We put one gate at the bottom of the stairs and the other is going to be installed at the top. I was skeptical at first because none of the pictures show the gate being used with a banister on the empty wall, which we have in our house, but it worked out perfectly. My husband didn't have a difficult time installing it, but I will say it doesn't slide as easily as it should.

This gate is horrendous. Luckily I purchased it on sale, and as soon as its replacement arrives, I will be returning it to the store.

The only secure part about it is the fact that the frame is screwed into the wall and the bannister, and even that isn't secure. One of the screws supplied snapped right off. The hinge is composed of two L-shaped bolts that just drop into the holes on the frame. You can lift the gate right out when it's open! It's made of sturdy wood, but the whole thing is rather flimsy, and my 2 year old figured out how to open it right away. It's also a pain to open and close, so if you've got only one hand to do so, good luck.

I would not recommend this gate at all.

We specifically got this product so we didn't have to screw into the banisters, and this prduct delivers nicely. The banisters we have were very similar to the picture, installation was very easy and it is still holding strong. The only recommendation I have(which I did) is use some silicon spray to wipe down the friction points. This will allow the gate to slide on itself much better and extend the life.

I highly recommend this gate for wide openings (we had a 46" opening), where other gates can't cover the span.

We us ours at the top of our stairs and no matter what you do the darn thing will not slide nicely to open or close.
It looks ok and the bannister mount is the reason we bought it. But we expected better quality for what we paid.
The locking mechanism is a joke! You practically have to bend over and set it in the bottom before moving the top in and locking it.
And the bottom support piece doesnt reach the ground when mounted to a normal railing

I like this gate. It has worked very well for our house. We have a wall on one side and a banister on the other. My son is now almost 21 months old and he enjoys climbing on it, even though he knows quite well that is not allowed.
I am not certain why others have reviewed this gate as "flimsy." My gate has been exceptional in it's durability....my son has proven it as he is not forgiving towards it!
The handle can be a bit awkward, but in the end I can open and close it with one hand and it keep my baby safe, which is all that matters.

I bought this gate because I didn't want to drill into the banisters at the bottom of the stairs, and so it absolutely meets that requirement in a safe way. Unfortunately, that's about all the positives; however, because that's what I was looking for, that's worth three stars! The other plus is that when open, there is nothing to trip over.

Given how expensive it was, even with the 20% off coupon, I was expecting sturdier wood with a better finish. This is light, cheap wood with a light, cheap finish. It is very difficult to slide the gate (a generous application of dry bar soap on all places where wood touches wood helped immensely). It takes a fair amount of concentration to line up the bottom catch both horizontally and vertically while squeezing the latch, but it can be done with one hand.

this is a great product if you have a metal stair railing that you cannot drill into or pressure mount. easy to assemble in half an hour

We bought this gate for the top of our stairs. We spent the extra money thinking this would be a good gate and also because we have a railing at the top and didnt want to drill into it. Well after putting it up and trying different things, the bottom of the gate does not go right into the lock, you have to put the top part in and then with our foot push the bottom part in. And the color of the wood is not the color on the box! Worst gate ever!

Have had this gate for over a year now--in addition to two other gates in our home that we prefer. This gate, while it looks great, has just been awful. It serves its purpose, but is loud to unlock and we always have to worry about waking up the baby! And its flimsy. My daughter seems like she's going to rip it off the hinges. I'm just not impressed...at all.
