The telescope is not nearly as bad as these reviews are making it out to be. We got it for my 6 year old for xmas. I did not expect him to be able to use it, rather I find things for him to see. I like the construction as we originally bought a Meade that broke the day he opened the gift. Its sturdy sound construction. Lenses are fine, could use more instruction though. The only complaint I do have is when the tripod is fully extended, it is very wobbly and hard to keep items in view. However, with that being said, we saw some amazing views of the moon, jupiter (actually see the striping) and hope to see more when it warms up and clouds go away. Its not hard to use, but dont expect to take it out of the box and immediately see the perfect picture of the moon. It does take a little time to find and focus and a little patience, as with any telescope. Like I said, these reviews make it seem terrible, its not.

I think its a good first telescope. I bought this for my 8 year old son for Christmas. [...] It wouldn't focus and I could hear something moving around. I exchanged it. The second one is good. I haven't taken it outside yet being I dont have a balcony and it was winter, but by following the instructions on the DVD we started looking during the day. We were able to see the windows of a sky scraper that was very far away and we could see it very well. Looked at the moon that night and it was ok BUT I want stronger eye pieces so it can focus better and so we can see the things we want to see better, [...]

Comments about Toys 'R' Us Edu Science Astro-Gazer-70 Telescope:

This is will my second attempt at leaving a review as this company apparently doesn't want true reviews including negativity.

Don't buy this thing. Cheap made in China. The Finderscope will not lineup to the telescope regardless of how long you try to do this. The focus is terrible, and, once you add magnification, things look like viewing out of a cheap pair of $2 binoculars won at a fair, meaning, fuzzy blue on top, fuzzy red on bottom and white in the middle. The 9mm is totally useless. Last, it doesn't matter how tight you try to make the telescope on its tripod, it still moves, so don't worry about the instructions telling you not to touch the telescope because it will move, it will do that on its own for you, which is not what you want. Save your money and don't buy this toy. Get the real deal after saving a thousand or so, you'll be glad you waited.

Parts are missing so we are unable to use the unit until we get the parts needed. The knobs that hold the unit to the base were missing. I bought this for an 8 year old and looks like it is durable for his age. May update this review if possible, depending on the speed of the replacement.

Comments about Toys 'R' Us Edu Science Astro-Gazer-70 Telescope:

My 10 year old son set it up in about 10 minutes. We find it stable and easy to use. During the day he focused in on a high rise under construction 15 km away. He was pleased with the details, scaffolding and stairs he could see. Same night, we saw the craters of a full moon and Jupiter and 'accidentally' spotted one of Jupiter's moons. We hadn't realized what we focused in on until the next morning, *he told me* by using the Cyber Sky software included. He is excited about focusing in on Jupiter's moons tonight. Meanwhile, he is reading all about Jupiter and we've had it less than 24 hrs.

This telescope is everything I expected. I read the rotten reviews and bought it anyway. Why? Because where we currently live a more expensive Orion on Celestron telescope is not available to me. AND I wanted a starter scope for terrestrial viewing as-well. I wonder what many of the unhappy customers expected from a telescope, a starter scope in particular. In about 6 months I expect I will upgrade and spend $300+ but for the money I LOVE this exciting introduction to astronomy for my kids.

Comments about Toys 'R' Us Edu Science Astro-Gazer-70 Telescope:

Baught this a week ago, and have taken it out almost every night since if it was clear enough. The only thing you can see pretty good is the moon, it claims on the box that you can see Saturn, well you can see Saturn with your naked eye, but just like with this scope you just cant make out anything about it. The only way you know it is Saturn is by using a guide. The 4mm eyepiece is useless, way to small of a viewing hole to see anything and just blurs anything you do see with it. The focus peice was messed up and would only change focus here and there as it would just make a clicking sound and never move. Also very hard to keep steady enough to use with out having to hold the thing in order to look in it.

All in all I would never recommend this to anyone not even for a 5yr old kid. I ordered a awesome scope off the net for just about the same price as this one, cant wait to get it.

Light weight, better construction than some Ive used. Can see one cool shot of the moon with the 20mm eyepeice, that was spectacular to see.Device movements are horrible. After taking forever to find a star, telescope does not move around easily, you eventually have to use force to attempt to got star centered, at that point you've lost the object. Can't see Jupitor or Saturn as indicated.3x barlow very blurry, cant use.4mm eyepiece blurry, cant even make out. Makes blurry star, blurrier.Microscope at toys r us was also worthless!! Go to [@]

Our 8 year old grandson loves the telescope. The one problem is that when he screws the different lenses into the mount, it makes the screw-in piece unscrew. It just has to be pushed back in but it won't be long until it breaks.

He loves it anyway, and can't wait to go to their country home to test it in the dark, away from the city lights.
