Separates our living room from everywhere else. Bought an extra set of things for mounting on an adjacent wall (gate is mounted on a corner) so we can utilize the gate on either wall if we wish. It is a bit loud when retracting but thankfully both daddy and I are tall so we just step over it. Do pay attention to the instructions and mount this flush to the floor or you will find your tricky child trying so slip under it like a mouse

I really love this gate. It rolls up when not needed, so there's no baby gate having to be moved all over the place when you don't need it. And it can be easily opened one handed (in fact, I never open it with two hands). You just turn the knob and then unhook. It's very simple, I don't know why people are having so many problems trying to do it one handed. It is noisy, but my son never notices, even when he's asleep.

The only thing I would say is that I would NOT use this at the top of the stairs. With so much use (we've had ours up for a year) and with the constant use and my 18 month old son pushing on it to "try" to get to the other side, the bottom got very loose. And my son is now able to push his head on the bottom and crawl underneath. Therefore, it would be a safety hazard to use at the top of the stairs.

Overall though, I do love it.

I'm not that handy and it only took me an hour to set this thing up. If you unlock the mechanism properly, it closes quietly and with a little practice, I can easily open and close it (quietly) with one hand. I can see how this product doesn't get the greatest reviews since it really took me reading the manual to get it to close quietly and open and close easily. But it's a great product- it is well made and is out of the way when not in use. Perfect for our home, which is small and these passages are used constantly. I only close it when I need it closed and I don't have to worry about it the rest of the time. Buy it and learn how to use it!

I liked this gate enough to buy it again for our new house. I really like that it stays out of the way when it is not in use. Works great at keeping the kids off of the stairs. Once you get the hang of using the gate, it's great. You can make the noise go away by keeping the button held down. I like the noise becuase at least I know if someone has opened it from the other room. My only complaint is that when my mother used it, she only latched the top which made it crooked so now when it rolls up it is all jumbled. It still works though.

The gates works well, and keeps my daughter off the stairs. It takes a little getting used to to get it open and closed. It is very loud when it retracts, and it says that you can stop the sound, but we can't figure it out.

I'm torn on this review so I'll break it out into pros and cons:

Pros:
1. Not an eye sore. When open or closed, blends nicely with the house
2. Little ones can not open or get through closed gate

Cons:
1. Super noisy. The noise it makes keeps us from closing the gate at the top of the stairs at night for fear of waking up baby. She can't climb out of her crib (yet) but when she's in a toddler bed we're definitely going to have to figure this out.
2. Hard to open with one hand. Possible but difficult.
3. Because of the noise and difficulty opening, some adults in my home have been caught climbing over the gate and as a result, risking dangerous falls and breaking our bannister from the gate being pulled on.
4. Difficult to install. My husband who is pretty handy and capable, along with my father in law who can pretty much install anything, took a whole afternoon to install these at the top and bottom of the stairs.

To sum it up, I really want to replace these gates with a more conventional one with a door you must open and close to get through. I realize that most of the cons are faults of the user but the design of the gate is partly to blame. Because these were such a pain to install my husband doesn't even want to entertain the thought of replacing these.

Think long and hard about your needs and the kid of people living in your home (will they use this correctly or take the dangerous short cuts I mentioned above) before purchasing this item.

This gate is great and has worked out for me t the top of stairs and to block off the kitchen. What is really great is that when retracted it's profile is so slim it obstructs very little space. NOT NOISY! At first i thought opening and closing was a bit noisy - then i realized that if the unlock button is held down in the unlocked position it opens and closes quietly. This however does take two hands when quiet operation is wanted. It can be opened and closed easily with a one hand operation but it is a bit noisy.

We have a very wide opening at the beginning of our staircase this gate is the only one I could really find to fit my needs. It is somewhat expensive but works great. The only drawback is it is so loud and noisy to open. Ohh 2nd drawback it is really hard to open if you only have one hand available.

I totally understand some of the complaints with this gate, I would definitely not use it if it were a main area and used all day. That being said, this gate has been the perfect solution for us in our last 2 homes. The first time it was used at the bottom of the stairs and used when we were spending time on the lower level of our house, mainly for laundry and occasionally to watch tv, it kept my little one from climbing the stairs before he knew how to safely do it. This time we are using it at the top of the stairs to keep my very active 8 month old safe. It is a wide staircase with the wall and the banister not perfectly straight across. We also don't spend a lot of time upstairs, so it's used mainly in the morning when I am getting everyone dressed and ready. I only need to pull it once or twice and don't have to look at it every time I run up or downstairs throughout the day. It is perfect for daily use but not practical for all-day use.
