There is nothing that i would consider great about this kit. So far we have assembled the locomotive and the fire truck. As long as you have power tools, drill bits, your own screws, a better quality wood glue, and a lot of patience you will eventually complete the project. Some of the pieces were broken out of the package and others broke while putting it together. The pre-drilled holes did not line up. Diagrams in the instructions indicated to put the pieces together in the wrong direction. There were not enough screws to finish the project.

This product was terrible. Most of the pieces did not match the pictures in the directions. The screws were too short to even attach the pieces and it did not even contain the different size screws that the directions said were in the package. It was impossible to even fit any of the pieces together. We were very disappointed in this product, especially after the amount of money that we spent on it. Very disappointed that we gave this to our son as a Christmas gift and we were unable to use it except for play with the wood pieces in his pretend wood shop.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 The Home Depot Custom Project Mega Kit:

It is not possible to even put this toy together.

It contained parts that did not match the instructions and did not function with each other.
Of the four toys you are supposed to be able to build, ONLY ONE IS EVEN BUILDABLE with the parts contained in the box.

I say this with seven years of experience as a professional carpenter and someone who has never bothered to write a review on a toy before.

I purchased this product for my son for Christmas. I was looking forward to putting it together with my four year old son and he was very excited also. However, I was very disappointed to find out that almost the entire kit was useless.

1. You are provided with screws that are too short to attach the pieces together.
a. The instructions for the Fire Truck and the Train Engine describe 1/2", 5/8", 3/4", 1" and 1 1/4" screws
for assembly
b. The set only came with 1/2" screws and almost all of the wood pieces are 3/8" thick or more, meaning
that ALMOST NONE OF THE SCREWS ARE LONG ENOUGH TO ATTACH ANY OF THE PIECES TOGETHER and NONE of the toys that
require screws ARE BUILDABLE without buying new screws.

2. The designs for some of the toys are not practical.
a. When building the Biplane toy, you are expected to drive a 1/16" diameter nail into the end of a 1/8"
diameter toothpick-sized stick to attach the wheels. Of course if you were to try that the toothpick will
just split in half.
b. You are also expected to attach the toothpick-sized stick to two more 1/2" long, 1/4" thick sticks that
you then glue the ends of to the bottom of the Biplane. This of course is not anywhere near strong enough to
support the weight of the tiny toy.

3. The instructions do not match the parts in the box.
a. Assuming that you were to go buy your own longer screws to attach the parts together, the pieces provided
in the box often do not even match the pictures in the instructions, to the point of having a completely
different toy in the case of the Train Engine and rendering the instructions useless.
b. The instructions are also horribly drawn, with no apparent quality control, meaning that the instructions
show several of the parts put on backwards from how they are actually designed to be put together or show
extra graphics randomly on the page that the CAD designer simply forgot to delete. While this is in no way
something that greatly affects the usability of the product, it should give you some idea of how the general
poor effort that seems to have been put into the design of this toy.

If nothing else, the fact that I am writing a review on a $$ toy should be a statement in itself of how disappointing this toy is. My son did have fun painting the one toy that we were able to build, a Race Car that was made of only 9 pieces of wood and held together with glue and four tiny nails. However, this was NOT worth the $$ I paid at Toys R Us.
