Product Description

With 100 brightly colored wooden beads that slide back and forth, this hands-on learning toy helps with counting skills as well as the development of hand-eye coordination. Dimensions: 12H x 12W x 2.75D inches.

Extend your child's conceptual understanding and skill acquisition in math with these engaging STEM Learning Tips.
1. The abacus is considered an ancient calculator that dates back to 2300 BC. Then and now, It is used to teach math skills, such as counting, addition, and subtraction at the early learning level and more complex operations like multiplication and division to older children. Use the abacus to develop your child's counting skills. Have your child move all the beads to one side of the abacus frame. Move 2 beads on the first row to the other side of the frame and have your child count them. Continue this process on each row, moving a different number of beads each time and have your child count them. Then have your child count how many beads remain on each row.
2. The abacus also promotes a child's ability to understand patterns. Guide your child to create a pattern of beads on each row. For example, a group of 2 beads, a space, one bead, a space, 2 beads, a space, one bead and so on. Have your child repeat the pattern of beads on each row and when complete, view the pattern. Perhaps your child can then suggest a new pattern to try.

Our kids love their Abacus! At the ages of 3 and 4 they can count to 100, add and subtract with ease! With an abacus, they are able to learn the math concepts, not just memorizing numbers. When they grasped the concepts, there was no stopping their progress!I can realistically see us moving to multiplication within the next 7 or 8 months. They say things like, "Math is fun!" and play number games, quizzing each other! I couldn't be happier with this product. Every child should have one! It is now my baby shower and birthday gift of choice! - And it's sturdy too!

I purchase this product in the store without closely inspecting the quality of the wood finish. I did so at home to discover the finish was rough with prickly small burs. As I rubbed my hand over the wood I was stuck with a splinter.
This item seems sturdy but they quality of the wood finish could be much safer for children soft skin/hands.
I had to sand the wood with 120 grit, steel wool 000 to get it very smooth. Next I sealed it with water based clear coat to give it a nice semi-glossy finish.
I will be hesitant to purchase this line of products in the future.
Please make sure your brand 'Imaginarium' toys safe for children.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Imaginarium Abacus:

Got this as an extra manipulative for my 4 1/2yr old with her K5 homeschool about half way through the year. We were struggling with teens, counting by tens, & book was starting concept of counting by five's. What an amazing difference this made, everthing seems to be clicking. We don't use it everyday (marshmallows are still fun) but this definitely helped. As an added bonus her 2 1/2yr old brother fights with her over who's turn it is to "play" with it.

My husband got it for the kids, to help them with their math homework. They use it, instead of using paper to do circles or sticks. This helps my kids better and they do their math faster.
