After trying another type of lever lock- one that my two 1/4 yr. old son quickly "figured out"- this one works very well. It does its job, and even though he's seen us use it, he still can't open it. I would have given it all five stars, EXCEPT for the reason that it's a little tricky to install, b/c you have to take the whole handle off. AND and this is a big AND... you have to buy one for each side of the door. Otherwise, you can't lock the door once your in the room you're trying to keep the toddler out of. I.E. My husband put the lock on the outside of our den door. (That's where our home office stuff is.) He then called me in to look at his work, and was a little miffed b/c he said we wouldn't be able to have the door locked while we were in there. (While he worked from home, to keep my son out in the other room with me) I said, oh you must be wrong, so I played with the lock, switching it to the lock position trying to prove him wrong. I then, unthinking, shut the door to prove my point, and the next thing you know, my husband and I are locked in our den at 10:00 at night, with both our front and garage doors locked and baby tucked in bed. Luckily, he was able to jimmy the door with a credit card, (which I didn't think happened except in movies)so we quickly realized that you need one on each side, so you can lock it from the other side once your in. One lock would work if it's a door you don't ever go in without your baby, or if the door has it's own lock on one side.

Great product if installed upside down. My boys, 2 1/2 & 11 months can both open these locks, but my husband had the BRILLIANT idea of reinstalling them upside down (with the moveable locking mechanism on top). That way they would have to push the lever up to open, which is much harder for babies to do. My 2 1/2 yr old hasn't figured it out yet and the baby (11 months) can't open it at all, since normally he hangs on the handle to open it. We've turned all our baby locks (all 8 of them) upside down. I would recommend buying these but please install upside down on all doors; for outside door, it may also be a good idea to install an electronic chime or alarm just in case the kids manage to open the door, so you'll be alerted. Not a bad product you just have to be creative. This may not be a perfect product but we went through sveral different locks and these were the best, especially for the price when you have a lot of doors to lock!!

Difficult to install. Removing the handle is not a problem but putting it all together was not common sense to me. In addition- if you pull the handle down with force it will still open the door.

Comments about Safety 1st Lever Handle Lock:

We use this on our basement door. Most of the time it works great if we are all upstairs. However, if you go downstairs there is no way to lock it behind you and if someone else locks it once you go through you are locked downstairs. It says if you pull really hard on handle it would open but you'd likely break your handle. If it is just me and my 2year old home and I run down to do a load of laundry this is completely ineffective and dangerous. The door is not locked and she wants to follow. So this is not a good lock for a door to stairs but would work well on a closet. You have to remove the door handle to install this device and it is very large looking.

Comments about Safety 1st Lever Handle Lock:

I have placed these door handle covers on all the doors in the house even those I think the babies and toddlers will never get to for it takes just a second for a toddler to scoot out of sight to a door I think they will never get to. It doesn't take long for the toddler to learn to open an unprotected front door and get out of the house. When you have an infant and a toddler your eyes can't be everywhere. Every door has to be protected.

Works fine. My handle must be a little more proud of the door than most because the product is only barely talk enough to interfere with handle motion (like it's supposed to to prevent toddler escape). Use tape as your third hand to help with installation.
