Was a little tricky to assemble by myself, the aid of a small helper (translation: excited 3 year old angel) did speed it along but really, you should grow an extra arm or have another person help stabilize pieces until you have a few together.

My biggest beef is that this was not exactly a well thought out shelf unit. As most parents know, childrens books can get quite big and the bottom shelf, while a little taller, was not tall enough to accommodate many of my child's books....which now need to be laid flat and stacked.

The little wood tab that prevents to lid on the top from falling into the compartment also came broken off and I had to repair it myself....I didn't have the time to re-pack and wait for a new one.

All that being said, it is very cute, sturdy and the actual screws seemed to be easier than most to assemble - the flat head screwdriver was essential in stabilizing the other metal pieces so the screw can go easily in.

The "treasure chest" compartment on the top really makes the piece special for a child - my daughter LOVES hiding her jewels in it.

Bottom Line Yes, I would recommend this to a friend

PROS:
1. It's is pretty and feminine.
2. The hidden compartment is a definite plus for my 3 1/2 year old - she has already put all her jewelry treaures in it.
3. Once it goes together, it is pretty sturdy.

CONS:
1. The hidden compartment feature is not well designed and came broken so I had to figure out how to fix it - the tab which is the stop for the lid was designed to be wedged between the two pieces of wood creating an uneven compartment and large gaps.
2. Short shelves - I expected at least one shelf to be much taller to accommodate some of the bigger books - as most every parent knows, childrens books can be quite big. I would say at least HALF of the books had to be turned 90 degrees to fit (or laid flat in a stack which totally defeats the purpose of a bookcase in my opinion.
3. Small-sh....smaller than I thought it would be.

I would probably ONLY recommend this item IF it were priced lower and I forewarned the person that the shelves were inadequate for the average large children's book.

Bottom Line No, I would not recommend this to a friend
