OK. This review will primarily focus on the product itself, but at the end there will be a plea to Lego, echoed by many other reviewers, and I hope they take notice. Red Five In terms of ships in the Star Wars universe they don't come much more iconic than the X-wing. The build quality is as you have come to expect from Lego: strong and sturdy. It is difficult to hold as an adult with the wings locked in attack position, so a youngster will have problems (as a UCS model this is not unusual, however). The wings flap when not locked in classic 'X' position. There are some great detailing on this model: the attack computer which Luke looks through for targeting the exhaust port on the Death Star; the mechanism for opening the wings, the proportions and shape are near perfect; the exhausts and laser turrets are superb. I built this slowly over a week and it was great fun seeing it come together. I was not disappointed with the end product and how it will sit with my other UCS collections. General observations for Lego (1) Stickers Enough is enough. Please. I did not put the cockpit sticker on due to the complexity around its fixing and my suspicion that I would not have gotten it right. No UCS model should have stickers (with the notable exception of the information sheet). Your customers buy these largely for the challenge of the build (they are getting easier though), a return to youth and the genuine eye pleasing finished product. Stickers do not do any justice whatsoever. Part of the call of UCS models should be for the true collector. So why not print all of the pieces which you would otherwise require a sticker for? That would add a further level of quality to the UCS series and distinguish the models from the mainstream ones. I simply do not accept it is restricted by price implications. Lego, the least you should do is make a run of pre-printed cockpits and send these to buyers. The stickers being provided are wafer thin too. It just seems to feel to me that you are letting your standards slip on what is otherwise a superb product. The smaller stickers are hard to apply and does injustice to the final model. (2) Instruction booklet All UCS models should be one instruction book and spiral bound. The 2 or 3 booklet approach adds to the feel of corner cutting and cheapness on your flagship series, in my view. You ask for not insignificant sums for these models, so why not do them the justice they deserve? (3) Old UCS X wing Bit of a dilemma here for me. I am not a fan of re-releases even where these have been an improvement on the original. The original was not a '10' series but I do not think that is justification. These models should be unique. Will there now be a re-release of 10179? As much as I would like to see that, I simply don't think there should be without a radical overhaul or to correct a substantive design fault with the original. Both the B-wing and Kenobi's Jedi fighter have come under heavy criticism. Personally I like them both. Both are elegant and come together well, particularly the B-wing. I can understand the gripe on price for Kenobi's ship but actually when it's together it is aesthetically pleasing (ignoring the big R2!). The Internet rumour mill says the B-wing is being discontinued shortly due to lack of demand. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. However, there are so many quality ships to pick from, surely it requires a better choice next time? If it was up to me, your next one needs to be a big one (3000 plus pieces), no stickers, spiral bound instructions and truly iconic. Bobba's Slave I, for me, is the obvious choice. Great detail, great colours and a chance to produce something to challenge 10179 for collector dominance. I started this review saying it was going to be mainly about the X-wing but on reflection, it hasn't been. That should not detract from the ship itself which is truly magnificent. However, Lego please take note that frustrations are starting to creep in.

I'm a big fan of the Lego Star Wars series as a whole and have been really found of the UCS (having purchased four sets in the Star Wars series alone). However, I have to agree taking a shortcut on the cockpit was a real disappointment. The sticker is cheap and no matter how patient you are putting it on it will never look as good as a painted piece. I think it would be outstanding if Lego recalled the window. Honestly i've never been a fan of stickers because they do eventually fall off or dry out, plus they look cheap, especially on a great design like this X-Wing. Also a $200 dollar collectors set deserves better than stickers on a central component. I love the design and features but it's the little things that can really ruin or make a set!

Red Five X-Wing: Five Bricks

By SethB98

from Keller

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

I was pleasantly surprised with this set. As an avid collector of Star Wars sets, particularly Ultimate Collectors Series, this set was enjoyable all around. Displayability: 5 out of 5, best looking set I have on display, even greater than UCS Slave I in my opinion. Playability: 3 out of 5, not what this set is for, yet this attribute is stronger in this set than other UCS sets. Buildability: 4 out of 5, a joy to build, I took it slow on this one just to enjoy it! Not that many interesting components, however a cool mechanism to open wings. Stickers, gross. Definitely one of the most fun sets I have built in a while, looks great next to my UCS Tie Fighter. I would definitely buy again. LEGO did well with this set, just wish it did not have stickers. Stickers on "glass" piece are difficult to apply, not for younger ones. 5 out of 5

