I like many others on here grew up on the original incarnation of the Power Rangers brand so when I heard a new collectors series of figures, zords and prop replicas were on the way, I was nevertheless excited. I have bought each item as they were released and this Dragonzord is no exception. Tommy Oliver's first zord has never looked this good in plastic form. With this review I'll talk about various aspects of the figure via it's paint, articulation/sculpt and the accessories, at a grading scale out of a possible 5, but first let's look at that packaging.

The package is a four color box and has a design very reminiscent of the original Dragonzord packaging from 1993 recreating that original style from the green starburst, power bolts all the way to the actual figure pose which is slightly up and to the right arms raised mouth open. Longtime collectors and fans will instantly recognize this. The Dragonzord script is in bold lettering as well as the Legacy font (in shiny gold foil) and is very attractive to the eyes it really adds to the asthetic of those once boring 1993 boxes. This is a very nice homage that collectors will love. 4/5

As for sculpt, when taking the figure out and assembling him we have a very striking toy and the most show accurate Dragonzord I think we will ever get, which is kind of disappointing (but we'll get to that later.) but nevertheless very cool. Since the original design was blocky being a guy in a vinyl suit, this translates into the figure which is a good thing, Dragonzord doesnt need to be streamlined to add various points of articulation. Everything is being represented from the tail drill to the chest armor and of course that wonderful Japanese script and Z's that's very accurate to the show. Longtime fans know just how frustrating it was to see power bolts and M's all over our toys growing up. Most of the detail comprises of raised grid lines and spaces along the chest plate and knee caps and soles of the feet that give a very exciting look to the beast. Once these were sticker details now they're been incorporated into the sculpt taking away the cheap toy feel of the original and giving off a more mature collector's item vibe. The materials used are sturdy hard ABS or PVC plastics and I dont really have an issue with anything major breaking with careful play but some of the pegs and other parts used for transformation could weaken over time so it's something to watch out for. The die cast metal used is in his feet the font portion of the shoulders and I presume the waist. This makes for great balance in the original dragon mode but unfortunately can hinder the overall enjoyment once we begin to transform the toy into it's different modes.

Since this is a transforming toy it can combine into the MegaDragonzord and Battle Mode variations using the Legacy or 2010 Megazord and it's here that this wonderful sculpt becomes a problem.

With Mega mode the zord splits apart and with clamps on either side plugs into the shoulders of the Megazord to form a headress, while in battle mode by removing the plate and tail the arms fold into the shoulders (like in Mega mode) and the shoulders rotate to the front to form the Green Ranger symbol chestplate, by pushing the crest down the jaws open and the robot face is revealed. Attach the mammoth, triceratops and tiger zords and transformation is complete.

On one hand when transformed each mode does look pretty darn good especially Battle mode, but because of those large heavy feet, once those shins are tucked into the thighs there's no lock or clasp to hold them in place and gravity takes it's toll. The original had a ratchet joint to keep the feet in place and Bandai should have utilized this for a toy that will have heavy diecast. When combined we suffer another problem, the balance of the toy isnt properly balanced and with the smaller Legacy Megazord feet it becomes hard to get him to stand without drooping. A severe oversight as I believe in time those joints will give in and the whole thing will topple. 3.5/5

Paint has been applied well which should be expected with a collectors toy pushing the 90 dollar mark but there has been some slop on some areas of my toy mainly on the sides of the neck and the crest on top of his head. Some of the green does bleed a bit into the plastic. It's only noticable at very close range so it's a minor nit pick. 4/5

Articulation is really interesting as not only do we have the joints used for transformation like the knees and thighs and the folding arms and the opening jaws but rocker ankles have been added as well as a articulated tail. Yes we have an articulated tail! Extendable sections make for some crazy poses that you can do to mimic what was seen on the show. The section can then be pushed together to form the tail drill for the Battle Mode configuration. Other joints include rotating jointed hands that go a full 360 and wrists that bend upwards for transformation purposes, the hips do rotate slightly upwards and well that's about it you cannot get full leg movement which kind of renders the rocker ankles somewhat useless. Their only purpose seems to be to incorperate the transformation. Nothing too major added but what is there does make for a slight improvement. I cannot see too much that could have been improved. 4.5/5

