After trying another type of lever lock- one that my two 1/4 yr. old son quickly "figured out"- this one works very well. It does its job, and even though he's seen us use it, he still can't open it. I would have given it all five stars, EXCEPT for the reason that it's a little tricky to install, b/c you have to take the whole handle off. AND and this is a big AND... you have to buy one for each side of the door. Otherwise, you can't lock the door once your in the room you're trying to keep the toddler out of. I.E. My husband put the lock on the outside of our den door. (That's where our home office stuff is.) He then called me in to look at his work, and was a little miffed b/c he said we wouldn't be able to have the door locked while we were in there. (While he worked from home, to keep my son out in the other room with me) I said, oh you must be wrong, so I played with the lock, switching it to the lock position trying to prove him wrong. I then, unthinking, shut the door to prove my point, and the next thing you know, my husband and I are locked in our den at 10:00 at night, with both our front and garage doors locked and baby tucked in bed. Luckily, he was able to jimmy the door with a credit card, (which I didn't think happened except in movies)so we quickly realized that you need one on each side, so you can lock it from the other side once your in. One lock would work if it's a door you don't ever go in without your baby, or if the door has it's own lock on one side.

Great product if installed upside down. My boys, 2 1/2 & 11 months can both open these locks, but my husband had the BRILLIANT idea of reinstalling them upside down (with the moveable locking mechanism on top). That way they would have to push the lever up to open, which is much harder for babies to do. My 2 1/2 yr old hasn't figured it out yet and the baby (11 months) can't open it at all, since normally he hangs on the handle to open it. We've turned all our baby locks (all 8 of them) upside down. I would recommend buying these but please install upside down on all doors; for outside door, it may also be a good idea to install an electronic chime or alarm just in case the kids manage to open the door, so you'll be alerted. Not a bad product you just have to be creative. This may not be a perfect product but we went through sveral different locks and these were the best, especially for the price when you have a lot of doors to lock!!

Comments about Safety 1st Lever Handle Lock:

We recently moved into an apartment and the front door is not safe for our 2 year old. While it is lockable, it unlocks automatically when the handle is pulled down. I bought the product intending to use it to keep my 2 year from going outside. Because the door knob includes a bolt lock, the safety lock would not fit on the door. I'm sure this product is fine for an interior door, but doesn't work at all for the exterior door.

Comments about Safety 1st Lever Handle Lock:

You have to remove the door handle, so the install does take some time to do all the doors in your house, However, it is well worth it! Here's why: once the handle is a stalled it': solid and secure; you can actually leave it on the door now without it being inconvenient because you can leave it in the unlocked position and use the door as you did before. We have probably a year until we have to fully deal with child proofing, but we got it done early because these are so nice. As soon as we need to lock, you just push in and secure the lock to baby proof; when family is in town for birth, we can leave in unlocked position and it isn't a learning curve, but they work as normal, until the lock is applied. We will likely keep these on after the nessecity of them because they lowere k great and work great and are easy to leave unlocked the whole time.

A little bit of a pain to get on and positioned correctly. It does make it harder to open the door, but my son can still pull the handle down against the lock, even though it is positioned correctly on the door handle.

Comments about Safety 1st Lever Handle Lock:

Beware: This product only works on doors that have locks. For example, our children's bedroom door, it works well on. Our living room French doors and their play room, it doesn't. It does work well on the bedroom door, wchic has a lock.
