This review is primarily to warn those that already have the Volkswagen Beetle that the Van is about half the scale of the Beetle. I was rather dumbfounded as I realized this little by little during the build. I was expecting the Van to be larger than the Beetle since that's, you know, how it is in real life.

However, despite this, it still is a very interesting build with several of those elusive AHA! moments Lego fans are looking for in new sets. Just don't expect it to be huge. Would have given this 5 stars except for the size. I'll include a picture if I can with the two Volkswagen sets side by side for comparison.

I really really wanted the camper van when it came out and I still like it. But I can't help but feel that it was released before the build was completely resolved. There are several weak spots on it that make it slightly disappointing: the front and back end of the roof aren't secured so they keep falling off. Same goes for the extendable canopy. The mechanism is tech, but it's only stuck onto the main roof with bricks so they come off pretty much the first time you extend the roof and are really fiddly to stick back down. The whole mechanism could be tech and it wouldn't be a problem. The foldable bench inside the van is also a week spot. These are the main complaints but they make play very frustrating and unfortunately overshadow the many nice little touches. On the bases of that and seeing that it's quite a pricey set, I wouldn't recommend it unless you just want it on your mantle piece.

VW Camper Van

By granwindy

from Chicago

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

I don't have a personal connection to the VW Camper Van like a lot of other reviewers do but I grew up during the time when you saw a lot of these vehicles on the road. I've always been intrigued with the camper and was delighted when it came out as a set. It was extremely time consuming to build given the fact that the bags weren't numbered and there was a multitude of tiny pieces because of the detail in this set. Construction was truly a labor of love and the detail is what makes the building experience so enjoyable for me. My grandchildren were envious and couldn't believe I had built it myself, although I have built 7 modular sets on my own. I've had no problem with parts falling off when its handled. Looking forward to building the mini Cooper next. In the future, would really like to see a newer VW Beetle set come out.

Favorite Piece So Far

By afarone89

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

I just recently started getting back into the Lego world. This was my first Expert build and I loved it. The detail on this piece is amazing. My favorite part is the t-shirt hanging in the window that says "Make Lego Models, Not War". It was an average build, the only trouble I had was with the pop up roof. I had difficulty getting it to stay together while building, but once it was built, no issues. It took 9.5 hours to build but I was taking my time and enjoying the build. Great piece for the price.

Fun with Bully

By altesKind

from Weiz

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

This set was a birthday present from my kids and I loved it. Having played with LEGO almost all my life, this VW was a very nice continuation, I guess one is never too old for that. The T1 Bus set is great, I still like to open all doors and admire the little parts and attention to details. The only disappointment was that there is no steering but I took that as a challenge and implemented a full steering linkage (I also did that on the MINI Cooper set), see photos. I hope that LEGO will issue more classic car sets, there is a lot of important cars which should be conserved by LEGO!

My 9-year-old's favorite Christmas gift

By MissL

from Waterford

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

My 9-year-old asked for this for Christmas as well as the large "Fire Plane." Given that he loves planes, I figured he'd prefer the plane over this VW camper, but I was very wrong. He spent two straight days working on this camper and enjoyed every minute of it. There are so many cool details, like a lava lamp, engine with moving parts, and fabric drapes! Now we have to get a display case for it to keep it nice and clean.

    Legos Forever

    By afternoon49

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

I have been buying Legos for my son for 25 years or more. Even though he is almost 30 he gets Legos for Christmas every year from his mommy !! One year I sent them to his girlfriend and asked her not to put them under the tree till Christmas morning. He was looking Christmas Eve and she said he had this disappointed look on his face when nothing had that "Lego" shake !! He then told her he guessed he was getting too old for Legos. Needless to say, come Christmas morning when she gave him the box last his face lit up like the tree itself. She sent me a picture to prove it. I had made his Christmas and he had made mine. We are states apart and that was my Christmas miracle. Thank you Legos for making special time even more special.

I want a real one now...

    By Waldo

    from Las Vegas

Comments about LEGO Creator Volkswagen T1 Camper Van (10220):

Let me say this is one of the best kits I ever had, worth the time to build, worth the money to spend, worth all the smiles it has received. My dad had bought a much later model (early 70's) with the popup roof and we (my dad, four sisters and me) drove over 2000 miles in one trip, I only have fond memories of that trip ( and others in this iconic camper). I was at the Lego store getting gift cards for the grand kids and there it was, this kit, and it brought back a flood of memories. I brought it home and started the build that day and have had no regrets, period. The Good: Great detail, like the items that the casual viewer will never see such as the wall mounted lamps and the potted plant. Love the sink, mini fridge, mirror on the closet door and the "Make Lego Models, Not War" t-shirt hanging in the closet. The lava lamp fits the era well, and putting on the VW emblem on the nearly last step just made the whole experience priceless. I like that the roof comes off easily to access and view all the internal details. The instructions were very clear. The Bad: The model is fragile, but heck, its made out of Legos, put it back together when something falls off. However, this means that the grand kids will tear it up in a flash, which makes this model less ideal to play with. I wish the popup roof was not simulated and that the model was steerable. If you smile the first time you see the kit, buy it and it will not be the last smile you give when looking at the finished model!

This set is the about the same size as the lego Ferrari set. This set has great attention to detail! The sets can fold back to make a bed, the top can pop up, and even has a detailed engine!
