This is a great pump that has enabled me, a first-time mom, to provide my milk to my son his 8 months, 5 of which I've been back in the office, and we're still going. It was recommended to me by another mom, a stranger in the aisle at Babies R Us, who said she wished she had it from the start. If I were going to buy a pump again, I would go with this one because it pumps the milk I need in about 10 minutes and gives me little to no trouble. It was worth the money to me. I even got a compliment on the bag from a person who didn't know what it was. I got the backpack because I assumed having my hands free would be advantageous.

Tips and Insights:
-Note that the pump comes with a size Medium shield. The manual has a guide for fitting the shield. I had to buy a Small.
-Definitely run the pump after done pumping to get the condensation out of the tubes. Mine usually has condensation.
-I got the bustier to go hands free and did eating and computer and reading while pumping. So nice.
-Get extra membranes, which are the little white rubber pieces. They are very small and easy to lose down the drain. I've used the two extra that came with the pump and have more.
-When removing the little white membrane from the valve, pop it out from the back with your finger instead of pulling it from the front. One of mine tore that way.
-When pushing on the yellow piece of the valve, be careful not to push it on too hard otherwise it may be difficult to remove.
-A few times I've had apparently no suction on one side due to some positiong error and I think I found that I just need to make sure my breast was "out" enough to round out and fill the bottom of the shield to make a vacuum.
-One of the fabric zipper pulls came off at 7.5 months. I replaced it with a key ring and it's good.
-I only had milk get into the tubes and diaphragm once and it was easy to rinse and wipe down. Running the pump on high gets the water out of the tubes.
-I've found I can turn the pump up during a session as my body gets comfortable with expressing and get more milk that way.
-I always pump into the 5oz bottles that came with the pump. Then I transfer the milk into bags, containers, etc.

I pumped from 4 weeks to 3 months, 3 times a day after feeding, at which time I returned to work and had a good stockpile. I pumped in the morning before work after first feeding and at work for each missed feeding, which was 3. I generally pump for any missed feeding, but don't bother if it's invconvenient (as long as it doesn't happen consistently or my body will get the wrong message). Around 6 months I stopped pumping in the morning before work, when I noticed my stockpile was going up instead of evening out, and he was starting solids around that time as well anyway.

When at work I just rinse the parts after each use and wash them by hand with soap and water when I get home. I occassionally sterilize them in boiling water for 10 min.

This review is coming from a second time breastfeeding mom. I used an Ameda for my first child for 13 months and never had a single issue. I have used this Medela for 5 months and this thing is horrible! I so wish I would have bought an Ameda again. My Ameda lasted the whole time I breastfed it only broke after being in storage for 2 years so I had to buy a new one. The Ameda has a far superior design and is much more user friendly. This Medela requires a lot of maintenance and replacement pieces.
Here is my list of comparisons:
-On the Ameda the suction portion is above where the milk gets collected so there no way for your milk to get into the tubes or create condensation in your tubes! With the Medela your milk passes right by the tubing which creates condensation and makes it possible for milk to actually back up into the tubing. Once my milk backed up all the way through the tubing to the actual pumping mechanism which made a huge mess, forced me stop pumping, take everything apart, clean the tubing, and take apart the face plate and clean the faceplate! Such a pain when trying to pump at work!! –-You have to let your pump run for 2 minutes after pumping, or even if you do but tubing is like 2 months old and starting to go bad, if you do not let the tubes run through the condensation will then create mold/mildew inside the tube!!! Really impossible to clean, I washed with water, I used alcohol (recommended in the booklet), and used a steam bag still not clean- so then you are stuck getting a new set every few months. So tubing huge issue.
-The valves. In the Ameda the valves are a soft rubber flexible piece that is easy to clean and NEVER broke even though they give you a second one. The Medela the valves are a hard plastic piece that are sometimes difficult to remove so do not put them on the connectors to tightly. then there are these stupid little membranes on the valves that are tiny, slippery, and very easily break. you will need replace these pretty often because not only can they rip easily but if they get worn out then they don't lay flat so you can lose suction, ugh!
-The connectors which connect the bottle, the tubing, and the breast shield also are very difficult to clean. In the Ameda the chamber is one flat surface, in the Medela there are like three little chambers where if you don't clean it milk can get stuck in there and create mildew- which happened to me! No matter what bottle cleaner you have there is no way to get up in there. So you do HAVE to use the steamer bags to fully clean out all your parts. After buying the bags I have not had an issue with the mildew since.
----So if you are not keeping track just to maintain this pump you will spend more $ on replacement tubes, membranes, and steam bags just keep it clean.
-Now also take into consideration that today my pump has NO SUCTION!! So now I am using a hand pump this is what sent me over the edge to write this review. I have done all the troubleshooting and still nothing works. It is under warranty and they will be hearing all of this when I call to get a new pump. Now I have to hand pump today and hopefully my replacement will be in soon. If I can I will just ask for my $ back to get an Ameda but doubtful on that!
So those are the big issues.
-Also take into consideration the actual backpack design. I have already lost two of the zipper tabs in 5 months and other are loose so just a pain to open by having to pull on the little metal piece left behind. The pump is sewn into the backpack so it makes it difficult troubleshooting and get the faceplate back on because it is awkward. Also means you have to take the backpack with you and you cannot get a new one even if all your zipper tabs pull off- you're stuck with it!
I also will share my best friend also had a Medela for only 3 months and had very similar issues with mildew/mold/ tubes melting, and tabs coming off. This thing is junk. the hospital recommends it I know. But they have beautiful Symphony pumps that are absolutely nothing like this and are far superior. I used a hospital Medela while in the hospital with my daughter when she was a month old. Used it for 2 weeks loved it so bought this thinking it would be the same just a smaller version- it absolutely is not the same thing!! Save yourself money, headaches, and heartaches (because now I am worried I am going to lose my supply before my new one comes) Buy Ameda!!

