I have been waiting to get a train since I started buying the first couple WV sets on the secondary market. That's years of alternately salivating and hyperventilating at the ever escalating price of 10173. Now I finally have a train in my village. My 6yo grandson actually built it over 2 evenings with very little help. I had to adjust the assembly and gears of the rotating Christmas tree and use big hands to secure the car platforms. Everything else was do-able for him and really, really exciting. This is our first Lego train and I'm impressed with how smooth the movement on the track is. Looking forward to adding the motor (but that will be a surprise Santa installs on Christmas Eve). We have added a passenger car that's a scaled down version from the 10173 train (instructions available on the Lego site; we did 3 windows per side instead of 5). We'll have lots of fun playing with this until the rest of the village comes out after Thanksgiving. And Lego forced me to say I bought the train for my grandson but, REALLY, the village is something the whole family enjoys seeing again each Christmas season. THANKS, Lego! I really, REALLY wanted a Christmas train!

I was excited when I heard they were coming out with a new train for Winter Village (WV). Long time coming. While the train has a nice WV feel to it, but the mediocre execution is nothing to get too excited about. The good news is that it has a lot of potential. I will be buying an additional set and some additional parts to round out the train with more cars and a redesigned steam engine and tender of an Emerald Night sizing, but retain the WV look. At least Lego did inspire the creative side of me to modify and expand it. I wish they had done away with the track and I would have preferred more cars or expanded set. I assume they probably have tons of curves to get rid of, but the radius is a bit small. Consider adding 4 strait track if you have other than a small tree or several WV sets to run around. Maybe they should have bumped up the price point some to add more cars. If you are creative, enjoy building and don't mind grabbing some additional parts, there is a lot to work with here to customize it and make it your own. Oooo... Hey Lego, maybe expand the train next year with additional cars? If not, cough... WV train station... cough. Notes: Had Lego dropped the track and expanded the train some, I would have given 4-5 star ratings. Mine will be outfitted with Power Functions or 9V depending on final design. I know this was probably not designed with my demographic in mind. I am sure kids will enjoy the set very much and get lots of play from it. Happy Holidays

Great train around the tree at the holidays! Or any time!

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

My boys were excited to see the new set for the holidays. It does not come with the electronic components to make it a true electric train, which of course is a little disappointing but would also make the set cost more. It's still a fantastic piece but I went ahead and got the electronic pieces too for more enjoyment. It will work well around the tree and provide my little Lego hounds with some quality enjoyment for sure!

Power Functions Don't Work as Expected

By YourNickname

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

The train is cute - I like that it is modeled after the old train engines. As far as the set itself, it pretty much met my expectations. But function-wise, it's very poor quality. The first problem I noticed was that the tree doesn't spin. To make it spin you have to push down on the cart when you move the train; otherwise there is not enough friction to get the wheels that spin the tree turning. This was the only problem I noticed in using the set without the power functions. Once you add the power functions... As others have observed, the battery box is a bit of an eye sore. But I wouldn't mind so much if the functions themselves worked as you'd expect them to. But they don't. The engine isn't heavy enough to pull all the carts on its own. It'll go a bit and then sit there with its wheels spinning, unable to pull forward. I know others have complained about this already but it really is a problem. To fix this, I followed another reviewers suggestion and put loom bands on the wheels. I also put bands on the wheels that make the tree spin, which fixed that problem too. Once fixed, the power functions work nicely. The noise the power functions make is a little annoying, but if you have the train going fast enough the chugging on the tracks mostly drowns out the little "beep" the power functions make. The only other thing I want to say is that I wish it came with some straight tracks, rather than all curved pieces. The circle the tracks make is just a little too big for my lego table, so there are two spots where the track is "floating" slightly over the edge of the table. I think it would look cute under a small Christmas tree though (it looks too small for a bigger tree. Not that it wouldn't fit around it but it would probably get lost under the branches.). Bottom line: Cute train, a great addition to the Winter Village. If you want the tree to spin, either put loom bands on the wheels under it or use that cart to push the train around. If you want the power functions, put loom bands on the engine's wheels. I think Lego should work on giving the train wheels more friction in general - maybe they could fuse some rubber traction onto the wheels or provide bands for them? Not everyone has loom bands :P.

