I am a first time mom of a 5 mo old. FOr the most part I have exclusively breastfed my baby for 5 months. I have used this breast pump since my daughter has been 2 weeks old to store milk to build up a supply of extra milk. I had a VERY hard time breastfeeding in the beginning and all the nurses just said keep pumping to keep your milk supply up. So I did and buy week 4 we got the hang of it.

I have used the pump at least 3 times a day since returning to work at 7 weeks (so I have been using it for about 4.5 months now. I pump once before work and twice at work. It has held up very well. No complaints at all. If i had to buy a breast pump all over again, I might look at the hands free model, but this one is great! I bought rechargable batteries b/c at work i do not have access to an outlet and they last pretty long (keep a spare 8 AA batteries though b/c when the recharables go, they go. If you plan on pumping a lot, I would also recommend buying additional Medela bottles to store milk and 2-breast shields w/ valve & membrane. Note: Lansinoh bottles fit too! Note: the Gerber plastic milk storage containers are great and cheaper than the Medela bags. Also, regarding the back pack style versus the shoulder bag. The pump is heavy but i would have probably preferred the should bag, just b/c it looks a little more professional, but the backpack is great. Only negative (very, very minor) the velcro wore off on the one side pocket where I keep the spare AA batteries that i carry, no big deal though. All in all i would buy this pump again and i am very pleased with the quality for the money we spent.

This review is coming from a second time breastfeeding mom. I used an Ameda for my first child for 13 months and never had a single issue. I have used this Medela for 5 months and this thing is horrible! I so wish I would have bought an Ameda again. My Ameda lasted the whole time I breastfed it only broke after being in storage for 2 years so I had to buy a new one. The Ameda has a far superior design and is much more user friendly. This Medela requires a lot of maintenance and replacement pieces.
Here is my list of comparisons:
-On the Ameda the suction portion is above where the milk gets collected so there no way for your milk to get into the tubes or create condensation in your tubes! With the Medela your milk passes right by the tubing which creates condensation and makes it possible for milk to actually back up into the tubing. Once my milk backed up all the way through the tubing to the actual pumping mechanism which made a huge mess, forced me stop pumping, take everything apart, clean the tubing, and take apart the face plate and clean the faceplate! Such a pain when trying to pump at work!! –-You have to let your pump run for 2 minutes after pumping, or even if you do but tubing is like 2 months old and starting to go bad, if you do not let the tubes run through the condensation will then create mold/mildew inside the tube!!! Really impossible to clean, I washed with water, I used alcohol (recommended in the booklet), and used a steam bag still not clean- so then you are stuck getting a new set every few months. So tubing huge issue.
-The valves. In the Ameda the valves are a soft rubber flexible piece that is easy to clean and NEVER broke even though they give you a second one. The Medela the valves are a hard plastic piece that are sometimes difficult to remove so do not put them on the connectors to tightly. then there are these stupid little membranes on the valves that are tiny, slippery, and very easily break. you will need replace these pretty often because not only can they rip easily but if they get worn out then they don't lay flat so you can lose suction, ugh!
-The connectors which connect the bottle, the tubing, and the breast shield also are very difficult to clean. In the Ameda the chamber is one flat surface, in the Medela there are like three little chambers where if you don't clean it milk can get stuck in there and create mildew- which happened to me! No matter what bottle cleaner you have there is no way to get up in there. So you do HAVE to use the steamer bags to fully clean out all your parts. After buying the bags I have not had an issue with the mildew since.
----So if you are not keeping track just to maintain this pump you will spend more $ on replacement tubes, membranes, and steam bags just keep it clean.
-Now also take into consideration that today my pump has NO SUCTION!! So now I am using a hand pump this is what sent me over the edge to write this review. I have done all the troubleshooting and still nothing works. It is under warranty and they will be hearing all of this when I call to get a new pump. Now I have to hand pump today and hopefully my replacement will be in soon. If I can I will just ask for my $ back to get an Ameda but doubtful on that!
So those are the big issues.
-Also take into consideration the actual backpack design. I have already lost two of the zipper tabs in 5 months and other are loose so just a pain to open by having to pull on the little metal piece left behind. The pump is sewn into the backpack so it makes it difficult troubleshooting and get the faceplate back on because it is awkward. Also means you have to take the backpack with you and you cannot get a new one even if all your zipper tabs pull off- you're stuck with it!
I also will share my best friend also had a Medela for only 3 months and had very similar issues with mildew/mold/ tubes melting, and tabs coming off. This thing is junk. the hospital recommends it I know. But they have beautiful Symphony pumps that are absolutely nothing like this and are far superior. I used a hospital Medela while in the hospital with my daughter when she was a month old. Used it for 2 weeks loved it so bought this thinking it would be the same just a smaller version- it absolutely is not the same thing!! Save yourself money, headaches, and heartaches (because now I am worried I am going to lose my supply before my new one comes) Buy Ameda!!

Being a new mom is hard enough, with this Breast pump it made it easier to assist with breast feeding and keeping up. The only thing I didnt like was the noise, due to the fact it didnt come out of the backpack in which it came in. I recommend this to any new mom out there! It is worth the money spent!

I am an exclusive pumper and had to replace my tote because of my error. I decided to go with the backpack and like it soooo much better. It is a little smaller and fits all I need to go to and from work with ease. If you want to store a bunch of things (for some reason?) the tote is good for that. I only carry the cooler with bottles, my pump parts, the adapter and a hands-free bra I made. My only wish would be one more nipple and cap...and a car adapter instead of the battery one.

I've been using this for alittle over 2 months now twice a day five days a week. It pumps quickly and usually in 20 minutes I have everything set up, pumped, broken down and cleaned. I never use the ice pack/holder because there is a fridge at work but when traveling I have. Makes everything stay very cold but it does take up the entire top compartment so that you cant fit a hooter hider very well. Ended up getting mold on the inside of the connection piece due to me not realizing it needed to be cleaned with soapy water daily. I was just rinsing it between uses. I have pumped while driving but instead of spending a small fortune on batteries or buying their adapter I just use a universal adapter that has normal plug ins. Works well. The downside to this product is the bottles. My husband is a stay at home Dad and they leak terribly. Hes tried sending them back and exchanging them but they still continue to leak. I wish they sold just the pump because all the fantastic extras are a waste. They have good customer service when you call their hotline.

This pump was amazing for me. I used it for six months and have also lent it to family members who purchased their own new accessory kit for it. Still going strong! I sometimes used the Medela Symphony when pumping at work (I'm a NICU nurse so they're prevalent in my workplace) and this works almost as well as the hospital grade!

I use my pump 2-4 times a day on average. I had a Medela Swing single pump that had been giving me problems. I researched pumps extensively before purchasing a new one, but was still reluctant to buy another Medela.
This pump is great. If you're going to spend the money on a pump, make it a double, especially if you plan on using it daily. Since buying this pump my milk has increased and I finally have enough to feed baby without supplementing. I haven't noticed much of a difference in the feel between the Personal fit breast shield and the SoftFit breastshield, as this was one of my concerns.
I did contact Medela customer service about my old pump which was three years old and they were more than willing to help me out and troubleshoot the problem.
The only complaint I have about the pump is that the power cord can be a little longer.
