This set is definitely the highpoint of the Hobbit subline; Lego have really knocked it out of the park with this one. Not only is this one of the most iconic locations in both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings, they have managed to load the set with loads of neat little features. The figures are great as usual; you get Bilbo, Gandalf and a whole four of the dwarfs, all nicely detailed and with accessories. I was particularly taken with Bombur, who has an extra plastic 'belly' attached to his beard piece, to make him just that little bit tubbier than the other figures. Bag End itself is a fantastic build, both fun and nicely challenging to build. The way in which the round doorway and windows are built up is interesting, and I like that the top of the hill is easily removable for access to the interior. The interior itself is full of furniture and accessories; there's plenty of food and drink, a selection of maps, and more. I particularly liked that they included the Red Book of Westmarch on Bilbo's writing table, for if you're presenting Bag End in the Lord of the Rings era. The care that has gone into this set is shown by the fact that the door even has Gandalf's 'burglar's mark' scratched into it; this is a great playset and a must-have for any Middle-Earth fan.

My son wanted this more to fill out the dwarves than to get the item itself. After he started playing with it he looked at it more as a "base" for his hobbits and dwarves. It is very sturdy with a lot of extra bits (food, picks, axe, etc...) the price was a bit steep. Toys R Us did not set the MSP.

Got this set for my birth day and was very pleased. Took me a while to put together which was fun. The detail was so accurate for the outside but I added a mail box. I wish the interior was bigger though. The Figures were great too. A great set !

This Set is just so Awesome!!!

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

This is an AMAZING set!!! Even though it may not have the functions, the look and display is great. I love how they got the doors and windows rounded. All of the grass, trees, and bushes really make it look like it is built in the ground. The minifigures, Bilbo, Dwalin, Balin, Bofur, Bombur and Gandalf are all great minifigs. The way Bombur was done is quite a genius idea, with the fat stomach built in with the beard. The inside of Bag End has a table with six chairs, shelves, Bilbo's book in a stand, and a stove with pans and pots. This is an incredible set and I highly recommend this set to all Hobbit and LOTR fans.

    Bag End

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

This set is very cool and is probably my favorite set of the middle earth line. It can be used for both the Hobbit and the Lord of the Rings. The figures are great. You get Bilbo Baggins in an exclusive print. Dwalin and Balin who both also come in the Lonely mountain set with different prints. Bofur and Bombur are exclusive to this set and you also get Gandalf the Grey which is the same as all the other Gandalf the Grey figures. Onto the main set: This model is accessories heavy and that is very cool. You get a dining table and alot food elements. there is the book where Bilbo writes his story. There is also the map of Middle earth showing the Shire, Mirkwood, and the Lonely mountain. In the front of the model there is also a garden in the front of the model where Bilbo grows his veggies. Overall I think this set is fantastic and If your interested in the LOTR and Hobbit line this is a must. Also since the last wave of the Hobbit sets are comming out this set will eventually be discontinued. So pick it up as soon as you can you wont regret it. The build is fun and the minifigs don't disappoint

This is an awesome set. you get a boring Gandalf, bilbo shire. you get dwalin which his cape has only one hole. bofur is cool for his hat. Balin is my favorite dwarf and he looks like santa. bomber is funny because of his fat mold. The outside is cool and has a printed piece. Inside is cool and has lots of food. I give this set an A+

    That'll be the door.

