I was surprised to see so many bad comments, so I had to write my own. The gate works very well, and it is certainly safe. The set-up was not difficult, it just takes time to do it right. It needs 3 screws on one side, and 4 on the other....and if you can use the bannister kit, that saves time, and the kit works great. We too had a baseboard, so we had get an extra block of wood to reach from the top lock down to the bottom lock (cut to the thickness of the baseboard (approx 1 inch) (I would not recommend only using the top lock as I saw from another post.) Anything with screws will force its way out, we have thick plaster and anchors were not needed, but we moved and 1
now we need the anchors (which are included). Opening and closing was always easy I thought...you can lengthen/shorten the bottom and top bolts to make it harder/easier to open. Most of it is metal with the exception of the keyhole top hinge which is plastic....that we broke very quickly, and we received a new one very quickly. It definitely needs to be opened the correct way..if you pull up too much the plastic keyhole will break. We asked for 2 more back-ups just before our 1-yr warranty run out (We've been using it for 2 1/2 years for our 3 boys). The boys have never figured out how to open it, they have never forced it open (and they tried!), they have never climbed over it, etc etc. Pressure gates are simpler to install, and some are easier to fit to size, but all in all this gate certainly ranks more that a 2 out of 5.

Having this gate has been the most frustrating experiences of my life. The installation was not difficult; however the operation of the gate is another story! This gate broke within 2 days of being installed. A piece broke off, so now when you try to open it (you have to pull up) the whole gate comes off the hinge. When it is closed, it is almost impossible to release it, and once you finally get it to release, it pinches your fingers. Also, it is really loud. It's he worst thing ever when you just got your baby to sleep and then you have to open or shut this gate and it wakes them up! To top it all of, the straps attaqching it to the banister slide down all the time, causing the gate to fall inward and become unstable which is a huge safety hazard for my son who is now mobile and curious.[...]

Comments about Summer Infant Extra Tall 'Quick Release' Gate with Bannister Kit:

I just spent over an HOUR trying to install this gate. The wall anchors do NOTHING to help hold the gate into drywall. Drywall cant support the weight of this gate and it all fell down because of the weight as I was installing the last pieces. ALSO, the opening needs to be bigger than 30 inches as advertised. My stairway opening is 34 inches and this gate barely fits. Directions are poorly written

Comments about Summer Infant Extra Tall 'Quick Release' Gate with Bannister Kit:

Complete waste of money. We tried to install this on top of our stairs and it broke during the process. I'm not actually the roughest person. The plastic ties broke and the sticky backs didn't hold. We didn't even get to the installation of the other half of the gate...that's how bad it is. Too bad because we were really hoping that this would be a good gate. Guess we need to keep looking.

Comments about Summer Infant Extra Tall 'Quick Release' Gate with Bannister Kit:

The gate itself is not the problem. It is made from Metal and is quite sturdy. But the fixtures that go with it are of poor quality. The two way sticky pads are not very good so the side of the gate stays attached to the bannister keeps moving. Not much but the weight of the gate moves it about 3-4 mm every week so you have to keep adjusting that every now and then.

I only saw the reviews because I was online to buy a second one. We have a 3 floor townhouse and have had this gate on our second floor for 6 months and it has worked great. It was not that hard to install and our very, very active 1 year old has not been able to damage it even though he has been able to pull down/damage other gates. The only con is that the plastic ties shift sometimes and you have to push the gate back in position. I am buying a second one of these for our third floor.

I only gave this one star, and that is only because I had to give it one to submit my review. We bought two of these gates and have had them installed for less than 6 months. The latch on one snapped off after only a couple of weeks worth of use. The other one worked well when it was first installed and within a month of use it won't latch properly. Don't waste your money. Buy something else.

This gate has worked fine for us. The only issue we have had is that the latch side will eventually come loose from the wall but a tighten job does just fine. Its gonna happen with anything thats screwed in. The side for the banister is great! The stickey parts havent moved and the straps are great! I dont think they will ever come off. I wanted something that didnt damage my wood. I do have baseboard so I do not have the bottom latch piece on due to that but it is still very study for my 18 month old and the constant in and out! Not my favorite looking since I wanted a wood look but it has done its part!

We bought this for my mom's house. She just put in a new railing for her stairs. I had a handy man install and it worked for less than an hour. It came loose, so we tightened it. That didn't work. We lowered the wall mounts and that didn't work. The sticky stuff came undone within a couple hours. We now just close it as far as we can and let it rest on the baseboard until we can find one that will work with bannisters. We have emailed the company complaining that it is a piece of junk. We waisted [$] on it and now have to find another one that will work correctly and not fall apart on us. We wish we would have read the reviews before buying this. Next time we will.

Comments about Summer Infant Extra Tall 'Quick Release' Gate with Bannister Kit:

We've had this for about a year and a half. In our first installation, it was mounted wall-to-wall, and worked well. A little difficult to open one handed. We moved, and it is now mounted bannister-to-wall. The bannister zip-ties are flimsy, and the brackets cannot be made secure without putting screws in the bannister. The bolts at the latch end are tearing the adjacent wall up when I remove the gate when it's not in use. Last night, the spindle closest to the wall broke off, so we now have a gap my son can get through - and my daughter is getting ready to crawl, so I've got to find a new gate!

When I looked closely at the spindles, it looks like they were only soldered on one side, leaving a gap on the other side you can slide a piece of paper through. I am very disappointed. I expected this gate would last through multiple children.
