Comments about Meccano 1010097 1010097 Erector Multimodel Motorized Remote Infra Red Control:

My daughter bought this for her 8 yr old son. While it would be expected that the parts are tedious to put together due to basic nature of the set. Every part is put together with a bolt and nut. I believe this would teach good skills to a child who has the patience. Probably not for a avg 8 yr old without a lot of parental support. The problem with the set is the the motor and drive set is not powerful enough to overcome all the friction in the parts. Simply put, the motor cannot turn the wheels after all the parts are in place. Why waste the effort? Also, the instructions have almost no words some the pictures are not clear on how parts go together. There is no troubleshooting section to solve problems like the one I mentioned. The manufacturers website is useless.

Comments about Meccano 1010097 1010097 Erector Multimodel Motorized Remote Infra Red Control:

Of course any Meccano or Erector set requires a whole lot of patience, far more mechanical skill than a Lego set or other snap together kits. But the point is to teach more how real mechanical things are put together so that is great. My son is 5 but very good with his hands, he needs a lot of help right now but after a few months I think he will be able to put together some of these without me.

This kit has good quality parts for the most part but a few things really put a damper on the fun. First, the 6V motor is weak. There is absolutely no way it will power the car shown, it's way to heavy. The motor is not that bad quality, but it runs fast, and needs a double gear reduction which you put together with the kit gears and wheels. This is cool in that it shows how a gear reduction works. But not cool in that the gears are not very precise and the geartrain friction pretty much stops the motor.

Now there are models like the forklift where the motor just raises and lowers the fork using a screw drive, you figure it would be powerful enough for that. But the brass lead screw nut only has screw threads at one end, and the fork loads the nut and twists it creating again a lot of friction, so that tends to bind as well and stop the motor.

Another major pain is that the instruction manual has missing pages. The forklift and the dump truck instructions are both incomplete. You can find a very similar manual on the meccano website but this set is painted differently and is special to Toys R Us so it's a bit hard to find.

The car shown as the featured model looks cool but is really heavy and has a lot of superfluous body work, and takes a long time to put together. It's the first model in the instructions but take my advice and start with something simpler first. They should put a simpler model in the front of the book.

Also realize that there is only one motor in the kit, so a model will only be able to motorize one function. Forward back OR dump truck dumper up/down, etc, but not both. You won't be able to make a car that both goes and steers for instance. It would be nice to have two motors as the remote can switch between up to four motors. Maybe there is another motor available to buy, you will need an extra battery pack too though, they are very large and heavy. There seems to be no way to share the one battery pack.

This kit needs a better quality gear motor, a better lead screw nut, a corrected instruction manual, and it could be pretty fantastic.
