My wife bought this for me to replace a tablet that I broke in a matter of days. So far, I'm glad I broke the other one.
The Archos 7HT is very snappy out of the box. I was able to effortlessly connect to my wireless network (WPA2) and the download speed was adequate. It's not as fast on the network as a laptop, but look at the amount of power that the system provides.
I immediately started customizing EVERYTHING. The first let-down that I experienced was that there was no Android Market. I've become spoiled with the Market on my phone, but I've also learned about side-loading the applications.
The Archos comes with its own version of the Market (in a feeble attempt to make up for this shortcoming). Sadly, in order to use this, you have to sign up with you e-mail, supply a username and password, and then add in your PayPal information. Personally, I'm not comfortable with that. This application was quickly uninstalled and the hunt began for all of my favorite applications. Thankfully, there are countless sites where you, too, can grab a copy of your commonly used programs.
Another problem that I've run into is that the device goes to sleep rather quickly. Don't you dare be browsing a web page and set this thing down to go get a soda. You'll come back and it'll be asleep. While the Archos wakes up VERY quickly, it also closes out of the web browser and leaves you wondering what the heck you were doing when you left.
Also, upon waking, if you have an SD card installed, the device will inform you that the card was unexpectedly removed. Don't worry, it's really still there. Your information it safe. It'll be just a few seconds while the system remounts your card and you can access it as before.
The Archos 7HT is extremely well built. The weight alone made me more confident in the durability, but when it took a flying leap from my hand this evening and slammed into a door, I realized just how well built this thing is. The tablet flew about 4ft sideways and 3ft down hitting the door jam on the corner with only a few scratches being suffered.
The picture quality is impressive. I loaded a couple of .avi's and they were beautiful. The sound through the speakers was adequate, but the headphone sound was excellent.
The capacitive touchscreen is as good as any Android phone out there. There is no pinch zoom, no multitouch, but that's OK.
There are also a few projects starting up for loading custom ROM's. The lack of hardware buttons makes me wonder how it's going to be done, but there are people much smarter than me to take care of that.

I'd definitely buy another Archos 7HT is I needed to.
