Launched in April, 1936, the U.S.S. Yorktown was among the first "true" aircraft carriers ever built. It was one of the first ships designed from the ground up as an aircraft carrier rather than converted from some other type of ship. The Yorktown had three catapults to speed up aircraft launches, fuel capacity to service the ship, and 85 planes plus quarters for 3,000 crewmen. During the Battle of Midway, the Yorktown scored a decisive victory against the Japanese, with the help of the U.S.S. Enterprise and the U.S.S. Hornet that set the tone for the war and from which the Japanese were never able to recover. For the heroic sacrifices made by her soldiers in this battle, the Yorktown earned three battle stars.
