Those little door handle covers are good up until your child is a year old, but beyond that they don't work. My 3 year old will usually stay out of rooms when told to, but my 1 1/2 year old will NOT. We didn't know what to do until we came to BRU's website to find a solution. My husband went to the store right away and came back with one of these. Well, the instruction are easy, it is easy to install, but it didn't work with the way our trim is sloped and decorative. The "latch" couldn't catch and so it would just slide right by. I was so bummed! Then my husband had the idea to fix it by nailing in an extra piece of wood with a 90 degree cut, and problems solved. The pinch guard still works perfectly and everything. Neither of our kids can get in the room now, and our sanity has been restored! Whoever invented this is a lifesaver. We are going to go back soon and get another one for a different door.

The product works as designed, but there was no mention about checking the door jamb. The key thing is to make sure you check to make sure that both sides of the jamb where the locking mechanism latches on to is square. After getting everything out of the box and mounting it, we noticed that it was not working. It turned out that one side of our door jamb is mitered with a curved edge that would not allow the locking mechanism to engage. To make it work we utilized the catches that are used for the drawer locks and mounted that to the door jamb to get the square edge that is needed.

My 3 year old son is transitioning to his own bedroom so I thought this would be great for not smashing little fingers. WRONG! The door still closes almost all the way & it locks him in his room.

This product was a waste of time and money. I've already returned it to Babies R Us. I installed it as instructed and when I tested it to see if it works, I could open the door with ease as if it wasn't even attached to the door. Absolutely did not stop the door from opening.

Comments about Safety 1st Prograde Top of Door Lock:

These door locks are awesome. Even my husband asked why we hadn't bought them sooner. Absolute lifesaver since my son has figured out the lever door handles. I did lots of research and these were the only locks which didn't require screwing or glueing to the door. This was really important as we are in temporary housing right now. They are a bit pricy considering but totally worth it for the peace of mind that my 15 month old can no longer get into the bathroom.

Directions aren't super clear but once I figured out that the spacer had fallen off, they were a breeze to install and fit our doors perfectly. Only problem I had was if the door is not plum it doesn't work.

Comments about Safety 1st Prograde Top of Door Lock:

I bought this item for two reasons: 1) to prevent my toddler from falling down the steps from the kitchen into the basement and 2) to allow my cat to come upstairs from the basement as my husband always "forgets" to leave that door open for her. It serves both purposes great. My cat does, however, have a small measure of difficulty getting thru the opening but she manages.