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

So I'm a big fan of the Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, and this was my first set to get in the collection, and it was well worth $50, just not $60. However, playability and value helps it out. BAG END: The entire set is made up solely of Bilbo Baggins' home in the Shire. It consists of the front, part of the inside, and the top (roof). The outside is mainly Bilbo's garden, which has some carrot stalks sticking out of the ground and a bucket full of vegetables. The yard is surrounded by a brickbuilt wooden fence and gate; unfortunately stickers are involved here. The outside of the house itself has a lot of special windows with flowers on the outside, and also a round, green door (printed! yay) with a gold doorknob and the mark that Gandalf puts in the corner. The roof/top of the house has a rounded, built-up look to it, and at the very top there is an apple tree. A chimney also sits on the top, and travels down to the inside to be the fireplace. On the inside, there is the fireplace, a table with six stools to sit on, as well as some shelves and a place for Bilbo's book to sit. The room is full of props and details, including some mugs and pots, bowls, a broom, a LOT of various foods including grapes, bread, chicken legs, sausages, apples, carrots, etc. There is also Bilbo's book (stickers again), Sting the sword, the Ring, and an envelope. Overall, this is a GREAT house that was worth about ten bucks less than the price it is, but LEGO has put the price to piece thing behind since about three years ago, so it's nothing new. MINIFIGURES: -Bilbo Baggins: Bilbo is a seperate variation from his adventuring clothes, wearing short brown legs and a striped tan shirt with suspenders. Basically, the standard Shire clothing. He has two faces, one smiling and one worried (probably about his poor house being wrecked by dwarves). His hair is the new, curly mold for all the hobbits in a sandy color. -Gandalf: Gandalf is nothing exclusive, but still a great minifigure and another way to get him. He has gray legs, a robed torso with a gray cape, and a gray pointed hat. After all, he is Gandalf the Gray. His head has bushy eyebrows and a smile, and is mostly covered by his special gray beard. He comes with a staff as well. -Balin: One of four dwarves in the set. He has a very Santa Claus look to him, and like all the others, is very movie accurate. He has short black legs, a dark red torso with a big black belt, and a maroon cape. He has two aged faces, one smiling and one angry. He has a white piece that slides over his head to be hair and a beard. He comes with a short sword. -Dwalin: Dwalin has short gray legs and a light green torso with bare arms. He has a greenish copper cape and a tough-looking expression. He is bald with a beard piece going all around his lower head. He comes with a brick built battle hammer. -Bofur: Bofur has short brown legs and an orangish tan torso with a brown cape. He has two faces with a printed beard, one smiling and one angry. He has a special rubber winter hat. He comes armed with a pickaxe. -Bombur: Bombur has short brown legs and a light green torso, but it is covered by a piece that makes up his round belly, bear, and hair with a bald spot. His face is mostly hidden, but it has a smiling face and an even bigger smiling face. He comes with a small knife and a ladle. OVERALL: This set is very satisfying and all the dwarves in it are exclusive, plus this version of Bilbo. The set goes great with Gandalf Arrives, so you can also get the Shire version of Frodo. A little less expensive would have been nice, but ultimately its worth it.

Great set for any Middle Earth fan

      By LostStar

      from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

This set is a lovely piece for any fan of Middle Earth. It is great fun to build, and looks wonderful, with loads of details. Building this set was great fun. You also get a nice selection of minifigures with the set. There are some lovely details in there - such as as copy of 'There and Back Again, a Hobbits tale' (although a little preemptive at this point in the story!), the rune marking on the door, copies of maps of Middle Earth. Things that a fan will appreciate! You also get a whole lot of food, which is always fun! There are a couple of things which niggled in the set though. Firstly, that I had a lot of trouble with the main round window. It looks great in theory - a really nice bit of LEGO design, but mine rattles around in the arch frame, so you end up with a couple of gaps either side. It's not too bad once it is in place in the set - but it did hold up my building a while as I wondered what I had done wrong! After a quick Google, I think this was an issue with some of these sets where the wrong size arch was included so this may not be an issue for everyone. The other niggle is that the back of the door looks pretty poor compared to the rest of the inside. It's a shame as the detail inside the Hobbit hole is lovely, but then you have this rather messy looking door reverse. I may try covering it with some plain green bricks to improve the look. Finally, be warned that you should not pick this model up by the roof. I did, and it led to quite a few parts going everywhere! The whole set is pretty fragile, so be warned if it’s out for play and not display! The fence panels are also pretty prone to coming off. All in all, it is well worth getting this set. It's a good, fun build and will look great next to all your other Tolkien memorabilia!

I am a huge fan of The Hobbit and I love this Lego set. It's a great addition to my collection. Legos are always fun with detailed instructions and easy to put together for kids of all ages and this is no exception. Although I do think that the price for Legos in general are a bit high (they are just little pieces of plastic after all), I would definitely recommend this product.

Comments about LEGO The Hobbit An Unexpected Gathering (79003):

This truly is one of the best Castle/Lord of the Rings/Hobbit themed sets in a long time, possibly since the Medieval Market Village set from a few years ago. Not your average open scene type of set like other recent sets that merely try to replicate a single scene from a movie with not much construction, this set allows you to build a complete set, with some wonderful details on the landscape and architecture and a wealth of furnishings within the interior of the home. Great details such as Bilbo's writing desk complete with book and ink bottle, a full feast fit for a king decorating the table, and maps taken directly from the movies and books strewn about the floor. The minifigures included with this set are among the best for the Hobbit line, but I might be biased since it includes some of my favorite dwarves from the movie: Dwalin, Bifur, and Balin.

The only drawback is the fact that it requires the application of decals to several pieces. I would prefer for the LEGO bricks to be printed, but I suppose they do this for the purpose of reducing costs, which I'm okay with.

I had enormous fun putting the set together, and it is such a great LEGO set that I display it proudly among my collection. I highly recommend this set. If you only buy one LEGO set this year, let it be this one.
