Important note: Flex track only works well when attached to baseplates.

For my current display, my straight tracks are 4 studs away from the side of the baseplate. That doesn't leave enough room for me to fit a tunnel on one baseplate. So I needed to change the track offset just for that portion of the layout. I tried using curves, but two connected curves are only 31 studs long, and I needed them to be 32 studs long.

My solution was to use these flex track pieces to change the offset to 7 studs. Using 2x2 and 1x2 jumper plates, I was able to keep the flex tracks from moving while connected to a baseplate. The number of flex track pieces included in this set was the exact number I needed for each side of the tunnel.

Yes, flex track is loud, but when used properly, it doesn't cause derailments, noticeable slowdowns, or anything like that. It's definitely not a suitable replacement for straight or curved tracks, but that's not what they were made for. I would even argue that they should never be used at their full radius.

The only thing I don't like about this set is that you can't buy the straight tracks without buying flex tracks. Flex track is never used in large quantities, so it would be frustrating if I had to buy tons of these sets to accumulate straight tracks. If the two types of track were sold separately, I would give each a 5 star review.

PS – Lego, please make RC x-crosses.

I have many pieces of flexible track and find them very useful with my larger track designs.
They allow your normal straights and curves to bend to exactly what shape you want. It is VERY important to only use 1 or 2 flexi tracks joined together so that your engines dont lose traction.
I normally use 1 flexi part to 2 pieces of track and find I do not have any loss of traction.
I agree that track pieces should be included in Pick-a-brick and you shoule be able to order 1 piece at a time.

Comments about LEGO City Flexible Train Tracks (7499):

This item is as described. Since Lego sets come with minimal straight track this is the only way to buy more straight pieces. The flex track i used to dislike, but now find it convenient for hooking up track sections that require non-standard lengths.

Bring back the old track sets!

Comments about LEGO City Flexible Train Tracks (7499):

I think we can all agree when making a lego city or a lego layout where we plan on having a lot of trains straight track is the essential and hard to come by. Most Lego train sets come with no or very few straight track so we all come to this set. Lego track is very overpriced and I think the flexible track is not very useful, unrealistic, and looks bad. Now yes flexible can come in handy if you have a tiny spot to fill whether is a curved spot or a straight spot. But sell it separately. Flexible track does have its own set, but why doesn't straight track? I think a set with 8 straight track for $9.99 would be a life saver for those who need bulk quantities of straight track and don't need or want the flexible track. Also what ever happened to the old track sets. The double crossover set was amazing and was very popular to consumers, yet Lego discontinued it. Now to get it is $150+. Also the simple cross over track we saw in every era of track from 4.5v to 9v yet they decided not to make one in RC track form. What ever happened to the old Lego track days. I think if you just need extra track this might be a good set for you. But if you just need straight track in bulk quantities of it I can not recommend this to you.
