I used to love this game when I was a kid. But I didn't like it when I first opened the new one for my son. When you open it it you see a hippo on the left, one on the top, one on the right and one on the bottom with thier necks extended and locked. The base is stored below them (you have to store it in the same way in order to fit in the box) All the hippos are seperate pieces. You have to "unclick" the necks and then click the hippos into the base. If you push the lever too far down thier necks will extend all the way and lock into place again which happens often as children get excited with the game and push the levers hard. My son hates this because the other players get a chance to keep eating marbles. You have to unlock it to play again and chances are it will happen a few more times.

The marbles do tend to stay in the middle and if you are lucky enough to manage to "eat" one they somehow pop out of the hippos mouth when you catch one (once again my son hates that).

Putting it away is a pain. You have to unclick all the hippos, extend thier neck all the way and lock it in order to store them ontop of the base. I mean it does save a lot of space but I would rather a big bulky box then this. I refuse to allow my son to play this because like I said he ends up getting all fustrated and mad with all the lockups, marbles popping out etc.

I recommend finding a vintage one and holding onto it or buying this when it goes on a GREAT sale.

Not What it Used to Be

By Hungry for the 80's

Pros

Cons

Comments about Milton Bradley 1001240 Hungry Hungry Hippos:

This is a far cry from the Hungry Hungry Hippos of my childhood. The pieces are cheap, and their attempt to make it "easier to store" makes the game fragile and much smaller than the old version.

Hasbro should consider quality when they take over a game company.

Comments about Milton Bradley 1001240 Hungry Hungry Hippos:

I had this game as a child and spent many years hammering on it in competition with mybrother. it was sturdy and a truly fun game. My son got this for christmas this year and I thought GREAT! Well it is redesigned and is total garbage. Literally. It broke within an hour of use. One tiny little piece that makes the head go up and come back down. Returned it and am currently seeking a vintage game to play with. I cannot believe how cheap they make EVERYTHING now. Not to mention before you could pull it out of the box and play it. Now you have to put it all together first and it doesnt fit back into the box for storage... if it didn`t break on you first that is!

Comments about Milton Bradley 1001240 Hungry Hungry Hippos:

I loved this as a kid, and my son loves it now - he's 4. But the quality is really poor. As noted by other reviewers, the plastic is thin and the board doesn't even sit flat. I'm not sure how long it will last, but we do play with it all the time. Just wish it was the same quality as the older version from my youth.

        Hippos constantly get stuck

Comments about Milton Bradley 1001240 Hungry Hungry Hippos:

You've seen the commercial - you press the lever to make the hippo's mouth open and eat the marbles. It would be fun, but each of the four hippos gets stuck more often than not. The plastic head goes too high and gets caught on the neck and will not come off until you carefully pull it off. Pushing the lever does not release it. If you press the levers slowly and carefully they don't get stuck - but what fun is that?!? My 4 yr old was so disappointed. I wouldn't recommend this at all.

Comments about Milton Bradley 1001240 Hungry Hungry Hippos:

My daughter loves to play this game, but I hate to get it out and put it away. If you want to store this game in the original box (like you do most all games) you have to disasemble it everytime you play, and the hippos are not easy to get off and on. I do not remember having to do this with the game when I had it as a kid. They need to make the box a little bigger so you can assemble once and leave it that way. I have a feeling that the clips that hold the hippos on are going to break one of these days because the plastic is going to weaken from constantly having to take the hippos on and off. Again, fun game to play, but for the price they could make it a LOT easier to store when not in use.

I have the greatest memories of this game from when I was a child. I couldn't wait until my daughter was old enough to play it. One of the hippos broke the second time the game was played. The plastic is thin and cheap. The game is really poor quality. My husband said "Most juice bottles have better plastic than this game". I think this game would be more appropriately priced at $7.oo.

The game is made out of cheap plastic. The necks get stuck during play and my 3 1/2 year old gets frustrated. The balls get stuck in the neck so you have to tilt the game in 4 directions to get the balls out and play again. MB should be ashamed of themselves for putting out this poor quality item.

I had my mom buy this for my sons for Christmas. When I assembled it I couldn't believe how cheaply made it was. From the first time my sons used it, with me playing with them, the hippos would come off, or their heads would get stuck opened. It was just a piece of junk. My mom pulled our old one out of the attic (like 20 years old) and the boys are using that one, we threw the new one in the trash. I know the quality of stuff is a little less these days, but this was ridiculous.
