I love this item. We just gave this to our son for his 4th birthday and he loves it. He really likes the pet pad game and drawing the letters to make the monkey do different things. He laughs at all of them. I love that he is learning while playing and I will sit with him and go through the games with him. It didn't take him very long to figure out how to use it either. My parents gave him the Mr. Pencil game and he seems to like that pretty well too. The built in camera is great. He has been taking pictures like crazy and having fun drawing on them.

One of the problems I had was when I first downloaded the apps the camera stopped working so I found out from someone else's review on another site how to fix it. I guess it's a common problem. If you have the problem you just:

Click on the leapfrog icon on your computer
Turn the leapster on and connect to the computer
When your child's icon pops up click go
In the upper right corner click on settings and then repair.

Other then that and the batteries not lasting it's a great product and learning tool. I will be investing in rechargeable batteries. The other suggestion I have is that the battery compartment can be hard to open so follow the instructions on that and use both thumbs and press downward. I struggled with it until I read that on the directions.

Overall though we love it.

LOVE LeapFrog Products BUT!!!

My children own tons of LeapFrog toys and games. We love that LeapFrog is educational but fun! That being said, we were really excited when Great Grandma bought our boys LeapFrog Leapsters for Christmas. We knew being a previous owner of the LeapPad 1, set can take a long time in the eyes of a little one... so we took the time to set up the toy in advance. WELL, it took up nearly 30 minutes to get the battery door off the back of the unit. I tried. My husband tried. It was ridiculous. We pulled and tugged. Nothing. It wasn't until we got a mini pocket knife keychain thing-a-ma-jig and slipped the knife straight down but lined up with the arrows were we able to get the doors open. I am glad that we took the time on Christmas Eve to play with this because our kids would have been gravely disappointed otherwise had they had to wait. Besides the door, I know the product will be worthwhile. I'll be sure to update my review if my opinion should change! LeapFrog, please fix the door!!! (And by the way, we did have two units so I don't think it was a defective product unless I was lucky enough to get two of them!)

This is a great gaming system for children 4+. Educational games but can get expensive. We have 3 boys so we buy the downloadable games since you can pay once and download it 3 times. (Keeps them from fighting over games!) It does go through batteries but we use rechargeable batteries. We do have to charge them almost every day but that is bc my boys love their games and have them on alot! I would buy the protection plan with it though. One of my sons touch screen quit working a month after we bought it but the others were fine! We had it exchanged no problem!
Oh and as for the battery door covers, they come off easily. They key is to press STRAIGHT down on the arrows and slide them off. :)

It's okay. I was super excited for my son, but I've already had issues with it acting properly and I've only had it for 2 weeks. The games that I have are somewhat too learning or educational. I don't mean too educational, but its not fun enough. I wouldn't even want to play those games if I was my son. He has Mr. Pencil and a Bubble Guppies game. They're not all that at all and I loved Leapfrog before this. Now, I'm not so sure!!

We have yet to get this thing working. We opened it for my 5-year old son but we cannot get the back off to put the batteries in and you have to download software onto your computer, create an accound, download apps, etc. before you can ever use it. We just haven't had the time to do that yet. He is very excited to use it and I'm sure he will love it once we get it started but it is a lot of work initially!

People may say its made cheap or not made for 4 yr olds but my 3yr old and 2 yr old play with it fine. It did have one problem and that was when the writing was a little off from where the stylus. BUT the direction to fix that problem where right in the manual or you can find it online.. Other then the my kids both play with it just fine no scratches, dents or breaks of any kind. I also like the fact that leapster has games for as young as 3 or it does grow with your kids knowledge.

We bought this for our 4 year old grandson. He loved it and played with it all the time. The first one quit working after about 1 month, replaced it and the touch screen completely quit working after about 18 months.... It was good while it lasted. Being a leap frog I really hoped it would last longer than that.

Our son received his last Christmas. He will turn 4 in march. He loves his explorer and his learning how the game works. I love I can buy him apps in French. I was afraid at first his game might brake, but we explain to him it was a very fragile toy and he had to be very careful. We almost never leave alone with the game, so we can monitor how long he plays with it. The only thing, I wish the leapster came with the AC adapter.
