To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

This is simply an awesome truck. From the rugged and beautiful (In an ugly, industrial kind of way) looks, to the stunning functions, this kit has it all. Previous reviews covered how awesome this truck is. I would like to dispel a few things that other reviewers have written. I have seen complaints about the straight 4 cylinder engine, and one reviewer actually stated that it was a way for "Lego to save money in the kit". The real truck has a 4 cylinder engine. Second, one reviewer complained that the truck bed was too small. This truck bed is identical to the real thing respectively. In fact, the details are correct right down to the red and white sticker. The details of this truck are outstanding, and I enjoy simply staring at it. The build was complex, but it was complex in a good way. I expected to have this truck done in half the time it actually took me, but that meant that I had twice as much fun building it. Again, this set is quite complex, and the design is incredible. That brings me to a review I read here which was titled, "DO NOT BUY THIS KIT!!!!". The reviewer gave this kit a poor review because he and his 12 year old son were unable to assemble it. Remember, this is not a truck that you shove batteries in and watch it zoom all over the house. This is a model. It's an outstanding model that is realistic in form and function, and is also a learning experience for those who simply love mechanical things. I love this truck. If I was a rich man, I'd have an entire fleet of Lego Unimogs. The only complaints I have, better described as critiques, are directed at Lego, and not at this truck, and they are the following: While building the chassis, I noticed that the frame on the front was not lined up with the suspension assembly. I noted that when the suspension was fully compressed, they did line up, but when the suspension was at rest, they did not. I spent hours going over my work, disassembling and reassembling the front chassis. I did not realize until I looked through countless Lego forums that this was a design issue. Every time I have come across a problem while assembling a Lego set, I have always been able to find my mistake. In this case, there was no mistake, it was simply the way the chassis was designed. It would have been very helpful to put a footnote in the instruction manual to save people like me hours of time by saying it's supposed to be like that. Second, a picture is not always worth a thousand words. This is a fairly complex kit, and better instructions on how to operate it would have been helpful. Granted, I was able to learn in just a few minutes, but something saying, "Push the yellow lever up for PTO control and down for pneumatic control" would be nice. Finally, calling it 4 wheel drive is kind of false advertising. 4 wheel drive "ready" would have been more appropriate. It has the parts to do it, but if it does not move under it's own power, it's not 4 wheel drive. At first I thought I built something wrong or simply didn't yet figure out how to operate all of the functions. Again, I had to look on several forums before I realized that this kit, as it comes, does not move under it's own power. Now, these little complaints DO NOT detract from the kit. I have this truck sitting on my printer as I type this, and every time I look up at it sitting on my printer I get a warm fuzzy feeling! I simply love it. Just for the record, I've collected hundreds of Lego sets from my pre-teen years on up, and Lego has been a large part of my life. They have always been amazing and they just keep getting better. BRAVO on this truck Lego. Bravo!

Here's the deal. The set's drive train and suspension really bugs me. The geometry of the front suspension, in terms of the caster angle and the position of the kingpins, is completely wrong. They could of made it properly, but the designers had to make it stupid simple so that the price of the set would not be too expensive. (See pictures to understand me better) Whenever you try to drive the model over a bump, the wheel uncontrollably steers to the right or left, this is known as bump steer. This bump steer is existent because of how close the kingpins are to the center of the vehicle as to of versus the inside of the wheel. This is made worse by the fact that they use the portal block piece that is suppose to increase the ground clearance. The castor is also negative, it should be positive but it is not. This also contributes to the terrible bump steer. All these incorrect aspects of the suspension geometry also contribute to the terrible effort it takes to steer. It is very stiff. This is a disappointment, as the suspension is one of the biggest parts to this set. Many people think that it is great, but that is only because they do not understand real suspension geometry on cars. The pneumatic crane is a great addition, but the moving action of the crane is very fast and requires skill to control very finely, as these are pneumatics not hydraulics. The claw part also requires a long time to move after the switch is pressed. So, both big parts, the crane and suspension, of this set have problems, so I am rating this set generously as good. The best part of the set was building it. The price could be a bit lower, but it is decent since it includes the pneumatics system, but I do not like how it does not have very many power functions elements, a switch at least would have been great, we also never get LED's in these sets. The playability is poor. Not good for obstacles. The crane is hard to control, but still pretty fun. The only let down of the crane is the claw, its too slow.

