Like others said, one would expect a toy advertising itself as a musical instrument - and from a company emphasizing learning - to be musical. Like the toy xylophones I played with as a kid in the 1970s, I figured this one, with all its electronic bells and whistles, would certainly have bars that played a major scale (do, re, mi...). Nope - not even a semblance of one. The notes are random, all over the place. They supposedly match pitches in the electronic part ("Play this note!"), but those are out of tune. I contacted the company. The service representative told me to change the batteries. I wrote back, explaining that the bars are not battery-dependent, and the response I got was, "Please change the batteries as we earlier demanded,then press the bars and the volume button (at the same time) 5 to 7 times."

Also, there are these little songs the animals sing when buttons are pushed, but the lyrics are hard to understand. One of them sounds like it's saying "Flip your flippers (or "Hop-hop-hop," or whatever, depending on the animal) ..."when you're dead"! My husband and I both thought that but didn't say anything to our toddler - and one day, we heard her singing along, "...when you're dead."

My daughter has had this toy for several months now and does occasionally play with it, but I'm surprised that Leapfrog would put out a product that's supposed to be a musical instrument and is so anti-musical. No amount of special electronic features can change that.

My two year old grandaughter loves, loves, loves it. She drags it everywhere. She is loving playing the movie, listening to the sounds of the animals. Great, educational toy.

I bought this because I want to expose my son to musical instruments at an early age. However, I also don't want him to grow up completely tone deaf! We can't even play basic nursery rhymes with it. The notes aren't there! An instrument like this will ruin a child's ability to learn to play music when they are older. This is the critical period when a child must learn tune & rhythm correctly, or struggle with it for the rest of their life. Huge FAIL, LeapFrog.

My son just got this today for Christmas and so far he loves it. He hasn't gotten the hang of using the hammer but loves pressing the buttons that make music.
