My brother got this for my son for Christmas. My son was 17 months at the time. He has a hard time getting most of the shapes in because there are so many. I find that if I pull out three from one side and let him work only on that side that he is able to do it. He loves the shapes and the bright colors. He loves just taking the top off, dumping the shapes, putting them back in (still with the top off), and then dumping them again. We immediately had a problem with the top falling off. I had some velcro tape so I cut four small strips (.25" x .5") and attached them to each of the "tounges" on the lid. If you do this, make sure that you put the soft side on the lid and the prickly side on the box. If not, every time your child puts the lid down, the prickly side of the velcro will catch pet hair and everything else. This has fixed the problem. It holds firm enough to stop the lid from falling off when the box is turned and is still loose enough that he can easily pull the top off himself. However, now the top isn't flush with the sides of the box. It doesn't bother me, but if you are a perfectionist, it will probably drive you crazy.

There are many of these "Shape and sort" type toys on the market, and I wanted something a little better than average.I had read good things about this company, and the cost being somewhat pricey (compared to other like toys)I decided to purchase this one. Well, you can't judge on price; the more it costs does not mean it's better. The quality of the toy is good, except the top of the toy is not secured. If it gets turned over, and it does, everything falls out and you have a very frustrated child. She got tired of it after only 5 minutes. They really need to fix this designing problem before selling anymore. And send a fix-it kit to those with the bad lids.

Comments about Melissa & Doug 12-piece Wooden Shape-Sorting Cube:

I have this in my day care/ preschool and it is a favorite. I see that it grows with the child, my younger kids are introduced to shapes and colors by sorting, filling and dumping the shapes to and from the box. They don't pay much attention to the shape holes until they are older and ready for the challenge. The older preschoolers master the shapes into the holes and even trace the shapes and have used the cover as a stencil. Be open minded, it is an open ended activity. This toy has many developmental uses and for the price, to get a nice wood product, I highly recommend it. I have had this in the play room for a few years with daily use from 6 kids and it has held up 100%.

I bought this product about 5 years ago and its still going strong. Just passed it along to my sister in law for her little boys to use it. It's a bit more challenging than the normal shape sorters which I think is a good thing as it can grow with your child. I highly recommend it. We love Melissa & Doug products. Bottom line, I would buy it again.

Cheaply made wood and paint from China that are wet during shipment causing mold to grow on toy and then turn around to clean by low paying warehouse workers and sell to kids. Unbeliveable.

The shapes are hard to get into the spaces. When I'm trying to pick up really fast I find it hard to figure out where the shapes go lol. If a 27 year old has issues how the heck does a 2 year old get it done? Also, that top piece never stays on and so you have to hold it closed while you work on the other sides.

This gift was left under our Christmas tree by Santa for our two year old. He LOVES puzzles, and enjoyed his plastic shape sorter. We always like Melissa and Doug products, but this shape sorter is a little more difficult than most. Seems our two-year-old is easily frustrated with it. Maybe he'll grow to like it a little more the older he gets.

I don't understand why people are complaining about this toy. You don't have to tilt it to access the shapes on the sides. The colors are bright, plus it's a durable wooden toy. It's not a plastic junk! My son used it when he was a toddler. He played with it for a few years. Now, my 21-month-old daughter plays with it. She enjoys it on a daily basis. You cannot go wrong with this toy.