There's a reason why this set is consistently sold out. One of the best LEGO building experiences. Even if you only plan to buy for display purposes it's totally worth it. The pneumatic feature is just icing on the cake.

my largest technic set so far

Comments about LEGO Technic Unimog U400 (8110):

I have built lego for 45 years, and have 100s of pounds of lego in my house. But other than a few smaller sets for the kids never got much into lego technic. I built the 9398 4x4 this fall and got absolutely hooked. I like this set even more. I regret I never gave the technic theme a chance before, I missed out on so much. The detail is amazing. It is amazing how well this sticks together, even my young grandchildren can have fun with it (once it is built).

Comments about LEGO Technic Unimog U400 (8110):

We got this for my son because he is crazy about Legos, and it seems like everything we get him is not hard enough! Even the waterfall house from Frank Lloyd Wright took him all of about 3 hrs, and done. This Unimog he has been at it at least 8 hrs/day for 4 days and is just now seeing it come together.
This is well worth the buy, but make sure your 'Legoee' is very experienced, because of the difficulty level, it took my son and I some time to figure out certain pieces, the truck is so detailed that some of the views in the instructions take some intense focus!

Good Luck you will have fun with this one!!

Great Technic product for moderate to advanced builders. Great detail, plus the ability to download a free alternate model from the LEGO website! The price is always a bummer on the really good sets, but I think you will be glad you got it if you can get your hands on one!

U L T I M A T E Technic Set!

By MrPaulo23

from Jersey City

Comments about LEGO Technic Unimog U400 (8110):

I got it as a birthday gift for my 23rd birthday. When I opened the set, I'm like WOW, this thing is a monster even before getting the set I was already on the lookout for this thing and just by watching the videos, this exudes with awesomeness. Being a big fan of the real Unimog which does monster duties for the civil and military sectors, I am totally impressed with the suspension system which if I may say is rock solid, the four-cylinder engine is also a true representation of the truck's engine, I expected to build the set in around 6-8 hours straight but ended up finishing a mere 10 straight hours, its my fault as I scattered each plastic section containing its 2048 pieces. That shouldn't deter anyone from getting this set, this is my first time also to own a pneumatic operated Technic set so that also impresses me a lot on this set. Moving back to the suspension, it also interesting to see the truck's unique suspension (which rotates at a specific angle while maintaining its stability) transformed to a piece of Lego marvel. The wheels also add to the truck's factor and its just so impressive. However there are flaws about this set: - The doors doesn't open (as detailed as it may seem, the doors were just bolted to one of the beams instead of making a hinged door) - No wheel hub covers (a sprocket design wheel from a 42006 can solve this) - Stickers (ever since getting the 9397 and 42010, I noticed the decals are no longer printed a specific panel) - Winch cable is short - PTOs seem a little weak (I don't know how Lego motors work but by observation the sole motor should have been a high-power, high-torque unit) Otherwise these flaws are little and sure anyone who owns it and is planning to own one can find ways of keeping this beast more impressive. The $200 is worth every penny on this amazing set. Kudos to Lego for making the Unimog!

Comments about LEGO Technic Unimog U400 (8110):

I have been building standard Lego kits for many years, but this was only my second Technics model. It is a wonderfully involved challenge for any one who enjoys intricate mechanical models, particularly those which work. Even I was a bit intimidated at first by the sheer number of component pieces when they were first sorted out on the table. However due to the excellent color pictorial instructions, actual construction is not any more difficult than much smaller kits. However one must be very careful to differentiate between many small pieces of similar design and their spatial orientation in the model as it is built. But taking your time building it is really one of the enjoyable parts about Lego kits, since they are so precisely engineered and fit together so well as a result.
Great kit1 I highly recommend it for anyone of a mechanical bent.
