My 7 year old has had his ant farm for 2 months. The eerie green light is perfect for a night light and has been on most every night for the past 8 weeks, It's still going strong and we haven't needed to replace the battery's. The ants took a while to get going on the tunnel making but are well established. Most of them are still alive and very active. Make sure you follow the directions when putting the ants in their habitat. Refrigerate them first or they will all try to escape- this can be very exciting. I'm heading out to buy my 9 year old one of his own, so he'll stop coveting his brothers.

For those of you that are upset about your ants not surviving long, that is because the ants you receive are only infertile female workers. An ant colony has at least one queen which will lay eggs that will hatch more workers, allowing your ant farm to continue. Also, if you go out and "collect ants" for your ant farm, they will disappear because they are killing each other. They are from different colonies and will eat other ants that they come into contact with. If you want to start a colony that can survive, try finding a queen ant. You can go out on a clear summer day and search your lawn for a large winged ant, and if you place her in your (empty) ant farm with a tiny dot of honey, she will lay eggs and start a colony. Otherwise, you can search for an 'ant colony' online and purchase a fertile queen in a test tube that you may start your colony off with.
Also.. if you notice your ant farm does not have any air holes whatsoever, take a thumb tack and make a few at the very top, otherwise leave the lid of it off and mear a 1" line of vaseline a bit below the upper edge of the ant farm on the inner plastic. (As a note.. try a sand or soil-based ant farm if you can help it. It's much less stressful on the ant and it is more likely that your colony will survive. Use play sand if you are looking to re-use your ant farm tank after the gel is gone. Ants can be fed with dabs of honey, maple syrup, bits of fruit or veggies, and either bits of cat / dog food or dried insects from a pet store for protein. Try not to leave any food in your tank for more than 36 hours or mold could kill your ants! Water can be given from a damp cotton ball or q-tip. Feeding your ants in this way is also much healthier, and they will live longer.) Good luck!

Overall good

By Ashley

from Pittsburgh

Comments about Uncle Milton Edu Science Light Up Ant Farm Gel Colony:

This ant farm gave my nephew much happiness! It looks way cooler lit up and the light is bright green! Only downfall is when you order the ants, they are pricey! And they take about a week or two to come in the mail. Also, they BITE! and it hurts. They say putting them in the refrigerator helps to calm them, which isn't true! They will crawl out the sides as soon as you put them in there. The bite felt like a constant bee sting for over an hour and finger swelled up and got numb. So I suggest an adult adds the ants OUTSIDE and is very careful!

Long wait for dead ants to come in the mail

By spartan1998

from Chicago

Comments about Uncle Milton Edu Science Light Up Ant Farm Gel Colony:

We bought this at toys r us just before Christmas. Ordered the ants right away... and weeks later I got a message saying that it is too cold to send the ants and they will wait for warmer tempuratures (flash forward 3-4 months) I resubmit my order for the ants. Weeks go buy... I contact again and they have no record of my order. They finaly sent me the ants... all dead. I submit a reorder of ants... I haven't heard anything and it has been weeks. Meanwhile I pull out the ant farm that has been sitting empty on the shelf and the gel inside has disintegrated making the farm useless. Don't sell it in cold climates during the winter months! Be responsive to ant orders! Find a way to ship the ants alive!

Waste Of Money

By Disappointed Mom

from Campbell, Ohio

Comments about Uncle Milton Edu Science Light Up Ant Farm Gel Colony:

Santa brought this for my 6 year old son this Christmas. Package and ants arrived fine. Followed directions to place the ants in their habitat, and thought we were off to a good start. Ants seemed fine and a few started to work on the tunnels. However, after only two days most ants are either dead or just gathered in a big pile. Not sure if theses are dead too! Directions said most ants live 1-3 months, so what a let down that most didn't last a day. It's a shame this product ended up disappointing us cause it definitely had potential to entertain had it lasted longer than 2 days!

All ants were dead.

By TysMom

from San Diego, CA

Comments about Uncle Milton Edu Science Light Up Ant Farm Gel Colony:

My son bought this with his own little money he saved. We ordered the ants online and they arrived in the mail. We followed all the instructions, put them in the fridge before putting them in the ant farm, they were all rolled up in balls, in the instructions it says they are supposed to "revive", but they didn't, all dead, big let down.
We ordered a replacement for the ants, same thing, only 2 survived.

I bought this product but was unaware that it needed to be used right away. When I went to open the product for my boys to hunt ants, it was full of mold! Nasty!! The customer service was NO HELP and "could not do anything for me". The product has no information about an expiration date. Very disappointed!

My son and I collected our own ants because most reviews stated it took FOREVER to get them. Our ants kept escaping in less than an hour. We would collect more and they would be gone too! I sealed it even better than how it came but they still disappear and I don't know how. But I'm returning it because I don't want my house as an ant farm!