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

I use this product 6-7 times a day. I am a working mom so I am on the go a lot. This allows me to pump wherever I am. I purchased the car adaptor so I can pump in my car but I recommend only doing that if you must. The pump doesn't seem to get the right amount of suction when using the car plug. I also recommend avoiding using the battery pack option for the same reason. It also seems like the pump motor is working harder. When used in at home and work this pump works great!
I would like the back pack to have about 5 more inches or storage in the top compartment. Over all i am very pleased with this product. Ish I could afford 2 so I could leave one at home and one in my car for work ad outings

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

I love that it's a backpack. I can put my nursing cover inside, along with breast pads, and my little mini cooler! I find this very easy to use while at work. I purchased the car charger and haven't used that yet, but I the love having the option! I use the Medela pump and save bags that are a life saver!I thought If I removed the white cover it would just flow out while pumping, but if you do that it doesn't work. So after pumping I have to tap the connection for the breast part to get the remainder milk out. I'm very happy with this pump though, and highly recommend!

I have to pump exclusively because my baby has to have his milk thickened. This pump has been a lifesaver. I use the battery pack and put it on my back to pump on the go when I'm not able to sit in one place for 30 minutes. Having a high-quality pump was a must for me.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

I exclusively pump, bc my 2 month old baby boy has latching problems. With that said I have to pump at least 5 or 6 times a day, and with the medela pump in style advance there are some ups but also downs. A good thing is that everything is in the backpack,(except batteries) once you are up and going its pretty easy but it is also a hassle washing everything, connecting it and putting everything together. I did think before I bought it it would be faster to express my milk but for some reason its not, my left breast is always done in the first 10 minutes, but my right one takes an extra 15 or 20 minutes, which I hate to have to reposition it every 5 minutes, for it to work. Overall it takes me 35 minutes to 45 minutes to fully express my milk. I give medela pump in style advance a 3 stars, bc I also have the medela manual pumps and with those surprisingly it takes me less time pump.

Comments about Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump - Backpack:

I nursed my first child for eight months, but I had a breast reduction when she was two. My surgeon asked if I planned on having any more children. I said I didn't know. That said, he saved as many milk ducts as he could. With that in mind, when I had my second child seven years later, I rented a hospital grade pump not knowing if I would even be able to BF. Interestingly enough, I produced way more milk second time around. I returned the rented pump after 30 days and bought the Medela backpack to keep up my supply and build up my stash in the freezer. It worked just as well as the hospital grade pump! And I loved that the backpack didn't look like a typical pump. And still works like brand new even after 18 months of use. I would recommend it to any nursing mama. It was most effective if I pumped one side while she was nursing the other. Easy to use!

This is my 4th pump. I used the Lansinoh Double Electric Breast Pump it was pretty good. Then I tried Ameda Purely Yours Breast Pump and its the WORST pump ever!! I also tried the hospital pump for 4 months I LOVED IT! But at $120 a month its not realistic to rent for a year. This is a good option, I get about .25 oz less per pump compaired to the hospital brand. You have to pump both at the same time you can't just do one breast to if they just feed you still have to pump both sides. I would buy this product again or the Lansinoh. I think they are pretty simpular but this one is a little better.
