To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

This is a much better alternative than buying the rechargeable battery box and the separate power adapter. For someone that creates their own custom creations such as trains that require a battery box, this is the way to go. This power box holds 6 AAA batteries. For about $15 you can be rechargeable AAA's and not need to buy both the rechargeable battery box and charger. The size of the box is identical and also provides the same functionality of the rechargeable.

I received a cargo train set for Christmas (YAY!) - and after assembling the set, the train did not have power. After disassembling a bit, I tested the battery box (power functions 88000) and it was not working even with 6 brand new energizer AAA batteries. I figured it was a broken box, so Lego sent me a new one at no charge. The new one arrived, and to my dismay, the same result - no power with 6 new energizer batteries. I finally read the other reviews on this product, and saw that some batteries may have difficulty making good connections as the leads for the positive ends of the AAA batteries are set back pretty far. So I started messing with the leads, and aluminum foil, and other battery brands, and I finally got the connections to all work. Time consuming and frustrating, this piece needs to be redesigned in the same dimensions and re-released. All that said, once the train got going - it was awesome!

I am not the Lego expert builder but my grandson is. I got this for him to put some of his sets into motion and he has done a great job.

Great Battery Box!

By CreativeLEGOBuilder

from Boyds

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

I just got this for Christmas with my 60052 Cargo Train. I have to say that this battery box is amazing. It works great and I have had no problems with it. It works on my train and is helping power it. It has a long battery life and is very snug just like a regular brick but you'd expect that from LEGO with their amazing clutch power. HOWEVER, I do not like the fact that this uses six batteries to power it. I am getting a little annoyed that it uses up my batteries (And money!) but hey if it's enough to make it work, I'll take it! If I get more trains or sets that can be motorized, I will definitely buy this separately with the other power functions.

good

By FredFerreira84

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

It's well built and reliable, just still looks it has ancient technology so Lego could think of getting new battery systems for the future. or invest on more "eco" power functions, why not "tiny solar panels", like for the calculators but stronger, or even the new solar chargers we see on marked, its just a why not suggestion since I know lego wants to go more eco and has invested millions to replace the plastic for other much more suistanable material but it could be a start and a great way to empower your eco marketing strategy... The Horizon Express train CREATOR EXPERT SET doesn't come with power functions included so had to buy it, bought this same product to upgrade the NEW Ferris Wheel which is a SET I also recommend lively. you could have made a Pack set for this and all other equipment with the train and Ferris Wheel mentioned above.

Good when it works, but has a design flaw

By rmccle

from Greenbelt

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

The contacts on the positive side are recessed and the diameter of the recess hole is too small. Many batteries which adhere to the AAA standard do not fit, for instance, Amazon Basics rechargeables. I was hoping to have the functionality of the rechargeable pack without the high cost. However, my rechargeable AAA batteries, and some brands of Alkaline batteries do not fit. I also feel like they could make the design either more compact or easier to attach to Technic creations. Otherwise, it works fine when the right brand of battery is installed.

Difficult to insert or change batteries

By Eileen

from Austin

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

It is not easy to get the little screws off to insert or change the batteries. It seems to need a LOT of turns, of the little screws, before one can access the area to put the batteries. I have been working on it for several minutes now, and still have not managed to get the top removed. I might give up before I am successful.

Battery Box not working?

By ChristiansDad2

from Perth

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

Got this battery box with the High speed train(60051) and had a similar problem as a previous reviewer. Swopped Duracell battery's for Energizer and it sprung into life. Contact points on Duracell seem to have a slightly greater circumference and don't seat well into the box. My little boy loves the train and has been playing with it for hours. I loved helping him build it too:)

Design Defect?

By gan777

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Power Function AAA Battery Box (8800):

This item came with the 60052 Cargo Train set I bought for my boys. When I put new batteries in, it would not work at all. I looked closer and see the metal contacts for the battery top posts are recessed too far and the batteries cannot make contact. I put a small piece of aluminum foil in the recessed hole before putting in each battery and it works perfectly fine. I am using Duracell batteries so it isn't a low quality battery problem. Perhaps I just got one from a bad batch? Or have others experienced this same problem?
