We bought this set for our 3 year old godson, based on fond memories of this from childhood. (Even though it says 4+ years, it didn't seem to be more complex or have smaller pieces than the sets for 3+years.)
When we set it up to play with him, we were disappointed to discover an overabundance of the very short logs that can't be used to build much. The set only had two large and four medium logs.
I do think that the addition of the people and animal figurines makes for more imaginative play, but thought that the lack of large logs and the addition of doors and windows was not progress from the sets of my youth. We ending up buying two different Lincoln Log sets to go with this one so he would have enough "big" logs, and now it seems to be good.
Once you have enough logs, I think this is a great basic, sturdy, adaptible toy good for learning and keeping kids of all ages entertained for hours.

My son got these when he was about 4-5 years old. On rainy days he still pulls these out and begins to build. Great childhood staple!

I remember playing with lincoln logs when I was a kid, now I'm buying them for my son who's 6. I hope he gets as much fun out of them as I did! If you have a child that likes losing the pieces to things (i.e. legos) this is the perfect toy. The pieces are big enough to not lose anywhere, even if you do lose a few, you can still build.
