This crane is the biggest with a record breaking 2,606 pieces. Many say this Lego set has the most pieces recorded on a Technic Lego set. When you hold the giant box, trust me its heavy. You can almost carry anything with this monster crane. So have fun. Oh one more thing, you need a lot of patience, it took me 3 and a half hours just to complete the main truck.

Along with my partner (both Legoholics), we built over 15+ expert Lego products at home. We absolutely loved all the products so far, and purchased customized shelves to place them on, but the crane was seriously frustrating and not fun to build. 1- The parts to build are too repetitive, are this product has LOTS of pieces. 2- There was an issue in the clutch power, everything mechanic in the product was not/barely functioning. All the cool features (the support parts, the crane) were not working although we rebuilt the product 3 times to make sure we weren't doing anything wrong. Would not recommend this product, go for the Shield, the minivan or mini cooper, or Star Wars for a better experience and value for money.

A Technological Marvel

By striderag

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

This is the most amazing LEGO I have ever built. The detailed design is an engineering wonder. This vehicle contains about 130 gears, showing just how complex the functioning mechanisms are. After finishing building it, everything works exactly as it should. One motor operates all of the motorized functions, five in all. This is accomplished through a number of very complicated gear boxes. The truck rolls and steers manually, but even that works beautifully and smoothly. There are a number of fun smaller details, such as opening doors, reclining seats, adjustable headrests, adjustable steering wheel, and an engine with working pistons. When building it, you must pay very close attention to every detail, including the color of the part you are using. It is sometimes difficult to see the difference between black and dark gray on the instructions. Inspect and operate each small assembly as you go. This will help prevent backtracking or disassembling later when something doesn't work correctly. This a very challenging build, but if you are up to it, is well worth it.

its been a very long time

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

i used to play a lot with LEGO in my childhood, many years ago. now with my kids being in the same age i used this opportunity to get my inner child out, so i purchased this crane and a used Tow Truck (8285, in pieces of course) for myself. this crane is amazingly awesome. Took me about 8 hours to put together. yes there are things which could be improved, but it is a toy. i recommend this crane to anyone who likes a bit of a challenge the instruction book, yes only one book, is easy to understand. the gearing on this is insane, but works perfectly. so if you think you don't want to spend this much money, think again, because you get an amazing toy

    Fun Build

    By Yanman

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

This was my second Lego build after nearly a 20 year break and I had a lot of fun! Legos have change quite a bit! Anyway, I would have rated this product higher if it were not for the issue with the outrigger feet. Due to the size and weight of this set the gears and motor don't have the strength to fully extend the outrigger feet. To get them to fully extend you have to help them along. Other than that I have had no issues with this set. Thank you Lego for helping me find my creative side again.

The best large scale technic set so far.

    By Fivepoints21

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

I love this set for the fact that it has great playability and the great power functions in it. The first thing that I would like to hit on is that it is massive but the size is proportional. The second thing that I will hit on is that the directions are very straight forward and not confusing at all. The third thing that I will hit is that the power functions is what makes this set the best because without those power functions you would not have great playability that you have with them. And from a custom moc builder prospective the frame from this truck can be used in many different ways along with the crane part is ready to go if you want to make it into a stationary crane or a crawler crane.

      Utterly Disappointing

      By LegoFutures

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

Worst Lego set I ever encountered. Boom can never be raised after more than 5 times rebuilding the entire thing. Outriggers never ever worked. Really a waste of money, a disgrace to the Lego flagship model series.

Explicit building instructions make this a very good buy but It still took me about three weeks to build and two attempts before I got all working properly. Well worth the effort..

      great set...

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

this set is great, its really fun to set up, deploy everything and play around with it, how ever the motor is too small, they should have used a XL motor instead, it really struggles when its lowering the outriggers, and when its extending the arm, I modified mine to have a XL motor and took out some of the small gears and replaced them with a drive shaft, it works great! apart from the XL motor pocking out a bit (its fine) it looks great, I don't know why they didn't do this to begins with!

      Amazing build!!

      By Noaches232

      from Granby

Comments about LEGO Technic Mobile Crane MK II (42009):

This crane is amazing. I got it for christmas and it kept me busy for the best part of 2 days (including building by flashlight late at night!). Base: The base of the crane is really fun to build. The steering is complex but easy to put together - they give you instructions on how to do it! The outriggers could be stronger, but honestly those small linear actuators aren't meant to lift 5 pounds of crane off of the ground. The engine is fun to build - but here's the only bad thing I have to say about the crane: The engine is not really too visible when the boom is down. It's a minor little detail, but that V8 should be shown off. It shouldn't be hidden under the boom!! Moving on... The cab is fun to build and is actually rather attractive (for a crane!) Functionality is great - steering range is decent for a 2 foot model, gears are hidden as best they can, and until you put the boom on the engine is clearly visible. I like where Lego put the steering gear - in the back so when driving you can push and steer at the same time. I really like that! Gearbox: Wow. All I can say is wow. This gearbox occupies 2 whole books - as big as some lego sets - and it is really really REALLY dense. I'd say that the gearbox (with batteries and all) weighs half the weight of the whole crane. When building, beware: there are some gears (6542) that if put the wrong way a function doesn't work. At all. The motor and battery box are used in here and the battery box is cleverly used as a counterweight. When finished the outriggers on the base can be used. Boom: This boom really amazes me. It is short (18") when fully retracted but when fully extended it almost triples in length. Building it is fun and it's really a relief after the gearbox. There is nothing of importance here as it does nothing on its own without power functions. Final Note: This really is an impressive set. All functions are motorized and the winch actually can lift my 4953 Fast Flyers, which has around 400 pieces. Any more than that the clutch gear kicks in. Without the clutch gear it can lift my 4993 Cool Convertible. That's really impressive! The cord is really high quality - I haven't tested how much it can lift but all I know is it can easily hold the weight of the crane itself and probably more. This crane is really amazing in terms of how many functions they cram in there - and they're all motorized!! 42009 really is a centerpiece and I get all kinds of praise on it - from both people who don't really like lego and diehard lego fanatics like myself. I would recommend this lego set to just about anyone but I will say that younger children or people with absolutely no experience with lego should not get this set because I've been building for 7 years now and I had trouble with it. But still, this is a great set and it easily gets a 5/5!
