Comments about Rio Grande Games Puerto Rico Game:

This is not an easy game and it's definitely not for everyone. Some people are going to find it too convoluted, too complex, too time-consuming, and too annoying. (I blame America's fixation on too-simple board games like Monopoly and Clue for this fact.)

On the other hand, some people are going to embrace the complexity and the way the game keeps changing itself up and absolutely thrive on it. This depends entirely on your personal preference in strategy games.

If you like Agricola, Puerto Rico will almost certainly be up your alley, if a little simpler. If you find Agricola too complex, you may want to skip this one unless Agricola is right on the cusp of "too complex" for you. If you like games MORE complex than Agricola, try La Havre or one on that level instead because this one could seem too simple.

I would classify this as a fun, solid, mid-level strategy game (as I said, a step or two under Agricola but definitely higher than, say, the basic Carcassone or Ticket to Ride). There are easier games and harder ones, faster ones and slower ones. This one is comfortable and nicely in the middle. (Golden Mean much?)

A big plus with a game like this one is that, even if you've never played it or one like it before, every card clearly states all the ways in which it changes game conditions, scores at the end, etc. This makes the game considerably less intimidating than games of this complexity level where you have to constantly refer to the rule book.

Puerto Rico could make your brain ache but, for the most part, it's a good pain :D Part chance, part strategy, part "oh, dear Lord, I hope the other player(s) don't do X", this is an excellent introduction to mid-level strategy gaming, a should-be staple to people who are already at that level, and a nice break for people who game a level higher.

Bottom line: If you're 11+ and enjoy flexing your mental muscles, this is a good pick for Family Game Night or those Saturday afternoons that geeks and geekettes such as myself like to spend on gaming.

Comments about Rio Grande Games Puerto Rico Game:

The game can seem overwhelming when you set it up the first time, but our twelve year old does it now, pestering us to play weekly. The strategy changes as other players' strategies are revealed. Our group includes a math professor, physics grad student, a technical professional, a nurse, a retired land surveyor, a seventh grader, and sometimes a first grader(with help).
