Ok, I had this telescope since November 2013 and just NOW, March 2014, figured this thing out. First off; set the Laser during the day. I focused the telescope (removing the entire Black Plastic Cover in the front of the Tube) on a back yard play set. Using a black piece of electronic tape to mark an "X" on a item on the play set. I found my mark thru the eye piece then turned on the laser all the way to the end (the most forward position of the laser switch). Right off the back I noticed the laser was WAAAAYYYYY off the mark so using the knobs on the laser (there's two; one for up and down the other for left and right) I adjusted the Laser to the black X on my play set.

My next step was to wait until night fall and look up at the moon using the laser pointer. Once the pointer was on the moon I went to the eye piece and saw the moon as if it was in front of my face. The smaller lens 9.7 mm is the better one to scan the surface of the moon while the 26mm is for looking at the entire moon.

WHY (4) Stars??? Well while the moon is a cool thing to look at with my daughters at night we can only see WHITE SPECS when it comes to looking at other planets like Venus and so on. It's also shaky TRUST ME once you have it focus you BETTER look quick or this telescope will move away slowly. I purchased a TEL VUE 1.25 Barlow (2x) tube but it didn't help looking at other planets...they still look like WHITE speckles. I will purchase stronger eye pieces and think we will be good to go.

My mother purchased this telescope for my 8 year-old son. No, I would not have made the purchase myself, but since it was a gift I wasn't going to complain. Initially I didn't expect much from a toy store telescope. However, I was surprised with the product.

In no way can an elementary school kid use the scope on her/his own. And even for an adult it requires some knowledge of telescopes. I would recommend that you give your kids something to play with while you're spotting and focussing on objects. At first it will take some practice focusing on objects.

On the first night, my wife and I used the telescope to get familiarized with it. Also, the spotting scope does not come calibrated. Save yourself some headaches and calibrate it by spotting a tree or any large object before aiming at the sky. This will make spotting smaller objects in the sky a breeze.

The following night, after some practice, we let the kids view through the scope. On a lit suburban street we had no problem spotting large craters on the moon (mostly along the rim of the moon) and Jupiter with 5 of its moons. Even with the entry level eye pieces that came with the scope, we were able to subtly see the stripes on Jupiter's atmosphere. Perhaps, in better darkness, the colors would look better.

The largest drawbacks were that the adjustment knobs hit the scope and with no counter balance, the scope shakes a lot with moderate winds.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Astro Nova Reflector Telescope:

My seven year old son received this for is seventh birthday. (not recommended) My mother said she found it in a clearance bin for $70. For the price it's as good a telescope as I have seen. As telescopes go, "longer is stronger, and wider is brighter." This thing has a bright, clear image. We've had it for three nights now, and it has been overcast to the point where we haven't really been able to see anything celestial. I can, however, clearly see ice crystals on tree leaves 200 yards away.
The red dot "finder" works great. It takes about five minutes to adjust it, but once it's on, it makes getting the telescope on target a snap.

My big test will be to see if I can see the rings of Saturn. I've seen them through much smaller telescopes, so if I can't see them with this one, I am going to be very disappointed.

For me, I'm not expecting to discover new planets or galaxies. It's all about spending time with the kids. This is good for that, although it doesn't look like it could survive being knocked over, so if your kids are like mine, it requires constant supervision.
