OK. This review will primarily focus on the product itself, but at the end there will be a plea to Lego, echoed by many other reviewers, and I hope they take notice. Red Five In terms of ships in the Star Wars universe they don't come much more iconic than the X-wing. The build quality is as you have come to expect from Lego: strong and sturdy. It is difficult to hold as an adult with the wings locked in attack position, so a youngster will have problems (as a UCS model this is not unusual, however). The wings flap when not locked in classic 'X' position. There are some great detailing on this model: the attack computer which Luke looks through for targeting the exhaust port on the Death Star; the mechanism for opening the wings, the proportions and shape are near perfect; the exhausts and laser turrets are superb. I built this slowly over a week and it was great fun seeing it come together. I was not disappointed with the end product and how it will sit with my other UCS collections. General observations for Lego (1) Stickers Enough is enough. Please. I did not put the cockpit sticker on due to the complexity around its fixing and my suspicion that I would not have gotten it right. No UCS model should have stickers (with the notable exception of the information sheet). Your customers buy these largely for the challenge of the build (they are getting easier though), a return to youth and the genuine eye pleasing finished product. Stickers do not do any justice whatsoever. Part of the call of UCS models should be for the true collector. So why not print all of the pieces which you would otherwise require a sticker for? That would add a further level of quality to the UCS series and distinguish the models from the mainstream ones. I simply do not accept it is restricted by price implications. Lego, the least you should do is make a run of pre-printed cockpits and send these to buyers. The stickers being provided are wafer thin too. It just seems to feel to me that you are letting your standards slip on what is otherwise a superb product. The smaller stickers are hard to apply and does injustice to the final model. (2) Instruction booklet All UCS models should be one instruction book and spiral bound. The 2 or 3 booklet approach adds to the feel of corner cutting and cheapness on your flagship series, in my view. You ask for not insignificant sums for these models, so why not do them the justice they deserve? (3) Old UCS X wing Bit of a dilemma here for me. I am not a fan of re-releases even where these have been an improvement on the original. The original was not a '10' series but I do not think that is justification. These models should be unique. Will there now be a re-release of 10179? As much as I would like to see that, I simply don't think there should be without a radical overhaul or to correct a substantive design fault with the original. Both the B-wing and Kenobi's Jedi fighter have come under heavy criticism. Personally I like them both. Both are elegant and come together well, particularly the B-wing. I can understand the gripe on price for Kenobi's ship but actually when it's together it is aesthetically pleasing (ignoring the big R2!). The Internet rumour mill says the B-wing is being discontinued shortly due to lack of demand. Whether that's true or not, I don't know. However, there are so many quality ships to pick from, surely it requires a better choice next time? If it was up to me, your next one needs to be a big one (3000 plus pieces), no stickers, spiral bound instructions and truly iconic. Bobba's Slave I, for me, is the obvious choice. Great detail, great colours and a chance to produce something to challenge 10179 for collector dominance. I started this review saying it was going to be mainly about the X-wing but on reflection, it hasn't been. That should not detract from the ship itself which is truly magnificent. However, Lego please take note that frustrations are starting to creep in.

I'm a big fan of the Lego Star Wars series as a whole and have been really found of the UCS (having purchased four sets in the Star Wars series alone). However, I have to agree taking a shortcut on the cockpit was a real disappointment. The sticker is cheap and no matter how patient you are putting it on it will never look as good as a painted piece. I think it would be outstanding if Lego recalled the window. Honestly i've never been a fan of stickers because they do eventually fall off or dry out, plus they look cheap, especially on a great design like this X-Wing. Also a $200 dollar collectors set deserves better than stickers on a central component. I love the design and features but it's the little things that can really ruin or make a set!

X Wing

By JonnyYeti

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

Nice and challenging to build and the finished product is massive! I love how the wing mechanism works. Only problem is the stickers for the windscreen and the wings are really hard to apply and there are no spares in the set for when you mess it up. I don't know how anybody can apply them without getting annoying bubbles which ruins the finished look a bit.

INCREDIBLE!!! (Except for the stickers...)

By Shadowfuze

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

I'll get the negative and bad out the way first: The stickers. Horrible and very stressful to apply. When paying £169 for a LEGO set you'd think it wouldn't have to have stickers. To be fair I don't think stickers should have ANY place on any LEGO set. The windscreen stickers on this set are painstakingly hard to apply - I was so worried about getting bubbles on the transparent wind-shield that I followed some advice I found on-line and, painstakingly, cut out the see through centre bits of the stickers, leaving only the window frame part of the sticker - I'm VERY glad I did this as it looks superb, but it took a while and was very difficult and stressful to apply! Even after around 10 hours of extremely fun building and an incredibly satisfying end product - I feel very strongly about how awful the stickers are. Anyway. Moving on! This was my first UCS LEGO set and it definitely won't be my last! I'm still in awe at how BIG (REALLY BIG!!) and detailed and incredible the finished set is! I love, love, love it!!! I took my time with the build, enjoying every moment of it and was very often amazed at the great techniques used, there were many parts of the ship that were built unlike any set I've built before. I'm somewhat bummed it's built now and almost want to do it again (but it will be no small feat to take this massive X-wing apart!). As a Star Wars fan, I'm so amazed at how great this X-Wing looks, so much great detail, I'll say again how huge it is, making it a spectacle to display. In short: The greatest LEGO set I've ever owned and built. Super fun build with lots of interesting features. HUGE!! Amazing detail and a must for any LEGO and Star Wars fan. Stand is pretty cool too. - bummer about the stickers, they are horrible, horrible, horrible. - Slightly sad that there is no Luke Skywalker mini figure.

