Product Description

CHOKING HAZARD - Small parts. Not for children under 3 yrs.

LEGO Architecture Empire State Building. Completed in 1931 during the height of the Great Depression, the Empire State Building was the world's tallest building in the world until 1972 when the World Trade Center opened. Voted one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Empire Stat Building is an Art Deco skyscraper and is considered the symbol of American skyscrapers. This golden LEGO model, co-developed and designed by Adam Reed Tucker, celebrates the early age of skyscraper design.

To be able to understand why LEGO has been successful for so long, just look to the name. LEGO originally got its name from founder Ole Kirk Christiansen who combed the Danish words "Leg Got" which means "play well". He later realized that LEGO in Latin translates to "I put together." The LEGO set became a standard of creative play for children worldwide, unlocking the creativity to build vehicles, buildings, cities and more. Historians point to the invention of the wheel as a major turning point in world history. The invention of the LEGO wheel had the same monumental effect in the history of LEGO, making it possible to create cars, trucks and eventually the LEGO train building set that is one of the most successful LEGO sets of all time. LEGO currently produces about 20 billion LEGO bricks a year and has sold over 400 billion LEGOs in their history -- enough for every person on the planet to have over 60 LEGOs each!

I purchased this set at the LEGO store in Kansas City. I have had my eye on this set for quite some time, and finally got the opportunity to purchase it. I happily traveled back to the hotel with it in hand, anticipating the stimulating build ahead of me. I opened the box, and remarked, " The packaging is really nice..." which it was. I built the set, and stood back and looked at the rather small building. I liked it. And then I remembered the 20 dollars I had spent on it. And I was rather dissatisfied. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love this set, and recommend buying it.. But for $20.00, it is rather lacking in stature with it's mere 77 pieces. If I were to order the same pieces off of pick-a-brick, it would most likely cost me around $10, not including shipping. The building can be partially disassembled into three chunks that fit into the really nice box, great for transport or storage, although I don't know why you'd need to do the former. The packaging is overdone, and I think this adds in to the price. You would almost think you were unboxing a piece of electronics. I did enjoy that LEGO included with the instructions list of facts about the empire state building. Who knew that the observation deck was intended to moor airships? As for the construction of the building, it is very solid until the last 1x2 brick at the top, which tends to become crooked and/or fall off. Overall, I love this set and am glad I purchased it. It makes a great introduction to the Architecture theme, and while it was not in the least challenging to build, it was very relaxing and almost therapeutic.

The set is easy to build and not too difficult for younger ages (i.e., 6-10) like some Lego Architecture sets can be (Falling Water and the White House). And the price is easier to handle. However, after finishing, there are dimensions of the building just missing. Some lines are missing (the model is simpler than the building itself), probably to make the set more simplistic and thus cheaper to purchase. But it is a letdown to get such a difference between the building and the model. If looking for a set, would pay a little more and get the White House or Guggenheim models (but which are not the best sets for young builders).

The Empire State Building, looks good!

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

With my Lego Architecture range getting bigger, I am determined to own them all! I am a mad fan of Architecture and to me, this is a great hobby. The Empire State Building is my 8th model I have constructed and although it was probably the shortest build time, the building looks very much in tune with the real thing. Not a particularly large model or many bricks for the price but hey, this is Lego and it comes in a great box with a fantastic booklet containing the facts of the building and the build instructions. Love it!

I have a growing collection of LEGO Architecture series models, they are really handsome, well-engineered replicas of the real thing. They would look great on any collector's shelf!

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

Thought it might be more challenging .
My tween daughter saw this and had never seen one in the store.
We bought it for her older brother who built it in 4 mins.
It is a great design and obviously a great landmark but it was not challenging to build.
We did notice 2 different kinds & the other looked like it had bigger bricks that we have never used.....
The other version may have been more challenging- unsure.
Or it might just be updated packaging.

A good started set for those contemplating starting an architecture series collection. While lacking detail, it is very representative of the unique building profile.

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

My son loved this set. He thought the idea of it being an actual real building that he could build himself was cool. I also enjoyed seeing him build something that looked real instead of all the little play sets he has built on the past. I do however believe that all Lego sets are seriously over priced for plastic pieces that don't always stay together for long which ends up with a frustrated child.

My 6 year old put this together in about 10 minutes. But he loves the lego architectural series. He cant get enough of them big and small. As a mom I am all for it since we read the booklets about the buildings together, he learns about the location of the building, the architect and the design behind it. Lots of great info.

        Christmas gift, bit small.

        By luigisonic04

        from Undisclosed

Comments about Lego 1001617 LEGO Architecture Empire State Building (21002):

This model is one of the smallest in the whole series. When I first saw that lego was launching this models I was crying of JOY (Who cares). The first glance at this is small and simple (and it is). Although it is small, it is the empire state building, a symbol of power and an engineering marvel of the 20 century. If you have gone to the actual building you can say, it looks allot alike. This makes a piece for your desk but after you start buying more sets, it starts to look lame. I think if you are a starter on lego architecture this will be a great piece. Sadly, not much detail is shown. I give it a 4/5. A bit overpriced (mainly because of the name).