As for accessories Dragonzord doesnt come with much but what is here is essential. Included are two pairs of hands one, for rocket firing poses as well as transformation and a flexed pair of hands that is currently shown on this site. The hands do look excellent and are great improvements of the hollowed out shells that were with the 1993 version. I'm really impressed with Bandai for adding this feature simply because one would not think to ask for two pairs of hands. You simply have to credit the design team for this addition. You just have no idea you needed it until it's there for you. The stand is also included and combines with the chest plate and tail piece to form the Power Laser Drill or the Power Staff or whatever they called it on the show. Now at first glance this thing when combined looks a tad large then standing it next to Dragonzord and the thing looks HUGE. At 11 inches this drill is taller than the Battle Mode and just looks awkward because of this. A seperate tail piece should have been made for the drill portion or perhaps some of the length should have been taken off to keep in scale. As is the drill is just too darn big. The other nitpick I have is the lack of electronics, I really would have liked to have a new Dragonzord that could make the battle alert sounds and flashing lights like the original. Oh well it's not there, moving on. 4/5

All in all this is a near perfect representation of the Green Ranger's battle machine and I do believe all Power Ranger fans young and old should pick one up. The price is steep but in the coming months this thing will sell out and with that said ebay and 2nd party retailers will gauge the daylights out of this thing. I just wish some of the things I discussed like Ratchet joints and locking mechanisms could have been taken into consideration because those are really the only thing holding this toy back from absolute perfection.

The dragonzord is an awesome aesthetic collectors item. It very much looks show quality. I appreciated the fact there were no stickers to apply like the original one from the 90's. However, being that it's aesthetically pleasing it is not very interactive. Unlike the original dragonzord it does not have sound effects nor do the 5 red bulbs on the chest piece light up. Diecast parts were also very limited which is understandable because it would have driven up the overall cost as well as weight and made shipping more expensive. I will enjoy it but not as much as I would have had it been made to be fully interactive.

Comments about Bandai 1001202 Power Rangers Legacy Dragonzord:

I LOVE that its the die cast, includes 2 sets of hands (1 fingers strait, 1 fingers bent), the design detail, and BEST OF ALL: the tail! I would say the tail is the main selling point for this Dragonzord! Much longer and bendable than the original disappointing one. Looks great as weapon for combined mode too. Little disappointed the 5 red chest lights don't light up and its weird seeing the combiner head inside the mouth in dragon mode instead of it being tucked away in the roof of the mouth, but not to big a deal for me. The longer, flexible tail makes up for it. Must have for any original Power Ranger/ Green Ranger fan!

Comments about Bandai 1001202 Power Rangers Legacy Dragonzord:

I bought this toy and the rest of the legacy collection for my son for Christmas but the only problem was that I couldn't wait to give him this particular toy. My son loves the green ranger so of course instead of waiting for Santa to deliver it for him I gave it to him and the detail alone on this you is worth the money. Also the die cast metal they used to build this is amazing and so much better than the previous issue of this toy made primarily out of plastic. (I should know I played with these power rangers when I was a kid) this toy along with the rest of the legacy line are well worth the money and I wish they would have stocked more of these the action figures and the rest of the megazords to make it a lot easier on me to obtain. But as I said if you are thinking about getting this toy for your child or collection don't think twice, pull the trigger and get it I promise you'll be as happy with it as my son is with his.

This product is beautifully well crafted, both in structure and visual quality. Definitely a piece for a MMPR collector. If you want it as play toy, it will be just as great, given the child is old enough to know what to do and what not to do.
