My Diaper Champ is actually second-hand and it did not smell when I got it. (I gave it a lysol bath anyway.) This works and stays clean. I bag each used diaper in a newspaper bag then tie a knot and put it in the Diaper Champ. For a smelly diaper, I'll then double the bag over and tie another knot so it's double wrapped. I've found that keeps the odor down significantly vs. not bagging the diapers at all. Dropping wet/dirty diapers directly into it without wrapping could smear germs along the sliding canister and that could get annoying to clean. I don't bother with a liner bag (i.e., plastic grocery sack), since I am wrapping as I go. But a liner bag would make emptying it a little faster and easier. This is an extremely economincal diaper pail vs. one that requires special refills. One of my neighbors uses a Diaper Champ to hold the used baggies from walking her dog until trash day.

After 3 kids I've learned a few things about diaper pails.

First, none of them contain the smell if they hold "too many" diapers. Sure, I use to complain about having to change the trash bag so often - but the fact is, too much poop in ANY can is going to stink!

Second - all plastic pails will eventually absorb the poop smell, unless you prevent that.

Third - your 13gallon trash bags bought in bulk from Costco/Sam's Club, will also not help contain the smell because the plastic is thinner.

SO - we are now using this pail virtually smell free with our 2 1/2 yr old twin boys (whose poops reek!), and this is what we do:
A) Use Brand name Odor block 13 gallon Trash Bags

B) Put each poop diaper inside a scented diaper disposal bag (from Babies R Us) and tie before placing in can

C) When the can is full - Don't shove them down - change the bag! Less is more - if you get my drift.

After 3 kids our Diaper Champ still worked like new. Just used regular trash bags and never had a problem with the smell. We buy this for friends having babies and so far everyone has loved it. No expensive refill cartridges to purchase.

Easy to use but does not contain the smell. My 1 yr old room stinks, we have it for about 2 weeks because we were tired of buying refills for the genie, is not worth of the money. We are going back to the genie.

Looks nice. Can use regular grocery bags in it. I purchase a large box of the inexpensive ziplock plastic bags, and put each diaper in one of those. Then place the diaper in the pail and close the lid. When it is full, open the pail and pull out the grocery bag. Have done this with all three kids and it helps contain that diaper trashcan smell that all of us parents are fully aware of.

We've had this for 2.5 years. It can use regular kitchen bags. It contains the smell very well if you keep the top closed, but the inside smells horrendous even with occasional bleach cleaning. Point being, it contains the smell inside as it is supposed to. Swapping out the bag is a stinky experience. We will start fresh with a new one for #2.

Does not contain smell. Every time I open it it smells so bad it makes us sick. Plus after a few diapers are in there you have to shake the thing to get the diaper down and be able to open and close it again.
