This is the best product for watching catepillars turn into butterflies! My son and I collect Monarch catepillars, feed them, and watch them hatch into butterflies. The cage is strong and I bought 5 of them and none show any signs of breaking. When the chyrsallis form on the lid, simply snap the lid into another empty cage so you can wash the dirty one. I separate the catepillars according to size so each hatch at the same time. Place some napkins on the bottom on the cage to catch fluid from hatching butterflies. We have released over 50 Monarch butterflies!!

Bought as gifts for my grandchildren They love to catch fireflies, but didn''t have anything to put them in.
I would not recommend this product for that purpose. However, it has worked well for toads, salamanders, etc. It affords them the opportunity to observe these animals before releasing them back to their habitat.

All the backyard safari toys have the same problem, they reel you in with the promise of great educational fun only to find out half the stuff doesn't work. The bug vacuum is too weak to vacuum up an ant. The binoculars don't focus- heck they even have a whistle that doesn't work (the dollar store even delivers on that one). We also had a bee (placed in the magnifying bug cage super carefully by mom and dad) crawl out while our son was observing it through the hinge space.Basically, they sold out to make the stuff cheaply offshore and lost the point to the product along the way. More fodder for landfills!
I would give this 5 stars if it only worked!