Great Model

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

This set has a great size to it. Looks amazing when build with no hard to build areas. The large size of this model is perfect. If you are wondering if you should get this if you already have any of the other x-wings the answer is yes. They simply do not compare. it is now my new favorite set.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

it's been a few years since I last bought a new lego-set but earlier this I started again building. I bought a few smaller sets to get started and then started looking for something bigger: my eye fell on this beauty. While I was unpacking i knew the set was gonna be huge and while building I found out how huge exactly; I was thrilled!!! overal a very nice build, certainly more than worth the money. If you're in doubt, I say go for this set!

Great Addition

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

I really enjoyed building this set. I am a huge Star Wars fan and so having the opportunity to build Red 5 was great. Lots of fun and challenging as well. I do have one issue and that is for these sets there are stickers rather than built pieces with the image already on them - not sure why LEGO does this, perhaps to save money, but that is by far the most challenging - placing the stickers on just right. Despite that, this is a great build either for a fan like myself, or a parent and child. A great addition to the star wars collector series for sure.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

I have been building since I was a little kid. But I haven't really bought any lego for many years until I purchased this one. This set is really astounding in it's appearance and nice for displaying. The building experience was great and one could sit the whole time from scratch without getting even the slightest bored of it. The model is also very accurate to the original X-wing from the movie with the targeting-computer, cockpit and all the details on the wings. Just be sure to follow the instructions carefully while building the inner structure. That was the most challenging part of this set. So what one can say about it? Great set! No more words needed!

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

This is an awesome model. It was so fun to build that I'm still sad the process is over... and its been over for about 3 months. Now that it's taken its place on its stand on my stereo speaker I find myself looking at it all the time. The details on the engine, the cockpit, and the wings are all very cool. I was, however, disappointed with the stickers. The sticker that goes over the transparent cockpit is impossible to apply without developing ugly bubbles underneath. I often consider taking off the sticker because it looks so bad (and I think I did the best one possibly can). I can't help but feel that LEGO, which is a company I absolutely love, could have done better in this respect.Their printing on other models and bricks is usually top notch that stickers just don't do the model justice. Otherwise it's an awesome model, and I highly recommend it. All the UCS models seem to be fantastic. Additionally, they seem to appreciate in value over the years, which I didn't notice.

Excellent use of my tax return

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

This set is spectacular! I thoroughly enjoyed building it, now I just need to find a suitable space to display it. There are only a few things that I would change if I had designed this model ( by the way I am graduating with a degree in mechanical engineering very soon if LEGO is hiring ). First, and many other reviews include this, would be having the stickers printed on the pieces, I am slightly a perfectionist and I struggled to be happy with how straight I was able to place the stickers. Second, a Luke figure should have been included, maybe even a limited edition, also R2-D2 should have a silver/chrome top not grey. Third, I wish the 5 red pieces indicating that this is in fact Red Five's X-wing not Wedge's should line up. The three closest to the engines could easily have moved up one peg. It also would have been nice if the targeting computer was able to easily move back out of the way since Luke didn't use it very much.

Almost perfect!

By Feeble

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

This is only my second UCS Lego set, so I have limited experience with larger sets, but I found the built to be easy to follow and enjoyable to build throughout. I built it in one sitting, and The final product looks very much like the "real thing" and it turned out to be larger than I expected. I only have a couple minor gripes. The first is that it uses stickers. In my opinion, UCS sets should not be using stickers. These sets are clearly aimed toward collectors for display, and stickers just don't last. My $55 Lego TIE Fighter (9492) came with a printed cockpit viewport, so why can't this set? However, I didn't bother putting the stickers on, and the X-wing still looks great, so it's not enough to sway my opinion of the set. My second gripe is that there are several pieces that should be a different color, considering the designer's admitted close attention to Red Five in the original film. A handful of parts are gray when they should have been white, or dark gray when they should have been gray. I'm sure the parts in question exist in those colors, so I'm not sure why he chose the colors he did for those parts. Artistic license, I guess. Again, this doesn't detract from what is a great looking X-wing. I'll probably just order the parts I want and mod the build. Overall, a fun build, and an excellent display piece, providing you have the shelf space.
