From its earliest beginnings, Crayola has been a color company. Crayola came into being when cousins Edwin Binney and C. Harold Smith took over Edwin's father's pigment business in 1885. More than 120 years later, color - along with creativity, learning and most of all, fun - is the hallmark of Crayola's company. Crayola has called Easton, Pennsylvania its home since the early 1900s. Today, the Crayola's world headquarters and major manufacturing facilities are located there. And downtown Easton is the home of The Crayola FACTORY, a one-of-a-kind celebration of creative fun for everyone. In 1984, Crayola became a wholly-owned subsidiary of Hallmark Cards and has since Crayola has played the lead role in Hallmark's personal development strategies.

I recommend this product for kids who love art and also have a science project mentality.

We have used the crayon maker at our house for almost a year. My children play with it regularly, and it's still a big hit today. I have a son, 7, and a daughter, 9. They love picking out crayons to mix together to invent new swirly colors, and they really enjoy watching the progress of the melted crayons waterfalling into the molds. They have built up quite a collection of crazy colored crayons over time.

In my experience, the crayons take almost 45 min to melt, and almost that long again to harden and be absolutely ready. That's a long time to sit around and wait, so at least at our house, we use this crayon maker as a "background" activity that we weave into other playtime activities/chores/homework and come back to a couple or three times over the course of a few hours, to harvest the new crayons, prepare a new batch, and color for a while. My children usually complete 2 batches on average with this product each time we get it out to play with it. That is a total of 8 crayons each time. They seem to be just as interested in picking out which crayons to mix, loading them, and watching the melting progress as they are in using the newly created crayons. They crayon maker only makes 4 crayons per batch. If you have a child who would primarily be interested in the newly created crayons, they might be let down by the 4 mini-crayon yield.

It's a rather small sized product, so it fits very well in between my two kids seated at our breakfast bar with papers out ready to color with the new crayons.

I have used Crayola as well as Rose Art brand crayons with equal success. We have experienced no problems with the quality of crayons it makes, but we definitely wait about 40-45 minutes melt and then 40 min harden for each batch, much longer then recommended. The created crayons are mini-sized crayons, but my kids don't seem to mind. There is even an overflow part of the tray assembly, and my daughter pops those out as well, and it makes a teeny brick-shaped crayon with two points on it. They use everything that comes out of the mold.

I honestly have never even cleaned it out one time(!) so in my personal case, there is no mess, lol. The leftover colors melt in the subsequent batch and become part of the next crayon creation I guess. I also do not closely supervise their using this product. My 9 year old requires zero intervention to use the crayon maker, and she helps her brother out. She sets it up on the counter and plugs in it herself and puts it away herself. I don't think my 7 year old would be as capable and motivated to do it by himself at his age.

Mechanically speaking, it's worked fine for us for almost a year now. We have not replaced the bulb.

I think the age recommendation of 8-10 years old is pretty much on target.

I got this for my daughter last year for Christmas shes 7 now and it's a great product but it's a pain for adults. 1.) It takes around and hour or more to make 2 crayons so kids get inpatient waiting for the crayons to melt and harden so they can use them. 2.) By the time there hardened and out of the molds he kids are ready to start over again. 3.) So when it comes to adult time the cleaning process is such a pain you have to clean up the wax around the melter and then you have to clean out the molds which is some what easy but the melters are so hard to clean I've tried hot soap water the plastic knife a chop stick a sponge scrubber and napkins and I've tried it wet wax and hard wax and it's not easy to clean and get out of corners it takes forever and never fully comes cleans which means it stays in for the next round of crayon making. Making kids not so happy about the extra color and the time to make and clean it. It will definitely make kids learn patience. Over all it is a cool product if you're willing to clean hard and long and you have calm kids and friends. It would be cool if they had interchangeable molds and melters so the kids can start as soon as the process is over and the parents can start cleaning I would purchase those in a heart beat. My kids love it and always want to make crayons its me whose like huh maybe next week. It would also be cool if the lid didn't lock forever so u can hurry up and pull the melters out and maybe that would help while the wax is still melted as it seats their lid locked for 10 extra min the wax hardens to the melters. So buyer beware on this and have patience and hard cleaning skills. Over all again my kids love it and that makes me happy and we no longer have broken crayon bits around the house and the lid locking is great while its melted safety is #1 and it passes with flying colors as long as adults are supervising cause it does get very hot to the touch and if tipped over wax can spill out of vent holes and burn never happed to me yet but it could if parents arnt there with the child at all times.

Comments about Crayola 1005900 Crayola Crayon Maker with Story Studio:

The first few times we tried this thing the bulb would not light up. Of course we tried switching to another bulb, tightening/loosening the bulb, etc. Really frustrating that we had to wait 25 minutes between each attempt because the @#$%! thing goes into "lock" mode to prevent burns even though it had never heated up. But just when I was about to throw it out the window I noticed that the metal strip at the bottom of the socket was pressed too flat to make good contact with the light bulb. So I took a long, thin paring knife and gently pulled it up a bit. After that the bulb lit up with no more problems! The crayons themselves are OK--you've got to pour them SLOWLY into the molds to maintain the swirls--otherwise you get the blurred, brown results that others have described. Daughter liked it, eventually, and it really is a good way to re-use old crayons. And it is fun watching the crayons melt. Overall I'd give it a C+ or maybe a B-.

Got this as a gift for Christmas 2011 and one year later it is still a huge disappointment. After several trips to find the correct bulb, it has never once made a batch of crayons. I was shocked that they were selling this product still.
It never warmed up, never melted one crayon, stayed locked in cool down mode despite never actually heating up. I would NOT recommend this product at all and I have loved most of my other crayola products.

My 4 year old son wanted this so bad. We got it for him for Christmas last year. We've had many, many crayons made since then.
Does not come with Light Bulb, so prepare for that.
Hard to clean, esp. after using a few times. However, cleaning is a necessity if you don't want brown crayons.
Used 2 and 3 different colors. Sometimes the swirls came out perfect, sometimes they didn't. But, even if it didn't look cool from the outside, they were always fun to color with.
The crayons are small but the box includes a holder to color easier.
        Overall, this family is pleased.

We love being able to use old & broken crayons again and again... I got this in 2011 for a Christmas gift to my 4 & 7 year old sons. They love it. Ours works well and seem to be exactly as the directions had said.
You have to make sure you follow the instructions and have a strong enough wattage of bulb.
This year I plan to give one as a gift to 2 other boys I know...

Wow! This thing is great. I made one batch of crayons so far, and they didn't turn brown. I did the whole process 2 more times, and worked just fine. I do think it should add a little more Crayon colors, and less of the same Color. The green and the blue look too much alike. It was so easy, I did it.

You are better off buying a silicone mold and melting the crayons in the oven.

The colors all mix and turn brown (i even tried to only do two colors) Plus the wax doesn't melt properly. The final product is half the size of a normal crayon.

When the crayons finally melt and are ready to be poured into the molds only two would fill leaching the others hollow. The swrls would not be good they just turn brown. It doesn't come with a light bulb so my daughter was so excyted but it ended up with a fit when we had to wait till tomarow to get the lightbulb. I wouldn't recommend spending the money on this when the milcerwave andsome old crayons trun out a lot better. DON'T BUY!!!!,