The Above Average Christmas Train

By Tinybrickreviews

from Murrieta

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

The Winter Holiday Train is a great addition to the ever growing Holiday collection of LEGO products. It's new, different, and is very nicely designed. Without the motor additions, the train works well on its own. However, when you do add the Power Functions, it does take on some eye sores. Now, I know this is a common complaint for this set, so I won't repeat what has already been said. One thing that I will say is, once the motor is on the front wheel does not do well around turns. The front wheel very often comes off the track going around turns and it remains crooked unless someone manually fixes it. My solution to this was skillfully flipping the motor so the wire is facing the front. That way the motor wire is keeping it tight and in place, rather than unbalanced. It was a little hard to get the wire so it wasn't in the way, but eventually that fixed the problem with moving. Because of having to put in extra work to keep it from crashing every time, it slowly lost favor with me. It was clear that the motor functions was an after thought when designing this thing and it really hurts the quality. I hate to bag on a set for too long, but this one just had too many issue to be enjoyed properly. Don't get me wrong, I definitely do not regret buying it and its still an awesome addition to my Winter Village, but having to babysit it every day was definitely not a fun experience. Pro's -Great design -A good amount of train cars -Minifigures work very well -The passenger car works well -The amount of track provided -No stickers! -Great price Con's -Power Function compatibility -The small toys, while a good addition, do frequently fly out of the train car -The coal tender's design is the only one I don't like. -Can't really fit a Minifigure in the driver compartment in the train.

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

Awesome...love it! I would like to purchase the power accessories however, he is not interested in the remote control. He simply wants to have it go and shut it off when he likes. Is the remote required or can we just purchase the other parts(8884,88000,88002) for it to run as he would like? He would also like to purchase extra track pieces to expand around our tree.

A bit of a disappointment

By Defiant77

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

I was really looking forward to liking this train, as I big fan of Lego trains I was expecting another success for Lego with this train, even the placing of the optional motor was not a make or break for me; even though it does take away from the aesthetic look of the train. What really surprised me most, is how flimsy this train is.Many of the parts are only attached by one or two studs and they tend to be important pieces that make up a foundation for other parts built off it. The coal car is the worst so many times when I pick it up parts fall off, I try to put that piece back on but the slightest pressure causes the sides of the coal car to collapse. Also the magnetic car coupler on the back of the coal car is oddly placed as it attached by two studs and easily falls off and the way the coal car is designed putting back on is difficult. If the coupler had studs on top I could at least use another piece to push down on it to help keep it in place. For a train that is designed to be pushed around the tracks it is not designed well.

Great set

By Max5858

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Creator Expert Winter Holiday Train (10254):

This is a fantastic set. It is easy to build and only takes a couple of hours to put together. It will look great under the tree, but you will probably have to buy more tracks. I bought the additional Power Function parts to motorize the train, because, well, TRAIN. (BTW the automation is not required, and pushing the train is just as fun as using the remote.) MODS: Like others who reviewed this set, I found the engine car too light to carry the motor, and experienced slipping of the wheels, especially when I added another car. I took another reviewer's advice and moved the motor to the tender/coal car and moved it to the middle of the train. It then worked perfectly. I also thought the smoke was a little small for the train, so I made that bigger. Like others, I found that the lamps on the last car made putting a full sized minifig on the outside of the car impossible. I compromised by taking the lamp off of the roof and putting it on a gold pole I had in my stock and had the ticket-taker hold this pole/lamp. MORE MODS: After all this, I watched the Polar Express and decided to turn my new train into the Polar Express. I added a couple of kids and put the hobo on top of the additional car, which I made into the toy transport car for the movie. This ended up being a great place to put the toys that you make in the set. I added an area at the front of the train to stand and made the lamp on the engine bigger. This is a super-cool set and I had a blast making all the mods for it. I think it will be a great addition to the North Pole Workshop and Winter Toy Shop.
