Beginner Building

By FamilyBanker

Comments about LEGO Technic REM-Controlled Volvo L350F (42030):

After years of watching my wife and Grandkids build Lego's, I finally broke down and bought the Volvo Front End Loader for myself because it looked like the most fun. My hand are too big to work around the fragile brick kits, but the connector system of the Technic system was sturdy and well thought out. It was fun to see the thought and planning that went into the Volvo. I created some opportunities to deconstruct and reconstruct the vehicle, just so I could have the experience. I also had the problem when using Duracell Batteries the remotes didn't work, but a call to Customer Service put me back on the right path. I am now hooked on working with Lego's and can't wait to get the next ones.

Everything is great. The main motor is acting bad. When going forward, the motor bucks and does not go in reverse at all.

My 9 year old grandson put this together all by himself even though it is marked for much order children. It helps teach him to follow step by step instructions and reading comprehension. Plus he was so very proud of himself.

Great Build! The Articulated Hauler Is Awesome!

Comments about LEGO Technic REM-Controlled Volvo L350F (42030):

The A25F articulated hauler model is awesome! Everyone talks about the Wheel Loader but the articulated hauler is totally worth building. For me the play value was higher since it matches the other cars and trucks in my collection. The online only instructions were easy to follow and very descriptive. Would highly recommend this toy to anyone. Be different and build the truck! You won't regret it.

            Lego Volvo L350F-Fantastic Build

            By ACJLego360

            from MILPITAS

Comments about LEGO Technic REM-Controlled Volvo L350F (42030):

The Volvo L350F is expensive, but worth the price. I don't keep track of how long it took to build, a few hours here and there, then eventually it is done, The instructions are well laid out for the build. The only real negative is the remote. Duracell AAA batteries would not work. I looked up trouble-shooting on the internet and found some things out.. either a tolerance issue with the dementions of the battery or a voltage issue Whatever the case, the remote should be compatible with the Duracell battery.. Apart from the remote issue, it's great.

            Excellent, but not quite perfect

            By Kinibo

            from Grande Prairie

Comments about LEGO Technic REM-Controlled Volvo L350F (42030):

This was an overall excellent experience, and the finished build is definitely impressive. It looks great, it operates great, and the detail is really satisfying. I really loved this set. However, there is a proviso attached to this positive review, and it's a pretty big one which I'll get to further down. A couple of notes for those of you about to embark upon this journey. Firstly, don't lose any pieces. Once complete, pretty much everything that comes in the box has been used and, as with most Lego models, there are no spare pieces to replace what the family cat might have batted away when you left the room, or that the vacuum cleaner might have consumed during the weekly housecleaning duties. Secondly, pay extremely close attention to the instructions. This set in particular has a number of pieces that differ in very, very small ways, and if you grab the wrong one during a momentary lapse of concentration, you could be in trouble. About 10 hours into the build, I discovered such a mistake and ended up having to dismantle the entire model and start over again. I have a habit of doing this, and usually it's a salvageable situation. But not this time; the components on the Volvo L350F are so intricately interdependent, you probably won't have the option of correcting a mistake while keeping the overall build intact. This is not a complaint, just a warning. In fact, the beauty of this model is precisely how interrelated everything is. Like a good piece of music, if one part is wrong or missing, the entire structure falls as a result. Once complete, the real fun of this lies in the remote control features. There are so many moving parts, from the bucket loader to the drive functions to the moving pistons to the spinning engine fan. Even the wife had to take it for a spin around the living room. It really is a joy to complete this project and then set it on the floor to watch it at work. Very impressive. Unfortunately, there is an apparent design flaw. The last part of the build involves assembling the remote control, which consists of two controllers, connected together, each requiring three AA batteries. It seems that for some people, the remotes will not function without a slight modification, which is exactly the issue that I ran in to. I assembled the remote, set the Volvo L350F on the floor, and started pushing and pulling levers, while the model just sat there unresponsive. After double checking my connections, and ensuring the engine light was switched on and the green light was glowing, I ended up having to go online in search of a clue as to the possible issue. After a few moments I discovered that in some cases, the nub on the positive end of the battery does not quite touch the contact plate in the battery compartment (some commenters mentioned this is particularly a problem with Duracell batteries, which is what I was using). The suggested solution: fold a tiny piece of tinfoil and place it between the battery nub and the contact plate to fill the gap and complete the connection. I tried this, and it worked, and now the remote functions as it should. So while it all ended well, this was a slightly disappointing feature, and certainly a surprising shortcoming given the reputation for quality that is a hallmark of the Lego brand. Had I not been Google savvy, I'd be sitting here typing this next to a nice looking model that didn't work. I highly recommend the Volvo L350F, despite the issue described. It was fun from start to finish, and is a great addition to my collection. Aside from the 30 minute delay between build completion and correcting the issue with the remote, I loved every minute of it.
