When I found out that one of these would be headed our way (I'm a 2013 Step2 Test Drive Blogger, and they sent me one for review), the reaction here at Rock Father HQ was mixed. We already had a kitchen for the girls - one that's served us well since Addie (now 4) first received it as a Christmas gift in Year Two. It's been used daily ever since, and Little Finley (15 months) had taken to it as well, and that raised questions: What would happen if a newer version of a beloved toy arrived here? Would it be viewed as a replacement? What would the girls think if we took one away... since space for two kitchens is not an option? What would set it apart?

The big answer: Contemporary features and more room for growth.

Where our first, smaller kitchen looks and feels more like a toy for toddlers, this new kitchen from Step2 expands upon it with it's size and modern features that reflect Mom and Dad's real-life kitchen. These are things that kids notice... like the recycling bin and reusable shopping bag. A lot of things say "packed with features," but I'm calling this one for actually being packed with features. Here's some of what this kitchen has to offer...

Features:

Microwave
Refrigerator
Oven (with sound)
Stove with two burners (one has lights & sound)
Coffee Pot with "Coffee Pods"
Recycling Bin
Reusable "green" shopping bag
Chalkboard
2 Storage Bins
Sink with moving knobs and faucet
Phone (with sound)
Clock with movable hands
Dish Cabinets with see-through doors
Hooks for utensils
Accessory Kit: Pots & Pans, Dishes, Utensils, Food, Pot Holder, Salt & Pepper Grinders and more

In talking "modern" and "contemporary," the biggest hit on this kitchen is the coffee maker - undoubtedly inspired by Keurig and the K-cup system (which Daddy uses several times a day here at HQ). In addition to having a single-serving coffee pot, there's a nice area above for storage of the three included "coffee pods."

Being that we're already big Step2 fans here, and having purchased many of their products aside from the ones we get to enjoy as a part of my gig as a 2013 Test Drive Blogger, it's usually hard to decide on a final rating. But this is an exception in that my highest rating is bestowed upon products that I can't think of a way to make any better. With all the features, quality, and fun packed into the Step2 Lil' Chef's Gourmet Kitchen, there's no way for me to avoid giving this a full-on five-star rating. Rock Father-Approved!

While this kitchen is adorable, it is a pain to put together. The press pieces don't work and break, so I will have to hot glue the chalk board on. The oven door came attached and is bent, and will not close which irritates me to no end. Hoping they will fix this. Was hoping to surprise my daughter in the morning for her birthday but looks like that may not happen. We kept hoping it would stay shut after it was built but unless I tape it shut it's wide open. My daughter will simply use it as a step as she can't sue it as an oven....

Comments about Step2 Lil' Chef's Gourmet Kitchen - Pink:

I first saw this kitchen model in the store and fell in love with it. So for my daughter's 2nd birthday I thought it would be perfect. .I went online to read the reviews to fully decide on whether to order it or not. But I noticed many complains about the directions of installation , the long hours of assembly, the lack of holes in the actual plastic and that you have to use a drill... Other complaints were too many batteries including the oven button keys that requires 3 round 1.5v batteries that don't come included.. Some people said the cuppard stays crooked and the oven door doesn't shut.
So I searched for another kitchen for 2 weeks and in the end I decided to buy it anyways because I did notice that many of the buyers after complaining said the kitchen was worth it and their child loved it. So I ordered it to be shipped and was charged a $15 extra because it was a heavy item. And was emailed an estimated 3 week wait for arrival, so I said ok more negativity..
To my suprise the kitchen arrived in 2 days on my daughter's birthday and the $15 surcharge was not on the bill. So the next morning I got my screw driver and had my 11 year old help me assemble the kitchen... It took us only an hour and half to put it together without a drill.. I think the manufacturer really cares and reads people reviews and complaints and fixed all the issues that I was waiting to tackle in the product.. The cuppard came assembled and straight. The oven door shuts perfectly and the odd batteries came included.. I had to make the holes with the screw driver in many spots, otherwise if I had used a drill, the assembly would have taken me less than an hour and a half.. I also needed to put batteries in the phone and the range hood that makes bubbling and sizzling sounds. Overall my experience was better than I thought. This kitchen is so cute and was worth it all.. My daughter loves it and everyone who has seen it loved it, even the adults.. I would highly recommend buying without hesitation and so I gave it 5stars because it really has many imaginative things to it...

We gave this kitchen to our two-year-old granddaughter as a birthday present. She loves it. Her big brothers even like playing with her and her kitchen. They especially like the bubbling and sizzling pan and pot. She loves making tea, coffee, and hot chocolate with the set that is like her parents. She loves the pepper and salt shakers that twist like real ones.

Comments about Step2 Lil' Chef's Gourmet Kitchen - Pink:

I spent a long time reading the reviews on every single kitchen before making a purchase. I'm very happy with the choice we made. I love the pink and the different features. I purchased an extra set of play food to go with this kitchen. I don't think that's necessary if you are giving it to a one year old (like I was), but she does love all the food! The directions are all in picture form which is nice, but also tricky because there's no words. It probably took my Dad about an hour to put together for my daughter. I would purchase this again.

I was very excited to see new Step2 colors! I feel like this is finally up with the times. The colors are adorable and it has a lot of great features. This kitchen does not have pre-drilled screw holes but it does have indents where the screws are supposed to be and the plastic is soft so it doesn't take any effort to screw them in. On the chalk board and the clock you're supposed to "push" in little black tacks, I could only get 2 of the 5 to go in all the way. I got the rest in as far as they would go and I cut off the excess sticking out with a knife and it looks fine. I put it together in about an hour, but the instructions were hardly helpful. I used the pictures on the box most of the time. Overall, this is sturdy and I am pleased with it!

I bought this Kitchen set for my 3 girls ages 9, 4 and 3 for xmas and they love it. Its very interactive and you get tons of pieces that comes with the kitchen where kids will have endless fun. Only down side was having to screw the nails into the plastic to hold the big pieces together which was quiet difficult you really have to put some muscle into it. Instruction sheet could have been better. Other than that the set is quiet worth the hard work!

When I saw the Lil Chef Gourmet Kitchen, I knew I had to get it for my curious 2.4 year old granddaughter. She loves it!! When she gets up in the morning, the first thing she wants to do is to cook. I love the realistic sounds the stove makes. The cons are length of time, and the instructions were had to find. There was no indication that instructions were included. Also, you have to search the sheets for the continuation of the instructions. My husband and I thought all we had to do was just snap it into place. When it started falling apart, we knew there had to be instructions somewhere. When we found the instruction booklet, which was in the bag with the dishes, we had to put it together all over again this time inserting the screws. It took us over three hours.

The kitchen is just what I expected when I ordered it. It was pretty easy to assemble and my daughter loves it. My only complaint would be that the toy requires three 1.5 volt disc-shaped batteries, which are difficult to find. I would recommend that the manufacturer go with a more readily available type battery. Otherwise this is a great toy!
