We received this Thomas train set as a promotional deal from Fisher-Price. It comes un-assembled, which we don't mind because my son and my husband have fun putting it together and building the tracks. Once it's put together (it takes around 10 minutes) we let the Thomas train go through the loop over and over and it never had any problems with it falling off or not working correctly so we were really impressed at how well it was made and designed. Both my 3 year old son and my 8 year old daughter love this and play with it pretty much every day. Great gift idea for train lovers and Thomas lovers. Ours also came with the Thomas DVD 'Tale of the Brave'. My son watches it all the time.

Looks like so much fun, but what a headache! We usually thoroughly enjoy Fisher Price toys. They are built to last and their customer service can not be beat! This toy, however, certainly didn't meet up to our expectations at all.
It looks like so much fun for kids, and our little ones were so excited when it arrived for us to try out from Fisher Price.

They waited ever so patiently as it took us (and by us, I mean myself, my husband, and a neighbor of our's) literally 2.5 hours to construct. The instructions were poorly written and showed just an illustration of the track with parts that had odd labels (such as CL, EC2, ect). Some of the pieces we received weren't even labeled, leaving us to guess which way it should go. Talk about frustrating!! The pieces didn't even fit together properly...the plastic track was quite flimsy and easily unhooked as you tried to hook other pieces together.

When we finally got it all set up, I was actually quite impressed with the size of it. We had three small children ages (2, 3, and 5) all able to play with it together. After we set it up, I realized I made a mistake by doing it on the floor, as it didn't seem sturdy enough to be practically moved without disassembling and then re-assembling again. OY!
The children were quite excited to give Thomas a spin around the track! They were so eager to start him up at the top where the avalanche and "missing" track takes place. We set Thomas up at the top and had to give him a little push to get him going. What fun! The "bridge" or avalanche piece that takes him from one part to the next actually worked brilliantly. Thomas went along all on his own until the first curve and then jumped the track. My poor little boy was so frustrated by this. The track itself started to come undone as the three kids were trying to "fix" the issues with Thomas.
The box states this toy is good for ages 3-6, but honestly, I can't see how those ages could play easily without help with something so unsturdy. An adult would surely need to be nearby to help fix the tracks quite often, in my opinion.

With all that said and done, we packed Thomas away shortly after. We decided it was just too big of a headache for us all and that perhaps we would try again on another day. Until then, Thomas and his avalanche escape set sit in the box in the closet. I am certainly glad we received this product to try for free because from my understanding, it is quite pricey. I would have definitely been upset if I spent that kind of money on this for the quality of the toy.

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

This track is pretty easy to put together and it works really well! My son loves it. The problem is the new connectors, though they make the track much more smooth, they are harder to take apart for little hands. They do include 2 connectors to extend to your already owned Track Masters with the old connectors, but they needed to include at least 2 more connectors. The other problem we found is the only train that could climb was the one that came with the track, even with new batteries other trains were unable to make the steep climb. My son still loves it though.

I have taken apart and rebuilt a lot of Thomas sets of various scales without the instructions, but this one always gets me. We've had it for 5 months and my boys adore it, but I think it's massive and obnoxious. With the new track design and steep hills, hardly any of the older trackmaster engines function on this set. My preschoolers would recommend this. I would not.

Not so sure about this purchase

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

My wife and I bought this set for our 3 year old grandson who loves Thomas & Friends. While he enjoyed it the first couple of trips around the track, he and I both became disturbed as the train was getting stuck after traveling under the tipping track. My grandson became so upset that he doesn't play with it anymore. I wish the set really lived up to the "continuous play" as advertised.

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

For as much as this thing costs, I would expect a better set of directions on how to put the thing together! The set we got for our son had some of the support towers that wouldn't click in properly no matter what I tried. Other issues that I found are how flimsy the entire setup was. Thomas had an axle bend within the first 24 hours of being played with!! Overall my son loves this thing, and keeps it going CONSTANTLY. To the tune of having had to replace the batteries 7 times, since Christmas.

      Simple, inexpensive fix

      By Charles

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

We purchased the TrackMaster set for my son's birthday but it is really being played with by our 3 and 5 year old daughters. After putting it together, we were quickly disappointed with the tipping track advertised as "auto-reset enables continuous play." The tipping track would not reset on any surface in our home -- table, hardwood floors, carpeted floors... nada. A simple and inexpensive fix is to elevate the cave side of the mountain by applying two self-adhesive felt pads on the underside of the base, closest to the outer edge. Now the train set is a hit.

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

I really do not understand the negative comments this product has received. I purchased this item for my 7 year old who loves to create tracks from instructions or from his own perspective. Considering my son built this himself I have no idea how ADULTS are saying it was hard to build. I think he has only had one incident where the train has fallen of the track, but as someone else stated it is not a problem as he can just simply put it back on track and continue. If your child is crying because of this then I would suggest they're to young or too impatient for this kind of track and would recommend that you purchase a simpler track. Overall I am very pleased with this purchase as it has kept my son entertained for hours at a time, and it helps to develop his motor/building skills whilst enjoying himself.

Sure way to make a child cry

        By FX2FILM

        from Simi Valley, CA

Comments about Fisher-Price 1001124 Fisher-Price Thomas & Friends: Trackmaster Avalanche Escape Set:

I would not recommend this toy to anyone (unless you want to punish a child). This was our daughters request from Santa and she was so happy and said "I knew Santa would bring me my train" ... but it does not work and she keeps asking why it's broken and if I can fix it - arrrrggg, I can not fix this and it's so heart breaking (and I'm very handy). We are at the point of telling her to ask her "elf on the shelf" if he can ask Santa to bring a different train that works ... so far she just keeps asking me to fix this one - so the concept is good, however it doesn't work 90% of the time. Main problem - as Thomas attempts to climb the mountain his front wheels skip off the track causing him to slide back to the bottom and he keeps doing this until he slides down and simply falls off the bottom. When he does climb without slipping off the tracks it's very cool to watch as he gets lifted to the other track and travels down the hill - however, 20% of the time his car skips off the track during the descent causing him to drag the car to again malfunction. We took great care in making sure all parts were assembled properly, snapped tightly, and supports were where they should be - by the way, assembly instructions are not clear and you are mostly guessing as to where the supports should be placed (some "place support here" color coding or imprints into the plastic would be good). And yes, the track was sitting on a hard flat surface. It appears that the sides of the tracks leading Thomas up the hill must be a little higher to keep his wheels on the tracks. We also watched his nose literally lift off the tracks during the climb so maybe a little more weight in the front may help (we tried taping two pennies to his nose, and that helped a little but not much). Summary - a good idea that is very poorly designed. Too bad - just a little more effort would have made this a very cool toy - as it is, it's a heart breaking toy that will make your child sad.
