (Also note that to buy more curves we now have no other option besides buying switches for a measly 4 curves, or purchasing a whole new train set...) SO- overall this pack isn't terribly bad, but the fact that lego stopped selling the crucial straight and curve pack is. Lego could fix the problem buy continuing to sell this in conjunction with the straight and curve expansion, or even go better by selling each type of track individually, and introducing some new track pieces like crossovers or cross tracks. Thanks in advance, lego. -Legotrainfanatic

lockable flex tracks

By 1963maniac

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO City Flexible Train Tracks (7499):

The straight tracks are simply great, no complaints for them. The flex tracks make my track layout sloppy. The flex tracks could be much improved by having a locking mechanism. In that way they would be able to be locked into positions of straight, curve to the right or curve to the left. The track layout would be much more stable for the trains to travel over them. I stabilize my flex tracks now by using 2X4, 2X8, 2X12, or 2X16 plates. This works great for stabilizing the flex tracks as straight track. But my biggest problem is how to stabilize the flex track for curves!

    Dont like those Flexible tracks

    By ChyCha

    from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO City Flexible Train Tracks (7499):

I never had a Lego RC train before I got the 7939 Cargo train as a gift a few years ago. Naturally I wanted to expand my track, but this was after they discontinued 7896 (straights & curves pack). I found myself looking at the Lego shelves and all i could see was this flex and straight pack, and no curves. The only option for curves was to buy another trainset or lots of 7895 (Switching tracks) which also includes 4 curves. I understand that Flex is supposed to be a multipurpose-track, where you can use it as a curve or straight as you see fit. The idea is great, but products that try to be two things, usually dont do very good in either, which is the case here. The flex track moves every time a train goes over it. The longer the stretch of flex tracks the more it moves. My Emerald Night struggles with it and the track sticks out from the rest. I do, however, see a usage for the Flex, where you take 1-2 pieces together with straights to make a big curve. My 7939 Cargo train came with 16 flex, and that is basically all you will ever need. To include 16 Flex every time you want some straights, is to me a bad combo. Please bring back the assortment from the good old 9V era where you could buy boxes of 8 pieces of curves or straights and the 4519 (crossing). Please also bring back the 7996(double crossover). I can not recommend this pack for its price because of the flex track. The straights are as always superb.

This item is as described. Since Lego sets come with minimal straight track this is the only way to buy more straight pieces. The flex track i used to dislike, but now find it convenient for hooking up track sections that require non-standard lengths.
