This set is definitely the highpoint of the Hobbit subline; Lego have really knocked it out of the park with this one. Not only is this one of the most iconic locations in both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, they have managed to load the set with loads of neat little features. The figures are great as usual; you get Bilbo, Gandalf and a whole four of the dwarfs, all nicely detailed and with accessories. I was particularly taken with Bombur, who has an extra plastic 'belly' attached to his beard piece, to make him just that little bit tubbier than the other figures. Bag End itself is a fantastic build, both fun and nicely challenging to build. The way in which the round doorway and windows are built up is interesting, and I like that the top of the hill is easily removable for access to the interior. The interior itself is full of furniture and accessories; there's plenty of food and drink, a selection of maps, and more. I particularly liked that they included the Red Book of Westmarch on Bilbo's writing table, for if you're presenting Bag End in the Lord of the Rings era. The care that has gone into this set is shown by the fact that the door even has Gandalf's 'burglar's mark' scratched into it; this is a great playset and a must-have for any Middle-Earth fan.

It seemed weird to me that this set used multiple green smaller plates with nothing underneath as a "placemat" as is found in other sets. So when you pick up this finished product it's like holding a cracked egg in your hand and trying to not let the mess out of your hands. This set should have come with a base plate, even specially curved to accommodate for this set so when it is moved it's not going to break apart. I find that frustrating as Lego is usually much better about such attention to details. My 10 year old son built it, while I worked on another set nearby. He did build it correctly (as I thought the fault was with him at first) but that was not the case. It's a very detailed, amazing set otherwise and a nice change of pace from the usual forms of houses or buildings but it seems that is really a downside to this. If your not planning on moving it from where it's at, no problem.

"Not a dirty hole filled with worms"

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

By far the most detailed accurate beautiful lego set ever made ! You need to own this beautiful set. I got it for my birthday a while back and was so pleased. Pros, 6 Minifigures Lots of food Removable roof Cons, There is not much to play with once its built but dang it looks good, they even got the mark on the door. There needs to be a pipe and a mailbox and it could have been bigger but all those are forgivable. BAGEND IS EPIC !

I love this set! Sweet!

By Bubbs104

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

My mom bought me this set at Toys R Us in Santa Maria. I spent the next few days playing with it and just enjoying it. This set is worth having for the two dwarfs Bofur & Bombur. It's also cool because it comes with Gandalf the grey and the first two dwarfs to arrive at Bilbo's door Dwalin & Balin. I love the little pieces of food it comes with like the sausage, the bread, and the giant pretzel. I've watched all three of "The Hobbit" films and loved em. I liked the "unexpected gathering" scene because it always made me very hungrey. So to all you LEGO fans who read this I hope you really enjoy this set. By the way be sure to check out all the other Hobbit and Lord of the Rings sets.

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

This is a great set that when built seems larger then indicated by online pictures, the box does it justice but the pictures don't. It gets even bigger when you combined it with the two related sets 79015 Witch King Battle and 79011 Dul Guldur Ambush. It I had to criticize it my main point would be how loosely the hanging cage sticks to the top of the tower.

I ended up buying 2 of these to create a bigger more spacious Bag End. I also added pieces from Pick A Brick on Lego.com

Perfect for any Hobbit or LoTR fan!

Lots of food accessories that you don't normally get.

This set is rare and I'm glad I got it before it got retired!

          I'm Surrounded by Dwarves

          By Teebo1000

          from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

The set which is featured in the beginning of the Hobbit trilogy. A major set which includes 6 essential minifigures: Gandalf, Bilbo, Balin, Dwalin, Bofur and Bombur. As always I'll review the minifigures first. Gandalf the Grey: Your regular Gandalf the Grey with his hat, cape and staff. This version doesn't come with his sword - Glamdring. Bilbo Baggins: An exclusive version of the Hobbit. Bilbo comes in his Shire attire featuring a beige shirt and braces holding up his trousers. He has a double sided face with a happy expression on one side and a sad expression on the other. Balin: This version of Balin is exclusive to this set. He wears a red cape and comes has a large white beard. His face has a happy and an angry expression. His accessory is a sword. Dwalin: This version of Dwalin is exclusive. Dwalin wears a moth green cape with only one hole and his head is very detailed and features tatoos on the back. He comes with a large warhammer and a dagger. Bofur: Bofur is exclusive to this set. His trademark hat is unique for his figure and has a rubbery texture. It is very well detailed. Bofur wears a brown cape and his weapon is a pickaxe. His face has a happy and a furious expression. Bombur: Bombur is exclusive to this set along with his brother Bofur. Bombur's beardpiece is larger than other dwarves giving him a tubby appearance as he was the fattest in the company. Bombur has a happy and an excited face. His accessories are a pot and a sausage. Now for Bag End itself. On the exterior of the set is a large fence along with a gate at the far right. In Bilbo's garden are many flowers, a shrub, a carrot patch, his bench and a basket containing carrots and an apple. Just above the door is a lantern. Bilbo's door features the dwarvish rune drawn on by Gandalf. On the 'roof' is a chimney along with a small tree and some vegetation. The roof can be lifted off to allow you to play inside. Now for the interior. Just next to the door is a broom and small kitchen area with a hearth and some utensils. Also next to the door is a shelf with coloured jars and Bilbo's sword - Sting. There is a chest as well containing a shovel. Bilbo's collection of maps (featuring Erebor, the Shire and Mirkwood) are scattered across the floor and near these is a small barrel which contains an apple. At the far end of the house is a large window and Bilbo's red book with a quill and ink bottle. Adjacent to this is a letter and bottle. Next is the dining table with six stools for each character. On the table there is a variety of food and drinks for the Dwarves. There is a yellow plate at each end containing green grapes, red cherries and chicken legs. In the middle is a loaf of bread and a pretzel along with 2 chalices and a bottle. Pros: The house, minifigures, accessories, detail Cons: Stickers Overall this was an excellent set which contained both rare minifigures and a large variety of food items.