My first purchase and an awesome one!

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

This was my first Lego purchase and I'm glad I made it. This is a large ship. It looks great and it's a blast to display from different angles. It was really fun building this to see how things are constructed and made to function. I just love the design behind making the wings open and close. I also like how the sides of the fuselage are sloped outward. However I do have a few gripes (in light of the high cost of this purchase). 1. It should have come with a Luke minifig as one will fit in the cockpit. The TIE fighter comes with a pilot, why not this one especially since this is Red Five that we're building. 2. The lower wings sag when closed. These could have been made thicker? If displaying it with the wings closed and this is an issue for you maybe a clip could be attached so it looks better? I display it with wings spread. 3. Pieces should be pre-printed. I have a F-40 that has a couple large pre-printed pieces so I know you can do it. I was able to place the canopy decals on pretty well. At least there is a second set of them.

One of the best sets I've built so far.

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

It has been almost 13 years since I last buildt a lego set, and I was really into Lego as a kid. I must say that building the X-Wing as a great way to get back into it, one my all time favorite sets. As a massive fan of the Star Wars franchise I loved the attention to detail in this set, and I really admire the people who designed this set. So what's good about this set? +Size (It's massive, sadly I couldn't fit it on any of the shelfs in my office). +Detail, especially the engines and weapons +Ability to open and close the wings. Cons -Stickers! (I had no problem applying them to the bricks but I would've preffered printed bricks.

Now I need bigger shelf

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

It was interesting building experience. I decided to build it for a few days and enjoy it, instead of building it quickly. Since it is not very playable, but it is made for building and watching it. And even though that there are dimensions on the box I was surprised by the size and weight.

Excellent model, minus the stickers

By CtrlAltDstry

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

Ever since I saw A New Hope as a kid I've wanted an X-Wing for my shelf, it's just so iconic and brings back such fond childhood memories and daydreams. 7140 was the last X-Wing I owned before 10240, so a good decade and some change has passed since I've built one, and the engineering and detailing has seen enormous improvement. The mechanism for opening and closing the s-foils is seamless and incredibly clever, the nose of the model does a solid job of replicating the ship's trademark spearhead, and the cannon construction is both enjoyable and detailed. Really the only complaint I have is that the designer (or TLG management) decided to use 4 stickers instead of just printing the canopy. There is an entire page devoted to laying the 4 pieces down so you won't smear the adhesive (the stickers have transparent areas and go onto a clear surface). Unless you're in possession of 4 hands, however, it's practically impossible to do so. Customer service has been very kind and helpful in sending me a replacement (the canopy was ruined removing the smeared glue) but this sort of obstacle has never happened to me before, and I've built a good deal of sets over the years. I sincerely hope TLG takes this criticism to heart; such a cheap move has no place in a set this expensive (especially considering the Slave 1 has 400 more pieces for the same price, printing cost here is a non issue).

No Luke Skywalker Minifigure

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

The ship itself is great, but my son was upset that it didn't come with Luke Skywalker. So right now, Homer Simpson is the pilot. Its strange that a ship this expensive doesn't come with the famous pilot.

An Awesome X-Wing!

By JediLegoLover

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Star Wars Red Five X-wing Starfighter (10240):

The Red 5 X-Wing Starfighter is Luke Skywalker's personal X-Wing and the one he was flying when he blew up the Death Star in Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. He also flew it or more precisely crashed it on Dagobah in The Empire Strikes Back. It is an iconic ship and Lego have done an excellent job in capturing it in brick form. The shape of the ship is excellent and is true to it's movie counterpart. The colouring is good too, but the shade of red isn't quite like the one in the movie. The wing mechanism is truly fabulous. When you turn a wheel at the back the wings fold or unfold, so you can display it either in attack position or in normal flying position. There is a lot of detail to this model - the engines are tricky to build but capture the right shape and size. Inside the cockpit is very detailed with computer screens, joystick, and pilot's seat. There's room for R2-D2 in the back, although to be more movie accurate, he should be a bit further down, but I hardly think this is a fault. The stand is strong and means you can display the X-Wing in perfect attack position, and the plaque has information on the ship itself. This is a great model however there is one small catch - the stickers. I don't mind stickers, however the stickers you need to apply to the X-Wing are sometimes large and awkward, or small and awkward. I understand that printing isn't always feasible for Lego, however considering that this is a UCS model, it would have been nice. Also a Luke Skywalker figure would have been better considering that R2-D2 is the most popular Star Wars minifigure there is! This model however is great and looks wonderful on display. A must have for anyone who either likes UCS sets or is a Star Wars fan, or both!
