My son received this as a birthday present. Out of the box the elevation adjustment appeared to be broken (felt like stripped gears, wouldn't stay in place), which appears to be a common problem. However, after disassembling the mechanism, all the components were loose and needed to be tightened. A few turns here and there with screwdrivers and an Allen wrench, and it was remedied. The adjustments also seemed to get smoother with more use. Once the red dot scope was dialed in, it was surprisingly accurate. Finer adjustments through the big scope were mostly a matter of fudging here and there. I think this scope is great for what it is. I'm not into astronomy. It's a cool hobby, but I'm not willing to invest in quality equipment. That being said, this unit was good enough for me, my son, and a few adults to say "WOW!" looking at the moon during a cub scout meeting. Not a precision instrument, but good enough for casual use.

I bought this telescope for my science-loving brother's ninth birthday present. We were both really excited when it was opened. We read through the very confusing instructions and put it together. We went outside when it got dark only to get incredibly disappointed. The telescope's images were very blurry and we couldn't see much out of it. We brought it back inside and read through the instructions again, but my brother told me to go ahead and return it for another model, which I did. Also, the telescope tripod was okay, though it suddenly slid down as we were transporting it. The telescope was plastic, and I feared that if it was bumped into and fell, it wouldn't stand a chance.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Astro Gazer 700 Young Astronomer's Refractor Telescope:

we just bought it yesterday. I was fixing it and adjusting it late at night and I became very frustrated because it was fuzzy (full moon and couldn't make out anything) but after awhile I got the hang of it and was able to focus it. the moon showed up perfectly in great detail. a little disappointed that the stars still look like- stars but my child didn't mind. it excited her. and I looked into getting a Barlow x2 so I think overall for the price it was okay.

    Not a bad scope

    By JS

    from 'Merica

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Astro Gazer 700 Young Astronomer's Refractor Telescope:

To start our scope had no mechanical flaws. To address some that I read about this telescope: you must make sure set screws are backed off and use the x and y axis controls to move it. Otherwise yeah, it's gonna strip and/or randomly stray. That aside, the eyepieces are decent but I'd suggest some additional ones or maybe a 2x Barlow lense to use with the existing ones. What can you see with it? We can see craters on the moon pretty well with this little scope. My 8 year old loves it. Mars is just too small for the scope as it comes out of the box. It's bright at at a parent magnitude of -1.8 or something like that, but small so we can never get any detail. Jupiter is tough but not bad. Can easily make out the Galilean satellites (moons), and if the weather here is right you can tell there are two weather bands running across the planet. It's small, and takes some observation and patience, but you can see it. Saturn has been our highlight with this telescope. Not much detail, and it's small, but you can make out the planetary mass and the rings. It is all the same color, but you can tell the rings go around the object - the black space between rings and planets sides is fairly easy to discern this time of year. Overall? Had I read these reviews first I would have never bought it. But I'm glad we did. At 70mm objective lense it's not bad at collecting light, and a refraction scope is much easier to learn on for a child than a reflector type Newtonian scope where everything you do is inverse how it appears through the eyepiece. For the optics be better? Yeah they could be better...but for the price it's not bad. If you're looking for a whole lot more resolution out of a telescope you probably need to jump up to the 6 inch objective lens range. Just remember planets will be small unless you get a larger scope or pick up some new eyepieces or a Barlow 2x.

Bought this for our son's 10th birthday, brought it home and put it together, only to get to the point where you mount the telescope onto the tripod and find that it doesn't fit into the pre-shaped hole. Major disappointment

          Not worth the money

          By Anatayw

          from Houston, TX

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Astro Gazer 700 Young Astronomer's Refractor Telescope:

My son has been really getting into space and the planets, so I was thrilled when he received this for Christmas! However, that thrill was erased after setting it up.

It was easy to set up and the instructions were fine, however my first indication of a problem was when I aimed it and walked away. When I returned, the scope was pointed much lower than I'd left it. It appears that it doesn't hold the position even when everything is screwed tightly.

The second issue is obviously the biggest...I couldn't ever see anything! I tried switching the lenses and every adjustment I could, but no dice. I'm disappointed to have to return this. I'll just get my son a telescope from an educational outlet and skip the "toys".

We were super excited to get this for our son's 8th birthday. The unboxing was easy. We set it up and its just ok. Things look pretty much the same with or without the scope. Details are lost. We believe one of the eye pieces may have a hairline crack in it which distorts the view. The good thing was the tripod is very tall so not alot of hunching over.
