Comments about Nintendo 1001272 Nintendo 2DS Handheld Gaming System- Electric Blue:

This device was the most perfect gift for my 4 year old! He liked playing with his sister's 3DS, but broke one by snapping the screen off its hinges. With this 2DS, there is no hinges and he treats it like it's an iPad or something. It is definitely more durable for small children.

Comments about Nintendo 1001272 Nintendo 2DS Handheld Gaming System- Electric Blue:

I have returned this product for a Nintendo 3DS XL, as my 15 year old feels that the Nintendo 2DS is for younger kids. Although, your sales associate, Tommy, at the Huntington Beach Store had advised me that the Nintendo 2DS is better for my children's eyes in the long run. I appreciated the input that Tommy provided me from one parent to another.

Comments about Nintendo 1001272 Nintendo 2DS Handheld Gaming System- Electric Blue:

I bought the red model 2DS for my significant other to play Pokemon Y and liked this design enough that I bought the blue one for myself, actually replacing my 3DS XL, from Toys R' Us since I had a gift card lying around that paid for part of it. Some people have raised an eyebrow that I am using this instead of the 3DS XL but this system has a few advantages for certain people. Mainly, I found it way more comfortable to hold than the hinged 3DS systems. Because you have a longer solid piece it's supporting your hands more, especially for those of us with bigger hands, which means less discomfort. It feels more the size of a console controller. Left and right buttons are big and comfortable. There are nice dedicated Start and Select buttons instead of having them squeezed in below the bottom touch screen. Comfort it a big factor for me when it comes to a handheld and the 3DS has always lost out a bit there. This is great and is why I choose to use it.

I can barely see the 3D on a normal 3DS and even when I could it gave me a headache quickly. I think I turned it on maybe twice on my 3DS XL just to see if it worked. If you don't need, don't want, don't use, or don't see the 3D why pay for it?

I also prefer this design to the clamshell style of the other 3DS and DS models. It reminds me of a GameBoy Advance more than anything. No floppy hinge that can bend back too far or possibly break anymore! You can still put the system in sleep mode but this is now done via a switch on the bottom corner. If you are worried about the exposed screens there are carrying cases, including the very affordable matching blue and red ones by Nintendo that also have a spot for games. I picked up the matching blue and red Nintendo cases with the systems. Slid the 2DS into it and zip it up, everything is protected.

The screens look excellent. I almost think the top screen on the 2DS looks better and clearer because it doesn't have all the 3D components in there. Sound is only one speaker compared to 2 on the other 3DS models but I don't notice a difference in sound quality or volume. I usually play with my volume down very low or off anyway. If I'm playing a music game I would wear headphones. Game performance is identical to any other 3DS. The overall material is a matte plastic which some have said feels cheap but I find it just resists scratches and fingerprints better.

There are a couple of things about the 2DS preventing me from giving it 5 stars that I'll mention here for any other potential buyers. None of these things are horrible but just things to be aware of when deciding.

-Battery life is not as good as on the 3DS XL, I do notice this coming from the XL and it is probably my biggest complaint. The XL gets at least and hour more, usually two.
-The directional pad feels mushy. It works fine but it feels bad/cheap. Most 3DS games use the Circle Pad which feels the same as it always has so this is not as big a complaint as it would be otherwise.
-It won't fit in a pocket. I carry a bag so it's fine by me. My significant other has complained about this a little because he would like to be able to carry it that way. It will fit in his jacket pocket but it's still big for that.
-Overall design is a little bit cheap feeling. Yes, it's a budget system. Nintendo does make high quality things and I'm not worried about it breaking but the edges on both of ours creak a little and the SD card slot door looks cheap and not quite flush.

If you are just getting into the 3DS this is really a great place to start. If you are worried about young children with the 3D you can go for this or if you are one of the many people who won't use the 3D. If you get a chance try holding one and seeing if it is comfortable to you as well. It ultimately does everything the 3DS does, plays all the 3DS games and regular DS games, and works in the exact same way just without the 3D screen. It would also be a great choice for a younger child.
