R Us took me on a trip to memory lane. This was my most loved toy as a child. I had an instant emotional reaction.

The recommended minimum age of the Fisher Price record player is 18 months, but I purchased this for my three-month old. The good thing about an item like this is a baby can listen to the sounds without playing with it directly.

What I like about this toy is children don't get to experience anything like a record player. This is important for understanding of history and progression of technology. Even Hard-drives and CDs work in a similar fashion.

As a child I used to love putting the five records in the back and carrying it around with the carry handle. I wanted my son to have the same experience that I had myself.

This record player is not designed the same as the original. The look is exactly the way I remember but it is not the same the way it works. The old records had bumps that rotated the various sections of the head to make the noise, and as such worked completely as a wind-up toy. This modern toy does wind up to rotate the record but uses batteries and digital recording to produce the sound.

This is a great toy because of the emotional connection and being able to share the experience. Had this item work exactly the same as the original and wind up I would have given this a 5 star rating. All this being said modern learning toys are designed with more playing fun, and this is a great item just because of the experience

My husband and I were very excited to buy this for our 1 year old for Christmas and if our budget had allowed we would have purchased the whole line of retro toys(we also purchased the phone). Our little girl loved it but keep in mind that she is 1, a few days after Christmas she pulled it off the sofa and hit our laminate floor and that was it! It no longer plays music, the turn table still turns but no music. We took it apart and everything but nothing helped. We also didn't understand the battery issue, if it used to be made with a real music box then it would make sense that it wouldn't work but it's not it's an electrical panel! It just doesn't make sense that it wouldn't work. We paid $30 for this, I understand that it fell but I feel for what we paid it should still work. We are disappointed and havent' thrown it away yet in hopes that one day it will magically work again, that and our daughter likes to put the records on and off. We are considering buying another one but I would like it to be on sale!

I ordered the Fisher-Price Classics Record Player expecting to get a new version of the item that my girls had when they were little in the 80's and 90's...I was sadly disappointed to see how poorly it was made compared to the original product. To top it all off it didn't even work! The only thing classic about this item is the price...it does not compare to the product that Fisher- Price used to make.

            Exceptionally disappointed with this!

It arrived and looked in fantastic condition when it was received. However, we found out today after my niece opened it up and we got batteries put into it that it is defective and won't play the music like it should.

Will be taking it in to the local story in the coming week to try to get this resolved.

Comments about Basic Fun Inc Fisher-Price Classics Record Player:

My two year old loves putting the records on and dancing to the music. I'm sure it will provide him fun for years to come. I wish the player was more like the original that they used to make. This player has a music box sound, but isn't one. There are four nibs on the bottom of the "needle" that the grooves on the "record" push up, playing a different song depending on which ones it pushes up. My son doesn't know the difference, but it would be neater if it worked like an actual music box.

It seems to be pretty sturdy, too. I will definitely look for Fisher-Price Classics the next time I'm looking for a new toy.

Comments about Basic Fun Inc Fisher-Price Classics Record Player:

So this is a great idea for a toy. Kids love music and being able to operate their own equipment. That's where the idea sort of fizzled out in actuality. I know these were available in a non-battery version when I was a child during the 70s but I'm not sure how the ease of use (or lack thereof) compares with the newer version. The age recommendation by FP is 18 months+. As a mom, I must disagree. I bought this as a gift for my daughter's 2nd birthday. She is intelligent and 6 months past the youngest recommended age of 18 mos. It has caused nothing but frustration. First, even though it operates on batteries nowadays, it still requires cranking in order to play. At first I thought this was a good thing because it keeps the battery from running down. But read on. Second issue is the way the records fit on the turn table. They have the little hole in the center that fits the spindle, which she is able to manage well, but in addition to fitting the spindle through the hole, there are also four other smaller holes/grooves on the record that must be properly positioned in order for the record to lie flat on the player. Too detailed for my daughter to see that it is not correctly seated. Definitely too intricate for an 18 month old. Third hinderance is when the arm needs to be moved over the record. It is not a simple push over motion. It must be lifted and pushed simultaneously. Really?? For 18 monthers? And if your child FINALLY works their way through this maze of musical frustrations successfully, there is one last remaining setback. The switch must be in the ON position. So, if your 18-month old can fit a single record to a turn table with 5 places it must correctly be positioned in, can crank the record player, can make sure the arm is lifted up and pushed over in one step, then can turn a switch to the ON position before finally hearing their beloved song begin to play, then this would be a fantastic purchase for them. If your child is typically impatient and not prone to having all of these skills under control and waiting on a 5-step process before their toy "works" then please wait a couple of years. I am normally a huge fan of Fisher Price, but marketing this item for ages younger than 3 years... Well, they TOTALLY missed the boat this time.
