This kit takes a while to see results, but be patient. We waited about a week or so and you could barely see the little guys but they were there. At first they were just a tiny spec and then they grew and grew. We had about three or four that were pretty good size, then went to two, then one day the other one was gone. ?? don't know what happened, we didn't see him dead or anything.. it was just gone! I know they said that they eat each other, but I don't know how to explain the big one being gone. All in all, it was super cool though! We are planning on buying another kit to try again! I will say that we kept the aquarium under a lamp for most of the day to keep it as warm as possible.. that may have helped them grow.

While this kit states it includes triop eggs, what we hatched is definitely not. We were able to hatch only two animals; BOTH of which were fairy shrimp. One died relatively quickly. There is no guarantee included with buying this kit. The tank is small, and not stable; it is very easy to tip. The included white sand looks pretty when you add it to the tank. However, as soon as you add the eggs and the plant matter they are mixed with, say goodbye to a clean looking tank. Debris floats at the top, sticks to the sides of the tank, and the heavier pieces sink to the bottom. There is no way to clean up the mess.
The instructions for the pelleted food state to crush the pellet before adding it to the tank. This is an impossible task. The food is very hard and requires an adult and hammer to break it.

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Do & Discover Prehistoric Sea Monsters Kit:

I got this for my kids, this Christmas, and its been over a week and the triops haven't hatched. Well, I sort of had to shake the aquarium for some of the eggs to float down. And putting the sand in first is a bad idea. When I put in the water, some sand moved in a hump to the side. But don't put the sand in last because the sand may dissolve in the water! HOWEVER: I don't have my triops in good sunlight, so that may be a problem. Sometimes I want to throw the whole kit away, but I don't want to end a "life".

Prehistoric sea monters

Comments about Toys R Us 1001325 Edu Science Do & Discover Prehistoric Sea Monsters Kit:

Have to leave a review after all the ones I just read. I have had no problems with my kit. Got appropriate water at correct temp ( I just microwaved it and used candy thermometer) poured over sand then let settle a while. Used q-tip to wipe bubbles from inside tank for better vision. Then added 1/3 egg mixture and stirred very gently getting everything wet. Placed under desk lamp keeping somewhat warm (80 degrees). My hopes were not high, but my daughter and I found 5 triops and 1 fairy shrimp 3 days later. Used a fingernail to split up a food pellet into 3 pieces and put them in. Some pieces floated, some sank. Anyway, they are doing fine. I suggest a black piece of construction paper taped to back of container to make visibility better as they are pretty tiny. Great for children!!!

I bought these for my 9 year old daughter who loves science and animals. She had big expectations for these but I have to admit mine were not so high. Well, she was right and I was wrong. The triops are tiny specs of white by day 2 or 3 but after a week they were literally the size of a quarter! The best part (for my daughter) was that it seems that they eat eachother!!! These are really easy and really fun. Highly recommended for kids who love science or just want to be amazed that they can hatch an ancient species.

I bought this kit and tried to hatch the eggs. I waited. One day, nothing (obviously). One week, nothing. I was curious about what was happening. One month later, NOTHING. I freezes the eggs like it says. NOTHING. I used the second batch. NOTHING. I have bought this kit around 1 year ago. 1 YEAR LATER is me sitting at my laptop writing this COMMENT. I was very disappointed. I contacted the company they said "Sorry, you can re-buy a batch for an overpriced price. I

I've had sea monkeys twice before, and I wanted to switch it up a bit and try for triops. I bought this kit and about four days after I started, one single brine shrimp (sea monkey) emerges. While it is nice to have a single active, healthy SOMETHING, this is not what I paid for. What a joke. Don't get this product unless you want this specific tank and want a shot at maybe having a sea monkey.

Not really sure what to think. My 8 year old was very excited to spend his own money on this kit. I was less excited when I read the instructions and realized it's not as easy as the box says it will be. I.E. special water, special temperature etc. I am an experienced aquarium keeper but was not prepared for these creatures to be so needy. And, just how, do you keep the water clean when they're so tiny? It doesn't tell you. And, the expected life span is only around one month.

However, now that they've hatched and I've done all my own research on care for Triops...they're not even triops! They are Fairy Shrimp... One lone triops and tons of fairy shrimp. These are commonly marketed as the new freshwater Sea Monkeys, but my son specifically wanted Triops. Now what?
