Product Description

Send your train roaring down the track with the LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002)! Add the Train Motor to your train engine together with the required Power Functions parts, layout your tracks and your train is ready to roll!

To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

great Moter but could be stronger

    By anthonytheawesomest

    from Gilbert

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

I got this product in a train set for Christmas it has great speed on the speed remote but not a lot of torque, and if you have a lot of carpet in your house like I do your Moter won't run at all. and also this moter is hard to put in other models besides trains because it is hard to stabeise it with out it spinning around. but this moter is really strong is trains so I would not recomened using two of these in a train. So now to the pros and cons. pros. really fast on track and tile. pretty strong when in a train cons torque is not very good on carpet. drains batteries pretty fast. hard to make it stable. over all it is a good product for running on track and tile.

Excellent Power Function addition for Lego Trains!

    By TimmyTopHat

    from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

Absolutely love using this, as it's compatible even with older sets: Now I can run my old 9V trains on my non-9V tracks! My only problem with it isn't a flaw with it directly, but rather it's absence from the Lego Digital Designer catalog.

This is an excellent LEGO product. It is strong and can go fast. It is easy to install and can be used with almost all LEGO trains. At fourteen dollars, it is an excellent deal.

Improved Low end Torque but needs improvement

    By AdultFanOfLegos2011

    from Rockville

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

Improved over its predecessor - it has more pulling power - especially at the lower power level range - this is very important since it doesn't draw power power from the train track but must draw power from the 9v battery pack. Unlike the Power Function M-Motor - the Power Function Train Motor does not have enough torque/power at the low current level (as supplied by four Lego Power Function Solar Panels) to pull a train car. So I'm disappointed in that respect. At high speeds especially when the track is not flat or the track is making a sharp turn - the rail wheels might lift off the track or slip on the track causing either a derailment or loss of power. There is sort of a balancing act between keeping rolling resistance down and maintaining enough wheel traction - don't know the answer to this one - I've seen a bunch of lego track modifications to deal with this works for modern diesel trains but notfor powering a working steam engine

    Must have for lego trains.

    By rsc75

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

I don't think I can add anything new on top of previous reviews, so I'll just add one of my tips. You can use a size 014 o-ring or similar (I've used multiple sizes, but found 014 to run smoothest) to replace the clear rings lego provides with these motors. The increased surface area allows the train to grip better and ride softer. Also, thank you to the guy who recommended using two motors and a switch. It was a very good tip.

Good motor for my 9Volt Lego trains

    By BVG9Volt

    from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

I use this motor as secundary motor for my old 9Volt Lego trains. I power the PF train motor by attaching it with the PF power cable (8886) on cable of the 9Volt train light. This cable is connected with the 9Volt train motor. So be sure your 9Volt motor still works. I recommand that you have enough room in your loco because the cables use some place and be sure that the trains motors are attached one a chassis. The Metroliner (4558 - 10001) is good example of a train that can be used with a secondary motor. My Metroliner runs smootly on the 9Volt tracks now.

You Need To Get Two of These!

    By OmniPotent42

    from Lindon

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

This motor is okay by itself in either the 10219 Maersk Train or in a custom train of yours. But if you REALLY want to see your train go, get 2 motors as well as the 8869 Power Functions Control Switch. (In the Maersk Train, you will have to take out some bricks to fit the switch, but it doesn't show at all on the outside.) This will allow you to put 2 motors on your train, and lets one motor run forward while the other runs backward, all while using the same knob for the throttle. A $15 upgrade TOTALLY worth it. Using one motor, you get decent torque and traction, and good top speed. However, on speed 1 it can't really get around turns and slows down a lot on turns in the higher speeds. It also starts to slow down when you add more than 2 cars. But if you add a second motor, your train will be able to pull EXPONENTIALLY more cars, and even reach a higher top speed while pulling cars. In fact, you may want to not use the top speed, because sometimes the locomotive will uncouple from the rest of the train while moving, and if the locomotive is pushing cars, it has the tendency to push them off the track on curves. If you want to use the train on the top speed, use cars with low centers of gravity (like the ones that come with the Maersk Train). The only reason you wouldn't want this cheap upgrade is if you don't have many cars. I have tested the train with all of my 7 cars (and I want to test it with even more!!!!!), and it runs just as well as it does with only one motor pulling two cars. Overall, it's the best upgrade you can get for your train.

    Improved motor for IR trains

    By Suspet

    from Humlebaek

Comments about LEGO Power Functions Train Motor (88002):

This is a better motor than the 8866. Greater pulling power. Smooth running. Wire included. The only problem that might happen, is damage to the wire, and NOT being able to repair/replace it. It's a shame the the bogie sides are not included, as they were on 9volt motors.
