I put the LEGO Mini Cooper together in about two hours and loved every minute of the build. I like the colour, the detail and the novel building techniques used here. I will admit that it's hard for me to come up with any dislikes for this set. And I only include these because they jumped out at me as I was building. Keep in mind, these are minuscule complaints and the model must be really spectacular if these are the only faults I can find. 1. The scale. Another reviewer mentioned that the scale of the MINI is a bit different than than the recent VW Camper van. I agree that it would have been nice if both were in the same scale. 2. The stickers. To make the angle of the front windshield and back windshield work, the designers employed four 'black out' stickers. These are a bit of a cheat. 3. The steering wheel. It's built so that it adjusts forward and back with tilt. But then, when the dash is install, the dash smashes the steering wheel down into the seat. I know the scale of the model isn't such that a mini figure (or even a LEGO Friends figure would logically fit inside, but the wheel look silly resting so close to the front of the seat. 4. On my model, the printed dark green 1x4 bolster pieces were a fun surprise. Unfortunately, mine had pin stripes that were printed on an angle and ruin the effect of a car-length racing stripe. I took them all apart and fussed with them until I got them in an order that mostly made them line up. But still. Now for the pros. 1. Love the colour. The white plus dark green plus the choice of the interior checkered pattern is smashing. Even love the tinted glass panels -- those made the whole model pop. 2. Details like the skates for the door handles, the rear tailpipe, the curved lid of the boot (trunk) and the curved side mirrors make this one an exceptional capture of the real vehicle. 3. Love the insets for the wheels, the metallic bumpers (front and back). 4. All the opening and moving features. We take for granted the rolling wheels but I love these soft rubber ones. Also, the opening trunk, hood, realistic engine (with metallic pieces inside), two opening doors and removable roof. 5. The dash with all the gadgets, wood paneling and instrument gauges. Shifter knob and emergency brake. Might have liked the roof to be made with larger white tiles. 6. The clever picnic basket, contents, wine bottle and blanket. When I showed my wife, it reminded her of one of our earliest dates. I had forgotten that moment until she reminded me (Shhh! Don't tell her!) and was instantly transported back to that night when we had a picnic with wine on the banks of a beautiful lake. Great build! Great memories. And when my kids get older, they can enjoy building this one too!

This is a nice model to build and looks ok once complete I feel that it needed a little bit of a polish up though the steering wheel and gear lever both to big, there no sun visors rear view mirror or wipers but seems there was meant to be, the bonnet sits proud and roof not finished off on the corners, the mini badges should not be stickers, spear wheel dose not match the other 4 wheels and last of all it has a black exhaust not silver. I know it seems a lot and bit picky but this is an expert model and has a steep price to go with it I felt that it was easy to build and did not take to long. Over all this is not much harder than most of the standard Lego creator sets that iv built.

My first proper build in years!

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

As the title suggests, this is my first LEGO build in many many years and it was a brilliant set to start with. Great attention to detail and looks fantastic on display. Looking at the Ferrari F40 and Camper Van sets as my next builds. Hope to see more vehicle sets to add to these 3, as they look fantastic and great fun to build

A beloved icon immortalised in LEGO

By Brickorax

from Thatcham

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

First of all, I'll admit that I'm by no means a car expert, however, I think that LEGO has captured the essence of the mini cooper very well; it's superbly sculpted with the smooth curves, the patterned seats, the grill and the lights and all the extra details, for example- the picnic basket, the gearshift, the engine and the spare tyre compartment are also great. I also think the stickers are worth mentioning as despite they're a pain to put on they do contribute a lot to the realism and authenticity of the model. Finally, the colour choices LEGO have made are excellent; the classic British racing green for this model looks awesome, the tan interior complements the outside very well and the silver metallic pieces were also a great decision in terms of the aesthetics. The build was very enjoyable and some of the part uses are ingenious: the minifigure ice skates used to make the door handles and the shields used to make the lights were the best. Nevertheless, this set does have some minor flaws. For example, I appreciate the fact the mini steering wheel was big but I don't know if it's quite to scale- it touches the seat in it's resting position so how could someone sit down and actually steer this thing? Another aspect of the mini cooper I found slightly puzzling was the fact this model is built at a larger scale than the VW T1 campervan...even though it's quite empty inside. The T1 campervan interior is packed with cool details, but then again, I suppose this is a different kind of vehicle and model. Furthermore, the mini has limited playability as it's quite difficult to drive and it's not really suitable for minifigures -this is a display model. Finally, there are a lot of stickers in this model so you have to be really careful when putting them on-they're fairly important in adding to the mini cooper's authenticity and they're in quite conspicuous places so if you want your model to be perfect then make sure the stickers are applied correctly. To round things off, I definitely recommend this awesome model but primarily to slightly older and more experienced builders who will probably enjoy the build more and appreciate the model.

Overall this was a very enjoyable build. Nothing overly difficult or fiddly about it except maybe the engine. Perfect for a night in when the kids are asleep.

Fabulous Kit - One of my all time favourites

By Morgrp

from Bristol

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

Being a huge fan the original Mini I was delighted to find this kit when it was released. Without nit-picking on details that only a true Mini geek like myself would notice, it is faithfully recreated from the spare wheel under the boot floor to the lovely little a-series engine under the bonnet. The interior is particularly lovely and the seat upholstery eye catching. The Picnic basket is a great addition to the kit and suits the "Britishness" of the car perfectly! It's worth mentioning the price of the kit. From Lego, it is fantastic value and you get a huge amount of bricks for your money. If you want it to play with or like mine, take pride of place on your bookcase in the lounge, this mini set is up to the job! Easily one of my favourite kits of all time.

Love this series

By RikVicious

from Detroit

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

My partner and I both are big Lego fans, and usually try building at least one thing while we're visiting another. We got the Mini Cooper because we've both been desperate to build it, and had such an incredible time building it. The attention to detail is insane, and was well worth the money. This series (Mini Cooper, VW Bus, etc.) is probably my favorite with Lego right now.

Best treat

By Vic2316

from Undisclosed

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

Bought this as a treat for myself, couldn't decide between this and the VW Campervan but in the end this won me over. I wanted something more challenging and this was fantastic,I started building this late at night and would have happily stayed up and built it in one go but wasn't able to. The small picnic set is adorable , the seats are amazing and the brick separator included in the kit saved my nails! I get bored easily with other smaller kits and they usually passed on to younger family members but this will be staying firmly on my shelf!

Fun to Build

By CocoaPuff

from Calgaru

Comments about LEGO Creator Ex Mini Cooper Building Set (10242):

This set is way easier than I thought. the Lego guy in the store told me it took his mom 7 hours to build and I got scared. I hesitated because I didn't want to spend 7 hours to build a set which only has 1077 pieces. Once I started it went very smooth. It could be even faster if I didn't take a coffee break or play with my dog. I like Mini Coopers, I own 2, I drive 1, now even have a mini Mini in my living room. Cutest thing ever!
