Product Description

The Shelby American team made its first entry at the 1965 Daytona 2000, but also had a series of setbacks in 1965. The experience gained from past difficulties enabled the 7.0-liter V-8-powered GT-40 MK II to dominate races in Riverside, Daytona, and Sebring which all lead to the grand finale at the grueling Le Mans 24 hour race in 1966, where the GT-40 swept the podium with a 1-2-3 finish. The Gulf Blue #1 car is the most well known vehicle, driven by Ken Miles, that led the 24 hour Lemans race. It was built to win long-distance sports car races against Ferrari (who won at Le Mans six times in a row from 1960 to 1965). It is also the first car in Le Mans history to win the race more than once with the same chassis, and one of three cars to have won with the same chassis. With this car, Ford became in 1966 the first and so far the only American constructor to win overall at Le Mans.
